The Big Day
*:・゚✧ *:・゚
I walked onto the terrace clutching a small floral bouquet in my hands. The nature surrounding the stately countryside Manor brought a grounding element of calm to the otherwise overwhelming grandeur of the wedding location.
Today was finally the day.
I could hear the excited tinkle of chatter below as more and more guests flooded in through the gates in time for the ceremony.
White and pale pink flowers adorned every crevice of the stony fortress, creating the perfect combination of charm and luxury.
The whole place was brimming with a distinct air of love and romance, I smiled, taking it all in.
Breathing in the fresh morning air, I was feeling a lot better than I did last night.
Helping Alyssa get ready for her big day and seeing how happy and excited she was, helped me to put any negative thoughts aside for the time being. Today wasn't about me.
I turned to Alyssa who stood beside me on the terrace looking out. She was also holding her bouquet- one much larger and elaborate than mine and wearing an ivory gown longer and more decorated than mine.
Both the bride and bridesmaids were wearing the same shade of ivory.
Alyssa, never worried about being out shone by anyone- her eyes lit up with delight after we were all done getting dressed.
"We all look like sisters!" She had exclaimed.
The fronds of the delicate flower crown she wore wobbled slightly on her head as she gazed around at all of us. Bright-eyed and pink-cheeked, she was nearly bursting with sheer glee and excitement.
Remembering what Ji- Woo telling me about the way her sweet and confident nature drew him to her and I could see it myself now after getting to know her more over the past few months as her maid of honour.
I couldn't begin to say how happy I really was for her... and Ji.
In spite of the way he'd reacted to the news about Jungkook and I, he was my brother and friend.
A rustling wind swept up to our balcony from the sprawling courtyard. It bustled my dress and I turned my eyes on Alyssa to make sure that her hair was still ok.
We both caught each other's gaze and laughed at once shielding our faces from the breeze.
"Let's head inside."
I took her by the hand and led the tuft of her wedding dress though the entryway first.
When we got safely inside, I knelt down to fix the hem of her dress but then paused to look up, my heart feeling full all of a sudden.
"Thank you for choosing me to be your maid of honour, Aylssa. I know that it hasn't been easy putting up with me and all the relationship drama.." I say quietly before carefully rising to my full height.
"No Mel.... thank you...for all this," She gestured around at the pristine surroundings.
"It's what I do," I chuckled, "Guess my PR chops makes up for all the trouble I've caused?" I blush, "I'm sorry if I ever made any part of the lead-up to your special day hard for you."
"Mel you have nothing to be sorry about." She looked at me thoughtfully, "You really don't."
The rest of the bridal party hovered around inside, waiting to be called down to the main hall below.
"Did you and Ji get a chance to talk last night?" She asked.
"We did." I replied, not wanting to say anymore.
Luckily, after a short moment, a small bell chimed and Alyssa's eyes met mine. Glossed over with emotion, she gave an anxious look my way. I offered a quick, warm hug to calm her nerves.
She smiled at me, somewhat comforted and I took her hand, squeezing.
"You've got this! You look perfect." I said.
"Really?" Usually always calm and serene, it was strange to see the Alyssa I knew, look so nervous.
"Really," I assured her, tipping my chin in the direction of the inside to encourage her to start making her way down.
All the other bridesmaids had started trickling down the the stairwell.
One more glance cast over my shoulder at the picturesque, eight acres of sweeping lawns and a peculiar sight caught my attention.
Just by the tall trees surrounding the manicured gardens below- several men dressed elegantly in white milled around the perimeters, speaking into ear-pieces.
I snagged Alyssa by the elbow just before she could get inside.
"What are they doing here?" I questioned.
Her brows furrowed at first but then realising what I was staring at, Alyssa only let out a relaxed laugh.
"Oh, Ji said they are Junkgook's security." She looked amused, "I suppose that's standard when there's a world-famous celebrity at your wedding.." She chuckled and shuffled indoors.
I mimicked her laugh, hoping that the smile I wore masked my uneasiness.
The live band played and I tried to block out any feelings and memories of the last time I walked down an isle like this one.
I saw Jungkook as we neared the pulpit. He smiled at me from behind Ji Woo's shoulder and for some reason, I had to look away.
My eyes found Ji-Woo instead who I gave a congratulatory grin before fixing the bustle of Alyssa's gown and taking a huge step back.
I zoned out, the words of the ceremony sort of blurring in the background.
I fiddled with the petals of my bouquet, then let my eyes sweep over the crowd. Their faces were filled with joy and expectation. Ji- Woo's mother's eyes sparkled with happiness while his dad's face shone with pride.
A dull flash of memory brings back the contrasting vision of myself surrounded by a crowd whose expressions were filled with shock and pity instead.
I blinked, shaking my head and trying to concentrate on the present but nothing could stop the sadness that pierced like a knife straight through my chest, twisting with every minute that passed.
I looked up sharply to pay attention the ceremony but regretted it immediately as I eyes locked with Jungkook.
He eyed me steadily and I looked away quickly.
The vows began and Alyssa spoke first.
'Ji Woo,' she said, "It is the Divine will of...."
Again, my mind zoned in and out of the words I was hearing as I fought the urge to look Jungkook's way again.
"My soul is knit with yours...."
I chewed on my lip and stared hard at my feet but they were covered by the sweeping evening dress that pooled on the ground. There wasn't much to look at so I kept my eyes glued to the floor instead.
"It is but a divided life I live without you. And this moment, now you are with me, and I feel that our hearts are filled with the same love..."
Alyssa voice echoed softly off of the stone walls.
Shortly after, Ji Woo began his own vows.
Lost in my own head, I could hardly listen to a word. I wished this wasn't so hard for me. I thought I would be okay.
Ji Woo paused from his meaningful inflection and looked at Alyssa with sincere and loving eyes.
He spoke many words but I didn't listen.
'....that we will never part." he uttered finally, bringing his speech to an end.
As a brief silence fell, my attention flicked uncontrollably towards Jungkook again whose eyes had clearly, never left me.
Their dark depths swirled with untelling emotion. Who knew what he was feeling?
But all eyes were on us too. We knew it and Jungkook was trying not to react in front of everyone. I could see it in the way that his jaw flexed and by the way his nose twitched a little like a bunny.
Not wanting to let him down, I put my chin up bravely and endured the rest of the ceremony too.
"Till death parts us." The newly wedded couple chorused in unision.
And they kissed each other with a deep joy. Everyone clapped and cheered as their beaming faces turned towards the crowd.
"What greater thing is there than for two human souls, to be joined together for life—" The priest boomed jovially.
"To strengthen each other in all labour, to rest on each other in all sorrow, to minister to each other in all pain, to be one with each other in silent unspeakable memories even until the moment of their last parting breath?"
***
I'm back to my normal self once we're out of that wedding hall and everybody happily floods out into the garden to take photos.
Apart from my mini mental breakdown during the wedding ceremony today is beautiful and dare I say, fun?
Jimin and Jungkook are joking around and ruffling each other's hair as the groomsmen take their pictures and I can't help but smile watching Jungkook break into a huge grin, hanging over the shoulders of his older brother as they pose for more and more pictures.
The girls wave around their bouquets and giggle, fussing with their dresses and doing their best for the cameras. I am careful to hide behind whoever is standing in front of me, not wanting my tummy to show up in any of the pictures. My baby bump is still pretty subtle but I can never be too sure.
The camera and the naked eye are two completely different things!
The wedding party spent quite a while outside enjoying the photo-op before joining the other guests for drinks in the cocktail bar.
A crowd of about a hundred-and-fifty people wandered the gorgeous stone terrace nibbling on strawberries and sipping on Prosecco while drinking in the breath-taking views.
I grabbed a fruity non-alcoholic something from a waiter then snuck off to find a bit of peace.
Enjoying the cool breeze on my bare shoulders, a warm hand touched my back suddenly, making me turn in surprise.
"There you are," Jungkook smiled down at me shyly.
"Hey," I said, turning back around and taking a nonchalant sip from the glass.
He came up to stand beside me. Our elbows touching, I immediately felt that familiar electricity between us and bit my lip trying my best not to look at him.
I desperately fought the urge to throw myself at Jungkook and beg for him to hold me and instead, I stood still.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Of course, why wouldn't I be?" I said with bravado.
"I'm really sorry Mel...if it weren't for me.."
"I really wish you would stop saying that," I interrupted, coldly.
"I know that must've been hard for you back there..." He trailed off, his voice breaking with uncertainty of what to say next.
"It was hard," I gulped, "But I'm fine." I said quietly.
"Can I show you something, Mel?" Jungkook asked suddenly.
My curiosity peaked when I saw a spark of mischief in his dark eyes.
With the chaos of emotions tearing through me since last night I hadn't had the chance to notice just how handsome Jungkook looked today.
He was dressed in all white just like the other groomsmen but to me, he was evidently more striking. A chic, silk designer scarf draped beautifully over his broad shoulders, falling elegantly against the exquisitely tailored suit that adorned his fit, athletic frame.
I blushed, heat prickling all over my body as he turned me to face him and brushed his thumb lightly over my lips, cupping my chin.
"Come with me.." he whispered.
My footsteps followed his fast as we slipped away from the party and out onto the grounds of the vast estate.
He led the way, turning back to me, lacing my fingers with his, "Did you know that this location boasts one of the most charming wildflower meadows in the country?" He smiled.
My heart leaped right away as we continued walking and Jungkook explained further while leading me carefully over the grass.
"I know a girl who kind-of has a thing for wild flower meadows..." he teased, "I thought that she might like to see it." he said.
"Why are you being such a freak and talking about me in the third person?" I pinched his arm and he crouched over in momentary anguish.
"Oww!" Jungkook cried.
I giggled feeling satisfied with myself.
Picking on Jungkook was always one of my favourite things.
Someone so strong, skilled and perfect....I could never get enough of messing with him sometimes. Seeing his delicate lips frown or gasp in surprise. Watching his chestnut brown eyes widen in confusion or his brows crease with dismay as he played along.
Jungkook grabbed me, pulling us past the perimeter. Our bodies perfectly camouflaged behind a dense thicket. He kissed me hard and deep. I struggled for breath as my body themed with excitement. My fingers tangled in his hair frantically, tugging gently at the soft strands as he nibbled playfully on my lip then slipped his tongue into my mouth again, making me let out a soft and needy moan.
I felt Jungkook harden against me and shivered at the sound of his ragged breath. As I was about to slip my arms around his waist, he pulled away quickly.
"Before we get too carried away," He panted softly with a smirk, "Turn around, love."
The sight I beheld made me tear up almost immediately.
Thousands of tiny yellow flowers swayed in a sea of green, their long stems swaying calmly in the breeze. An earthy, pungent perfume filled our lungs, wrapping us both in the warm embrace of pure nostalgia.
"Kookie, this looks just like...." My vision started getting cloudy.
I turned to Jungkook who turned me around, holding me close from behind.
I closed my eyes, letting a tear slide silently down my cheek.
"....like the place where I asked you to marry me?" He whispered. I felt him smile against my cheek, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"Yes," I nodded slowly in agreement.
Closing my fingers over hands that were joined together at my front, I found the courage to ask the question I'd been to afraid to all these years gone by.
"Jungkook, tell me the real reason why you left me."
"Melanie.." Jungkook sighed before he began to explain but the hard pounding of rushed footsteps on the earth from behind, brings our moment to a screeching halt.
By instinct, Jungkook pushes me harshly to the ground.
I yelp in pain and surprise feeling my body hit the ground. Spinning around, he produces a small metal object from his waist.
"Stay down, Melanie!" Jungkook roared at me.
From the low place where I lay in the grass, I felt too afraid to look up. But I could still see three pairs of feet clad in all- black, storming towards us.
One swift movement by Jungkook, followed by the ear-splitting ring of gun-shots through the air brings the three assailants to their knees.
They all fall in a sickening thud on the grass.
I remained there, frozen in shock.
"Melanie you have to get up," Jungkook gruffed.
The sound of more gunshots ringing through the air and distant screams heard from the other side of the bushes makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
I looked up at Jungkook in terror still paralysed with fright.
He turned to look down at me and I was surprised to see no fear in his eyes at all, but a dangerous calm and determined anger etching gradually into his face.
Scarlet stains speckled his outfit, no longer white and immaculate.
When I didn't move, he grabbed my arm roughly.
"Melanie, there's no time. We have to move!"
I stumbled, tripping over my dress, too striken to even glance at the three dead bodies as Jungkook pulled me along with him through the grass. Surprisingly, his face remained like steel as if he was no stranger to seeing dead bodies at all.
"Jungkook, did you just? You.....you killed those people!" I blubbered.
"I know." He replied flatly, still marching back towards the manor.
"You know...?" I sputtered, "Who were they?" My chest stung from running so fast. It was sheer madness and chaos when we finally arrived back at the building.
What happened out in the field was barely half the terror that would strike me that day, I came learn as Jungkook and I burst through the french doors into the once elegant Silver Ballroom.
The scene made my stomach churn.
The grand culinary feast once meant for celebration was now scattered worthlessly around the four corners of the room. Blood mingled with red wine, tables and chairs were turned over and broken. Even as we burst in through the doors, a few people were seen still clamouring for their escape.
Jungkook's steely glare scanned the room for anymore signs of danger, his gun raised, handling it with ease.
Ear-splitting screams were heard from all different directions and I tried to steady myself, feeling my world spinning around me.
"Mel!" Jungkook motioned stiffly for me to stay behind him as he proceeded to back us out of the room again seeing that it was clear.
Just then, a harsh dry hand briskly closed over my mouth and I wailed in trepidation!
Panic and alarm coursed through me as I writhed in the unseen abductor's grip. It was too late by the time Jungkook spun around.
I as pinned against the chest of this unknown man.
Jungkook held his gun high, aiming it straight at the person holding me.
The stranger's cumbersome frame weighed heavily on my back. He chuckled. A wheezy, dark chuckle that made my blood run cold as the stink of his breath wafted to my nostrils filling it with the stifling scent of bad breath and tobacco.
"Let her go." Jungkook demanded angrily, "Its me that you want."
The stranger jostled me hard by the shoulders, making my neck hurt and I cried into his disgusting palm in pain.
"Let her go!" Jungkook screamed but hesitated to make any sudden move out of caution.
The cold sensation of hard metal stung my scalp and I squeezed my eyes shut, feeling the end of the metal rod pushed hard against my skull.
The abductors chest heaved with mirthless laughter as pressed the gun even harder making me wince and cower in his grip.
A loud bang echoed from the other end of the room and Yoongi, Namjoon and Jimin simultaneously burst into the ballroom carrying guns in their grasp too.
My eyes widened.
What was going on?
They all slowed in their approach upon seeing the that I was held with a gun to my head.
Flanking Jungkook from behind, they all pointed their weapons at my captor.
"Do anything stupid and I'll blow her pretty brains out." The stranger growled.
I have never felt so afraid in my life.
I didn't care about me. My every thought was about Peanut!
"Don't!" I screamed, clawing this evil man's dirty hand away from mouth, "Please don't hurt me. I have a baby... I'm pregnant!" I wailed pathetically.
My body shook with tears, hopeful that this nightmare would somehow disappear.
I didn't care about anything else going on around me at that moment, I just wanted to live! The life inside me depended on it.
My eyes searched the four men defending me, urging them to do something.
Yoongi, Namjoon and Jimin all look shocked at my confession but I could see their grips tighten around their guns as if waiting for some type of signal.
"Is that so..." My attacker's voice held very little pity as he forced the metal harder into my scalp and I feel the skin break and burn.
I whimpered loudly which seemed to amuse him even more.
"We know." He crooned, "This is what will make killing you all the more enjoyable," rough stubble scratched callously on my skin as he hissed menacingly into my ear.
At that, Jungkook's nostrils flare with rage and I witness a darkness in his eyes that I'd never seen before in my life.
He grits his teeth and in the blink of an eye, he pulls the trigger.
The weight of my attacker falls away.
As his lifeless body tumbles to the floor behind me, I collapse in a heap.
Relief runs through me like cold water as my mind buzzes in static shock.
When I finally catch my breath, I glare at the hardened, ruthless features of my ex. Splattered with blood- his gun still held high in mid-air, his chest rising and falling powerfully.
It is then that I realise, I had never known the man standing right in front of me at all.
