Seventy-Eight
What was wrong with the place? Detective Day wondered if his office had as many weirdos as Sykes. Maybe he'd been living in a box with the rest of the world rolling by unnoticed.
When this case was finished, he'd have to look more closely at the people he worked with. He caught Tim's eye as Bill Peters signed the legal form and shoved it across the desk.
"I'm a very busy man. I didn't see Rohan Wayland hit her but I know he did. Then he shoved her down the stairs." Bill looked down his regal nose at them. "Can I go now?"
"Not yet, Mister Peters." David paused. Could he call this man Bill? Did he even want to play the, I'm your mate so tell me everything, game? After all, they had all the evidence they needed to charge him with interfering in defence force drug testing. The man was going to lose his job and his career but the way he looked at them you'd think they were the scum.
"Bill. Can I call you Bill?"
"If you must." Bill sniffed. "I haven't got all day. I've already given you a statement. Rohan Wayland threatened to break her neck and that's exactly what he did. Bitch deserved it but, who am I to judge."
"Why do you say that, Bill?" David clasped his hands together.
"Well... she harassed him no end. Though I do have an understanding of why she did it. Sally and I are in a different league, Mister Day." Bill pursed his lips together and flicked his eyelids.
"Detective. It's Detective Day not Mister."
Bill huffed. "Well, Detective, surely you can tell what Rohan Wayland is like. I've never met a weaker man in my whole life. How the hell he ever got through university and even got a job at Sykes is beyond me. Sally could see that. She treated him with the contempt he deserved."
Should he let the man continue to ramble in the hope some valuable piece of information might spew out of his mouth or shut the creep down now. Mm... let him ramble, but in the direction, you want, David. "Bill. How long had you and Sally Parks been in a relationship?"
"Wha... wha... what we weren't in a relationship." Bill nodded while denying it. He folded his arms across his chest.
Yep, that got him. Body language. A wonderful thing. "We have it on good authority you were having a relationship with Sally Parks. To put it bluntly, Bill, you were fucking Sally Parks in the lady's toilets."
"I... we... ah..."
"Please don't lie to us, Bill. Someone in, your league, really shouldn't lower your standards with a lie. That could put you in the, same league, as Rohan Wayland and you wouldn't want that now, would you?"
"Well. Yes. Yes, Detective." Bill hung his head a little. "Sally and I were having a relationship. She was insatiable and it was her idea to enjoy each other on occasion in the lady's toilets." He cleared his throat and poised his head on his shoulders. "The relationship ended weeks before she died."
"Then why were you arguing with her over her wanting to have sex with Rohan Wayland on the day she died." David looked from Bill to his paperwork and back again. "You threatened to kill her if she was fucking Wayland too." He tapped his finger on the notes. "I have it all here. We have a witness."
"How? How could you have a witness? There was no one in the toilets." Bill clamped his mouth shut and looked at the skinny pimple faced solicitor who was sitting beside him. "Do I have to answer this?"
Hammel quickly looked from Bill's face to David's and back again. "Well... ah... Mr. Peters. You don't have to but, I think you've already said enough to confirm you were in the lady's toilets having an argument with Miss Parks. The police witness and evidence are legitimate and you are now on tape. I would advise you be as helpful as you can in view of your circumstance."
"What circumstance?" Bill sniffed again and looked down his nose. "Do you even know what you're doing? Have you even got a degree?" He turned back to the detectives. "I'm not saying anything more."
"How about I tell you what I know and what I think happened." David smirked. "You were in a relationship with Sally Parks. She lost interest in you and took an interest in Rohan Wayland instead. A man you hate and despise because... well... let's face it. He's better at his job than you are."
"Now hang on! He's an...."
David held up his hand. "I haven't finished yet, Bill. After all, it wasn't Rohan Wayland who was replacing defence force drug tests with his urine. It was you."
"That's a li..."
"No. No. Bill. I haven't finished. Sally Parks knew you were doing this and threatened to expose you because she wanted a cut of the money. You argued with her in the toilets. Threatened to kill her and decided that was a good idea. You fixed the CTV in the garage and waited until she came to the door. You then hit her on the head with the Base Sledge Microtome you'd taken earlier. Then you pushed her down the stairs." David smiled. "How am I going so far, Bill?"
"This is absurd! You have no evidence to prove any of this." Bill straightened in his chair and held his nose in the air.
David sighed. "You're already in a lot of trouble, Mr. Peters. And I mean a lot of trouble so I suggest you confess right now."
"I didn't kill Sally Parks!"
Detective Day jerked his head at the officer standing by the door. "You can book him now for the drug test scam."
Bill struggled as the officer snapped the handcuffs on. "She was a fucking bitch and deserves to be dead!"
Did he just arrest Bill for Sally's murder??
So glad Bill has been found out and going to be punished for swapping urine samples. No fancy Italian suits for him anymore.
