Chapter Four: Fever Dreams
Alfred was floating in a black abyss, his world was completely silent. He looked around the scene that consumed him, scared and confused as to why he was there. He would turn in every direction only to see the same thing: black nothingness. He realized he didn't have any type of footing below him, so he shifted himself around. He began to levitate around, smiling a bit. He liked the freeing sensations that floating around gave him. He laughed as he did flips and barrel rolls. Though, after a while, he became bored. He wanted to do something other than just play in this world with no gravity.
He kept floating around as he tried to find something that could make use of any of his senses. There was literally nothing: no smells, no sounds, no sights, not even anything to touch. This world was just empty.
His head seemed to spin as he soon found himself smelling the coppery scent of blood. Alfred's heart began to pace as the smell got stronger and a ball of white light formed ahead of him. Alfred was desperate to see something other than darkness, so he quickly levitated over and let the light consume him. The light became too much for Alfred's sensitive eyes, so he sealed them tightly shut and waited for the light to die down. The scent of blood was still prominent in the air, making Alfred begin to sweat. The light did eventually stop and Alfred felt it was safe to open his eyes. Oh, how wrong he was to do so.
The scene was awful! He witnessed fighting between the nations, his family against his enemies. Alfred looked for himself in the dream and found him swollen, most likely to full term. He saw how both Ukraine and France had protective arms around him, as Latvia stood in front of the group with a blade.
He saw Germany, Prussia, and Iceland had machine guns.
He saw Denmark and Spain with their large battle-axes.
He saw England and Japan with swords.
He saw Estonia with a baseball bat, Hungary with her frying pan, and Canada with a hockey stick.
He saw Lithuania, Belarus, and Romano with knives.
He saw Italy, Finland, and Sweden with snipers.
He saw China with his wok.
He saw Norway's hands glowing.
Lastly, he saw Russia, his Russia, with his pipe.
All of them stood guard in front of America, the rivaling nations growling. Alfred couldn't tell which nations they were, they simply looked like black shadows with devious smiles and red eyes. He assumed they were nations because it looked like a world summit might have been taking place: papers were thrown everywhere, files had been scattered, pens and laptops were broken on the table, and there was writing on the whiteboard that America couldn't make out.
"I won't let you hurt him!" Alfred shot his head to Latvia, who had yelled the bold statement.
"None of us vill!" Germany added, aiming the gun.
"Jou will 'ave to pry Amerique from my cold dead 'ands!" France hugged him closer. The voices echoed around America as if the scene wanted him to hear what he was going to cause. Alfred began to tremble and shook his head, covering his ears.
"STOP!!!" Alfred screamed at the dream, but his mind didn't care. Alfred watched tear-filled as the black shadows laughed and attacked the other nations. The dream Alfred faded and was replaced by him, a ball of fear huddled on the ground.
IN THE WAKING WORLD
Ivan woke up at four in the morning, feeling uncomfortable. His eyes slowly peeled open but widened as soon as he saw Alfred in bed. His cheeks were bright red, his breathing was heavy, sweat was pooling from his face, and tears were trickling down his cheeks. His fingers and body were also twitching, the sudden jerks making it look more like a seizure. Alfred whined in pain, his face scrunching up with every motion. Alfred wasn't just having a nightmare; he was having a panic attack while he was having a nightmare, all while he was running a clearly high fever. Ivan shot out of bed, quick as lightning, and got the first aid kit from their private on-suite bathroom. He opened it impatiently and turned on the nightstand lamp for a little light. He took the thermometer from the kit, it fumbling in his hands a little bit, and quickly took Alfred's temperature: 105.8 Fahrenheit or 41 Celcius.
His PREGNANT husband basically had a 106 fever. That high fever could be lethal for him and his unborn child. Ivan panicked and ran out of the room, dashing right to Finland's door. He banged on it so loud that it woke all the other nations up, but he couldn't control his large, quaking fist. Sweden opened the door quickly and looked to see Ivan's frightened face.
"Wh'ts wr'ng?" he slurred, still waking up. By then all the other nations came to find Ivan with the same panic in his eyes. It was kind of off-putting, the others weren't used to seeing Russia scared.
"Fredka is running a fever! A 40 Celsius fever! He won't wake up and I know he's in pain!" Ivan shouted. The fear lacing his voice was so surreal, it was like he was having a panic attack himself. Sweden immediately woke up and was about to leave when he was knocked back by an even scarier Fin. Tino bolted down the hallway, as did Yao, Gilbert, and Matthew. When the ancient, brother, best friend, and mother saw Alfred on the bed they knew why Ivan was panicking so badly. Alfred's entire face was red and his pillow was soaked with salty tears and cold sweat. His breathing became erratic and his twitching had worsened. They knew he was in pain.
"Get me a cold bowl of water, aru! A clean rag too! I also need another blanket and an ice pack!" China ordered. Germany, Ukraine, and Japan bolted to get the said items. China then knelt right beside Alfred and brushed the hair that was stuck to his face, "Aiya, I can feel the heat coming off him...Tell them to hurry up!" Not even a second later the nations came in with the supplies, "put the blanket on him, he can sweat out the fever better with more body heat! Put the rag next to me with the bowl! The ice pack goes under the pillow!" the nations followed every command that flew from China's mouth.
BACK TO THE DREAM
Alfred saw the entire battle go down. All of his allies defended him valiantly. They fought with power, determination, and love. His family lasted a while, but they soon began to fall one by one...
One of the demons had snuck behind Japan while he was slaying another demon, stabbing him right through the chest and blood spurting everywhere. He screeched in agony as he fell to his knees and went limp on his side. His once already blank eyes were now lifeless orbs.
"Kiku!" Italy screamed, running to his side. As soon as he turned Kiku onto his back, a bullet rang loudly and implanted itself in Feli's brain. The bubbly Italian fell on top of his ally, dead. Germany felt anger boil over and began to fight with his bare hands, instead of his weapon. He was quickly defeated when one of the demons knocked out his kneecaps and shattered his skull.
"N-no...please...make it stop...MAKE IT STOP!!!" Alfred begged as he saw Denmark's ax fly into his skull. Alfred crumpled to the ground and curled in on himself, covering his ears, "PLEASE!!!" he begged. But the nightmare continued for poor Alfred. The bloodshed was so violent, the bodies of his family were cold and limp, and terrified and pained yells echoed all throughout his head.
WAKING WORLD!!!
All the nations were around the master bedroom, most were trying to console others. China, Japan, Canada, and France were all by Alfred's side, trying to get his fever down. Nothing was working and panic was beginning to fill the air.
"What the bloody hell is wrong with him?!" England screamed into his hands as he cried. Spain was embracing him and Romano, trying to bring some sort of comfort.
"Arthur, it will be ok... Things will be ok... We just need to have a little faith that Alfred is strong enough to conquer this..." Spain explained as he began to rock the two nations. He had never seen Lovino cry so much, it saddened him greatly.
"N-no..." Alfred whispered. Every pair of eyes was on him, "st-stop...p-please stop..." Alfred's faces scrunched up and his arm jerked violently. Norway was at his side with his hand glowing.
"I'm not going to sit here anymore! I can't stand seeing him like this! I'm going into his dream and pulling him out!" Norway put his hand on his forehead and the other on Alfred's, and in a flash, Norway disappeared. The other nations waited for the Nordic's safe return.
BACK IN THE DREAM
The scene Lukas came upon with sickening. The floor was nothing but red, blood was everywhere. The bodies of all of Alfred's allies were scattered everywhere, completely lifeless and some were even mangled in inhuman positions. Lukas looked around and saw the black shadows circling Alfred now, laughing at the trembling blonde as he cried. That is what broke the normally stoic Norway, that is what made him snap. Anger boiled in his veins as he saw his sweet, happy nephew reduced to shaking and fright. Without a moment's hesitation, he ran in front of Alfred and put a forcefield around the two of them. He then turned around and knelt right in front of Alfred, trying to get a solid look on his face.
"Alfred, it's me. It's Lukas. I'm here. I won't let them hurt you now," Lukas gently took Alfred's hands and gently rubbed his knuckles, "take a deep breath, Alfie. In, hold for five seconds. Out, stretch it out for six seconds. Rest. In, hold for five seconds. Out, stretch it out for six seconds. Rest," Norway gently got Alfred to breathe normally. When Alfred looked up from his knees, his eyes were red from all his tears.
"I'm sorry... I didn't mean to cause trouble again... I feel like I'm pestering everyone now... Now that everybody is starting to like me, I'm scared... What if I hurt someone else... You guys are used to seeing this, at least in some way... Nobody else does... Nobody sees this me... What if when they see this they revert back to being mean?!" Alfred cried as Lukas hugged him. He rested Alfred's head into the bridge of his neck, allowing America to soak his nightshirt with the salty tears.
"You wanna know something Alfred? Right now, in the waking world, England is crying into Spain's shoulder. Spain's shoulder. France is nearly having a panic attack because you keep jerking around and you have a very high fever. Germany is trying to not cry, but if you look close enough there is a moistness to his eyes. He wants to cry Alfred because he is scared right now. He is scared that you are going to get hurt. Italy and Romano are literally oceans right now because they are crying so much. Lithuania is too busy trying to comfort Latvia that Ukraine is having to comfort Belarus, Estonia, and Russia. China is in a frenzy because, with your pregnancy, this fever could kill you and your unborn child. You actually invoked fear into that old dragon's heart. Hungary and Canada are literally nothing but puddles of sadness right now, and Prussia can't even comfort them because he's a blubbering mess. Japan is terrified right now. He is trying to take care of you and is beginning to cry because nothing is working. Oh God, America. Finland, Sweden, Iceland, and Denmark are trying so hard to be strong. But even Sweden is crying at this point. I need not mention how your husband is feeling right now. Everyone is scared, Alfred. They are scared of losing you. I doubt that they would ever be mean to you again, especially after this," Norway spoke these words firmly, but with a soft tone.
Alfred finally got a handle on his breathing and began to calm down. The world around them began to turn into white light, and Lukas hugged Alfred as they were engulfed in it.
Norway appeared to the crowd of nations, slightly smiling. China had noticed this and was about to ask why he was happy when they all heard a small groan. America softly fluttered his eyes open and moved his neck slowly. China smiled brightly as tears flew down his cheeks. He hugged America and kissed his head.
"You gave us a real scare, aru! Are you feeling any pain anywhere?" China asked as he and Japan helped America sit up comfortably. Alfred was about to answer when multiple arms wrapped around him. Alfred felt his shirt soak up tears from England, France, and Spain. He looked down at his father countries with a worried look.
"G-guys... I'm ok now... I must have caught a small cold from being in the snow for too long..." Alfred tried to explain, straining a smile upon his face. Germany was next to join the hug, then Italy, Prussia, Canada, and even Hungary. Everybody was hugging America, feeling the warmth radiate from his body, "it was just a nightmare. I'll be ok," Alfred was beginning to feel a bit claustrophobic, "guys, seriously. I can't breathe. The hug is too tight," everybody instantly jumped off. Ivan was still cuddled next to his husband, spooning him gently. Ukraine put her lips on Alfred's forehead.
"You are still very warm, Alfred. I will get a cool bath ready so you can soak," Ukraine got up and walked into the on-suite bathroom.
"Do you want anything, Alfred?" Raivis asked, smiling softly. Alfred smiled back and shook his head.
"I just need a soak and some food. I can do it on my own Raivis. I wouldn't want you or the others overworking yourselves. I make you guys do enough already. There isn't a need to worry over me. Thank you for offering though, it means a lot," Alfred spoke softly. The other nations looked shocked. Alfred didn't want to overwork or stress them out. Even though HE is the one who's pregnant. He was still being selfless, even when he couldn't fully function. Ukraine came back in just in time for Quincy to wake up. The other nations looked towards the nursery as Tino walked to the cries.
"Ivan, why don't you take care of Alfred? We can cook breakfast and prepare for the day," she smiled. Alfred was about to object when Ivan nodded, picking America up bridal style and carrying him into the bathroom. Tino came out with a freshly changed Quincy, wiping sanitizer on his hands.
"I will keep Quincy occupied, England would you like to assist me while the others cook?" Finland asked. The Brit nodded as the nations left the room. Norway was pale, the scene from the dream engraved in his head. Denmark noticed and put an arm around him.
"Tell me what you saw when we're alone," Mathias whispered. Lukas nodded in affirmation as they all went to the kitchen to cook.
