Strangers

                                                     *:・゚✧ *:・゚

I left the hotel the next morning with my signed divorce papers in hand.

Jungkook agreed to my wishes after realising that sex the night before hadn't changed anything.

I told him that I didn't see a future for us. And while I could forgive him and try to let go of the past, I couldn't forget it.

Flagging down the closest taxi, I quickly went to my apartment building where I took a well needed shower and changed into some comfortable yoga gear.

My eyes scanned the room for my phone as I emerged into my living room.

I caught my reflection in a nearby mirror and stood still for a few seconds.

Gazing into my own eyes, I wondered if I was doing the right thing? I mean, this is what I've been wanting all along so there was no need to hesitate now.

I tear myself away from the mirror to find my phone laying on my favourite lavender sofa and sink down. I procrastinate a little by rubbing the pads of my fingertips along the ridges of the soft silicone where the volume buttons of my phone are. I flip the casing over in my hand to reveal the smooth, black glass of the screen.

Taking a sharp breath in, I dial Matt's number.

He doesn't take long to pick up, "Melanie?"

"Matt, I- I have the papers." my cold fingers close around the paper envelope next to me and as I squeeze my eyes shut and take a deep breath, a single tear runs down my cheek.

The silence on the phone line perplexes my poor lawyer, "Melanie? Melanie are you there? Are you alright?"

"Yes, Matt. I'm fine, just get here as quickly as you can, ok?"

                                                         ***

Sifting through piles of parchment paper, I search for a matching sheet bearing gold-leaf writing. I hiss victoriously when I find it. Fastening it to the glittery cardboard background and I hold it up triumphantly, showing it to Alyssa.

"Looks perfect!" she squeals, absolutely delighted.

We've been sitting on her kitchen floor putting her and Ji Woo's 'save- the- dates'  together. While doing this, I explained what happened between me and Jungkook after the concert a month ago.

I hadn't seen them in such a long time, it was the least that I could do to help with the wedding after disappearing on everyone.

The finalisation of my divorce was a little harder on me than I'd imagined. I needed to renew my mind so I could get back to work, my business and my new love-life.

Eric said he would wait for me and didn't mind me going away on my holistic retreat to the rain forests in Brazil.

"So, he asked you to take him back?" Alyssa questions, threading carefully.

I nod.

"And you said, no?"

"You know what they say, 'Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me!' " I shrug, making a neat stack out of the envelopes on the ground next to me.

" I have to admit, I'm a little bummed that things turned out this way. You guys used to be so good together!" Alyssa comments.

"I know, we were. But that was before. Jungkook....he's changed. He's not my Kookie anymore. The man who asked me to spend the rest of my life with him, would never have done what he did to me."

"I don't know," Alyssa shakes her head in denial, "Everybody deserves another chance, Mel."

"That's just the way I am," I explain, "When my trust is broken its too hard for me to...."

"I get it. I'm sorry, I don't mean to push," she says in her soothing, fairy voice and I smile. I know that she's conflicted between her allegiance to either of us. And I also know that she only wants what's best for me. Its just the kind of person she is.

"You're very sweet, Alyssa but I need someone in my life that I can count on for more than just a good dicking down every now and then. I don't want to lay awake at night in a relationship with someone that I can't trust."

The truth was, I didn't know who Jungkook was anymore. Even the next morning when I woke up next to him, everything felt alien to me. We were different than before. He was different.

A second chance was out of the question.

I attach another sprig of dried flowers to the card with my glue gun and wrap some fine twine around the middle into a cute little bow.

There!

120 invitations, done.

Wiping my sweaty palms down the front of my jeans, I get up from the table.

"Want something to eat?" Alyssa asks, graciously.

"Sure!" I call out in reply before scrambling to my feet in a hurry.

"Where are you going?" she asks, looking at me wide eyed.

"I  just need to use the bathroom.."

Alyssa acknowledges my answer and heads off in the direction of the kitchen.

I could have sworn that I heard her mutter, "Again?..." under her breath.

But I must be imagining things because when I turn to look over my shoulder, she's already busying herself by fishing around in the kitchen cabinets for plates.

Swinging the door to the bathroom open, I rush to free my zipper so I can finally relieve myself!

Sitting there all morning, dedicatedly stuffing envelopes does take its toll on a girl's bladder.

I close my eyes, letting out a deep sigh of relief as the rush of fluid leaves my body.

When I enter the dining space a few moments later, Alyssa sets a bowl of her vegan stew down in front of me. Its a little different but I've had this before and it usually tastes much better than it looks.

However, this time, the smell of the vegetable concoction floods my nostrils, making me feel strangely nauseous, right away.

I scramble to get up, noisily pushing back my chair to run because I can feel the contents of my stomach rising to the surface.

"Is something wrong? Is it a hair?" Alyssa bends over my dish to examine it.

"Shit!" I garble, feeling the sting of bile in my throat.

I don't make it to bathroom on time. Before I can help it, my breakfast is everywhere!

My morning muesli is all over Alyssa and Ji Woo's dining room floor.

I clamp my hands over my mouth and cringe when my hands are wet with the remnants of vomit still dribbled down my chin.

"Alyssa. Oh my gosh I'm so sorry!"

"It's okay, its okay." she pats me soothingly on the shoulder, guiding me back into the bathroom where I wash my mouth out and get cleaned up.

"I'll help you clean it up," I spin around, eager to fix my mistake, "Is there a mop....anything that I can use?"

"No, no Mel wait. Sit down for a minute."

Alyssa sits me down. She regards my flushed face and instead of her looking totally pissed off at the fact that I just condemned her beautiful little fairy nook into a steaming hot pool of barf, she is smiling gently at me.

She's giving me the softest look and I stare back at her, utterly perplexed by her calm reaction.

"What?" I ask, feeling mildly freaked out.

"Melanie, do you think you might be.....?"

I look back at her slack- jawed and she blinks expectantly. Her eyes sparkle with joy.

I can't believe that she's implying....

But hold on a minute....

No!

In a blink of an eye, I'm grabbing my purse and hastily pecking a confused looking Alyssa goodbye on the cheek.

Racing to the safety of my car, I start the engine and don't stop until I get to my first red light.

My mind is buzzing as I rest my forehead against the cool leather of the steering wheel. I take even breaths in and out, trying to process the possibility that I could be....

No, I can't be..

My bladder suddenly twinges, telling me that I need to pee again and my eyes shoot open as the person behind me starts honking their horn repeatedly.

The light's gone green.

"Damn you, Jeon Jungkook!"
