Seventy-Three
Ruby worried. Annie wasn't coping well with the news of Rohan's arrest. She looked around the café. Everyone seemed extra quiet. Annie had insisted on coming to work. She'd said she needed to be busy otherwise she was going to go insane.
Sid lifted his hand so Ruby grabbed an empty cup and took the pot with her. She slid into the booth, topped up his mug and filled hers.
"How's she doing?" Sid glanced over his shoulder, and then back at Ruby.
"Not great." Ruby took a sip. "Is it me or has that girl lost weight overnight?"
"She's just worried. Looks drained." Sid sighed and scratched the back of his head. "You reckon he could have done it?"
Ruby shrugged, and then grinned. "You know I had Rohan pinned as a crazy when he first came in."
"Yeah..." Gus slid onto the seat beside Ruby and chuckled. "If you remember it was me who asked Sid and Harry to follow her to the bus."
"Just goes to show how wrong a person can be." Ruby paused. "I don't think he could've done it but you never know. They say a person can never truly know another."
"Harry'll sort it." Sid sighed. "I told her that. He'll have him out in a jiffy." He glanced over his shoulder once more. "Besides they got nothing on him. Just talk I reckon. It's a shame though. They seem to suit each other and he's gotten more confident since she's taken him under her wing." He looked into Ruby's eyes. "Most times all a man needs is a good woman to set him straight."
"You got that right, Sid. Gus is the perfect example." Ruby rolled her eyes and elbowed Gus. "Heaven knows where you'd be right now if it wasn't for me."
The bell on the door rang. Ruby looked up to see a young woman come in and sit at one of the booths. She waited to see if Annie was going to serve her but she hadn't seemed to notice the noise of the bell or the woman sit down. Ruby was about to shove Gus aside but Sid put his hand on hers.
"Leave it a bit. Annie needs to be busy so let her deal with it."
"But she hasn't moved."
"Let's just give her a minute." Gus grinned and topped up the coffees. "Believe me this could be what she needs to snap her back to being the Annie we know."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Roobs..." Gus chuckled and shook his head. "Don't you recognise her? Take a good look."
Ruby frowned and peered at the girl. "Oh..."
Poor Annie must be beside herself :(
