Comeback

"I'll take that..." Jungkook quickly swipes a heavy-ish vase of fresh flowers from my grasp.
"Hey!" I protest but he quickly quiets me with the subtle warning of one raised eyebrow.
"You need to take it easy, Mel. I don't want our little Peanut, to get hurt..." He whispers in my ear with a tiny smirk on his lips while I inhaled nervously, glancing around.
"Will you stop! What if someone overhears?" I hiss, feeling panicked.
It felt bad enough already to know that everyone who mattered, now knew I was pregnant besides the one person who was supposed to be my 'best-friend', Ji-Woo.
I didn't want him to hear about my pregnancy from anyone else but me and I was scared to death that Jungkook would not be able to keep his big, excited, baby-obsessed mouth... shut.
It was however, soul-warmingly cute, the way Jungkook immediately took to the idea of us becoming parents.
I had no clue how he'd react to be honest but Jungkook surpassed any expectations I could have ever imagined for him as a father-to-be.
The next morning after I broke the news and we made up, I was awakened by a phone-call.
Finding myself alone in the bedroom of my apartment when we had fallen asleep in each other's arms the night before- I immediately felt a sense of familiar doubt upon opening my eyes to empty surroundings.
But when I answered the phone it none other than, Jungkook himself, calling me from the Baby section of Nordstrom Rack!
I smiled and blushed into the receiver listening to Jungkook feverishly question me about whether we should buy pink or blue or forget it -- just go with neutral colours instead because he was too excited to wait until we found out the sex of the baby. And what if he or she came early? We should start putting nursery items on lay-away now.
He finally released me from the conversation when I heard him yelp from spilling hot coffee down his front! Apparently he tripped over a stuffed baby elephant while roaming around the store.
I looked over again at Jungkook who had already started busying himself with arranging the flowers he had taken from my hands.
His dark head bowed in concentration. His pink lips forming an 'o' shape as he adjusted one gardenia, just so.
Everyone looked happy and mildly surprise to see him turn up at the wedding rehearsal today. But no one said anything.
We ran through the ceremony proceedings and now the wedding party were all lending a hand in getting the stately country house ready for Alyssa and Ji-Woo's big day tomorrow.
There was also a rehearsal dinner scheduled for tonight right here at the countryside manor and my eyes wandered over his back, shoulder, arms absentmindedly, heart fluttering just like it did when we first started dating seven years ago. It was too good to be true that he was right here with me....with us.
I couldn't take my eyes off of him, even if I tried.
"What are you making bedroom eyes at?" Alyssa interrupted in a sweetly inquisitive tone, making me startle.
I let out a little squeak of surprise and she laughed heartily, her gentle features warming towards me.
"What eyes...I was just..." I stammered, turning my back from Jungkook's direction and began fussing with a bit of translucent fabric.
"Will you hand me those pins over there?" I asked hurriedly, ignoring her assertion but Alyssa's cheshire cat grin did anything else but disappear.
I moved along the rows and rows of little white chairs, setting myself to work.
Draping an elegant garland along the aisle, I fastened the gathering, one pin in hand, another between my teeth.
I toiled away silently under Alyssa's un-deterring gaze and even heard her chuckle softly as I accidentally pricked myself with a pin. After I finished expertly glue-gunning the floaty sash to the end of the last pew, Alyssa swooped right in and whisked me away by the arm, out onto the terrace.
The view leading out from the french doors, swept over the charming stone patio and opened up onto a stunning walled garden that I just knew would make a gorgeous backdrop for all the wedding photos we would be taking the next day. It absolutely stole my breath away!
I wasn't sure if it was just the good mood I was in but there was just something uniquely magical about this grand countryside manor.
"Mel," Alyssa called, stealing my attention away from the scenery, an expectant look on her face.
"You look so happy," She sighed.
"Well, I guess I am.... a little," I blushed looking down at my gucci loafers and wondered if Alyssa could see the smile that I fought back with every muscle in my face.
"Does this maybe have something to do with Jungkook and you two getting back together?" She pried.
My head flashed up at her words. Surprise washing any colour that was spattered across my face right back to where it came from.
"What...who told you that?"
Alyssa gave me a skeptical look.
"Well he's here," Her eyes widened excitedly, "And you're glowing...I mean really glowing!"
"Well that....that's mostly because of the baby but if he heard you say that, I admit- he would totally take all the credit," I laughed.
"So he knows about the..." Her eyes flicked from the stomach area of the oversized shirt-dress I was wearing and then back up to my face.
"Yeah, he knows," I couldn't help but smile.
She let out a hushed squeal and I pled with her silently so as to not draw any unwanted attention from inside.
"So are you back together?" Alyssa crowed softly, "Oh my goodness, Mel this is great. This is wonderful and just in time for the wedding! Oooh!" She delicately clapped her little fairy hands together.
"Uh, we're working on it." I said slowly.
"Aaaahh!" She squealed again out of excitement in spite of me trying to dull down the situation.
"Alyssa, please!" I took both her hands, "Just don't say anything until I talk to Ji-Woo myself, ok?"
Her gaze dampened at my fervent request.
All along I thought that I was the one putting our friendship on the back-burner but looking back at it now and regarding the situation with an objective eye. It became clear that perhaps, Ji-Woo was also avoiding me a little bit too?
"Did Ji-Woo say anything about me?" I ask Alyssa suddenly, "Like, did he ever seem upset with me or....I mean, because I know that I caused a lot of trouble on the trip and..."
"No," Aylssa's angel-like face contorted in dismay, "God, no! He would have told me if anything was wrong. Ji loves you hun."
I snorted with laughter.
"Okay, you do know that sounds really weird coming from his fiancee, right?"
Alyssa chortled airily, her laugh ringing out into the gardens.
"Don't be silly, I've known exactly what the relationship between you two has been like from day one and I respect it. You guys are good for each other. To be honest you're right, he has been cracking up a little bit lately but nothing out of the ordinary."
She cast her eyes to the clouds in retrospective thought.
"...I had put it all down to stress about the wedding. Hmm. Maybe you should talk to him."
"I will now for sure, thanks!"
***
Warm tender hands found my wrists just as I was about to enter the silver ballroom for the rehearsal dinner.
Surprise caught in my throat but was soon replaced by a comforting relief as my ex pulled me into the shadows, tucking both our bodies behind a pillar in a lovesick embrace.
I let out a gleeful chuckle as Jungkook's deep brown eyes found mine. Shining down at me with so much love, I gazed back, completely enamoured.
"You look beautiful," He whispered.
"Thanks, you don't look too bad yourself," I answered appreciating the well tailored suit he was wearing with a deep burgundy shirt on the inside, flattering his complexion.
Jungkook smirked sexily at my response, keeping his eyes on mine as he held my body tighter then kissed my shoulder right at the straps of the champagne-coloured wrap dress I was wearing.
He eagerly stole a second kiss. This one lingering on my lips. I closed my eyes savouring the moment but not for too long.
"We should really get going..." I said in a hushed tone. Jungkook caressed the outlines of my face.
"Fine..." He breathed out a little impatiently, resting his forehead on mine.
As he stepped out into the corridor, he made a triangle with his arm but I stood there, hesistant to take it.
"Uh...maybe we should go in on our own?" I asked trying my best not to should as awkward as I felt.
"Mel," His eyes saddened.
"I know, I know..." I rushed to him. I was exhausted from pleading with people all day but it would be too much to suddenly waltz out into the world in front of all his family and friends. Especially after we'd had such a public breakup! I'd shown so much contempt for my ex and very openly. Seeing us together all of a sudden would be sure to set tongues wagging around the dinner table.
No.
We would have to ease into this.
Its what was best for me.... and my mental health right now.
"Tonight isn't about us," I reminded, "It's about Ji- Woo and Alyssa. Its their special night, lets not be selfish alright?"
"But how is this being selfish, Mel? I want to be by your side. We shouldn't have to hide it... we were married already, for Christ's sake!" Jungkook complains.
"That's just the thing..." I clasped my hands together nervously, wanting to be truthful, "We were married...and then we weren't..."
Jungkook's face hardens.
"I just need time to adjust." I swallowed hard, hoping that what I was saying didn't hurt him. Hoping that he wouldn't take it the wrong way.
Jungkook must have read my expression right because his gaze softened but there was no hiding his diappointment either.
"Okay," He said bravely, smoothing his hands over his outfit, "I guess, I'll see you out there then..." He muttered teasingly walking down the corridor and out into the light of the room, "But don't think I'll be able to keep my eyes off of you tonight, love!"
