Sixty-Seven

"We've matched your DNA to skin found under her finger nails. Your blood and hair were on her shirt."

"I've already explained it." Rohan's leg pounded up and down. "The day you interviewed everyone. I told you what happened." He gripped his head and sighed. This couldn't be happening. His life was just beginning and now it was going to abruptly end.

"Tell us again, Mister Wayland."

"Why? Are you accusing me of murdering Sally?"

"From the information we've gathered you fit perfectly. You and she were on bad terms. Miss Parks was killed at eight fifteen and according to you, you didn't get to your girlfriends until nine-thirty. That gives you plenty of time to do the deed so I suggest you co-operate with us and tell us again what happened that day."

The door opened. Rohan looked up to see Harry dressed in a suit and carrying a brief case. "My client has said enough."

"Harry!"

"Sit tight, Rohan, and let me handle this." Harry smiled sympathetically. To him Rohan looked like the man who'd first walked into Ruby's. "We'll get this sorted soon enough." He turned to the officer. "Are you Detective Day?"

"I am." David Day held out his hand. "And you are?"

"Harry Butler. QC. I believe my client has already given you a statement."

"We have new evidence which pinpoints Mister Wayland as our prime suspect."

"I'd like to see it and confer with my client in private."

Detective Day slid the lab report and witness statements towards Harry. "Help yourself."

When the door closed Harry patted Rohan on the shoulder. "Try not to worry. I'll have you out of here in a jiffy." Harry read the reports and let out a low whistle. "This doesn't look good."

"Did... didn't she trip?" Rohan couldn't stop his leg from shaking while he remained seated so he stood up and paced the floor. "How does that make me a... a murderer?"

Harry looked up from the report. "Forensics say she was hit on the head with a blunt instrument first."

"What? They think I... I hit her?" Rohan slammed the wall with his open palm. "I can't believe this is happening. Fuck Sally. She always had it in for me and now she's finally got me."

"Did you threaten to kill her, Rohan? Witnesses have said they heard you threaten to break her neck." Harry studied the witness statements.

"No. Yes. I was angry. I just said it. She wouldn't stop harassing me. It was just words. I'd never do it." Rohan gasped and paced the floor.

"Sit down, Rohan. We'll get to the truth of it. You have witnesses and Annie will testify you were with her that night."

"But I worked late. Finished around seven-thirty and went to Annie's after. It took me ages to build up the courage to knock on her door. It was around nine-thirty when I finally did. Apparently, Sally was pushed down the stairs around eight fifteen. There's CTV footage of her leaving her office and heading in the direction of the back stairs. They're saying I had plenty of time to kill her, and then go to Annie's."

"It's all circumstantial. The blood. The skin tissue under her nails has all been explained. I'll get a look at the footage. As for the time factor we'll find witnesses who saw you on the bus and pacing outside Annie's unit. Someone's bound to have seen you." Harry cocked his head and smirked. "After all you tend to stand out in a crowd." He sighed and added, "I'm going to get Mal to work with me on this so try not to worry."

"Mal?"

Harry chuckled. "He's a private detective. The best in the business. He used to be a cop so he knows all the strings to pull. The worst that will happen today is they'll put you in the lock up overnight but I'll see what I can do." Harry stood up and tapped on the glass knowing the police would have listened to every word that had been said.

"Have you arrested him yet?" Harry peered at the freckled face Detective.

"Not yet. Just getting all my ducks in a row." Day glanced from Harry Butler to Rohan Wayland. The man was definitely guilty. He could tell just by his body language.

"I want him released."

"Not gonna happen today, sir. I've got enough evidence to hold him for twenty-four hours without charge."

Harry sighed. "Sorry, Rohan. It's one night. I'll have you out as soon as I can tomorrow."

"No." Rohan gasped. "I didn't do anything wrong." He gripped his head. "What about Annie. What's Annie going to think?"

"Don't worry, Mister Wayland, she's on our list to be interviewed since she's part of your alibi."

Rohan looked from the detective to Harry. "She can't find out that way, Harry. Can you talk to her? Tell her."

Harry nodded. "It's going to be okay, Rohan. I'll tell her." He smiled. "If I know Annie, she's one tough little lady. It'll be okay, don't panic."

Harry climbed into his car and called Sid. "Hey, Mate. It's not good. They're holding Rohan overnight."

"You mean they've charged him?" Sid scratched his head and paced his lounge room floor with his phone against his ear.

"No. Not yet but they've got enough evidence to hold him for twenty-four hours." Harry sighed. "The poor buggers in a state and worried how Annie's going to take it. The police are going to interview her tonight or early tomorrow. Can you tell Ruby and Gus? Get Ruby to talk to Annie before the police go there because Rohan doesn't want her to find out that way."

"Sure Harry. I'll get onto it straight away."

The evidence is stacking up so not looking good for Rohan :(
