Chapter Four
Look out pirates, I got my bow back. I was ready for combat, and to avenge my brother's deaths. We were only supposed to visit the Prince of Apharidge, he was supposed to be getting married, and somehow he ended up being both of my brother's best friend. Now, they're dead, and I took it quite hard the other day. I looked over to Eric, who played with his shortsword and a shield he had picked up. I also grabbed a sword as well, and I followed Eric back up the stairs; and Avangeline followed behind me. I offered that she should keep watch behind us as we ascend up the stairs. Eric was the first to see what was going on, I couldn't see anything. Except for a peculiar red flash of light that ignited across the dark and grey sky.
"Chronic is showing off his magic alright, playing with his balls of fire in his hands. More crew have showed up, it seems to be most of them. I think if you could pick them off with your bow, we can get the others from the other side of the boat. I nodded.
"I'll go around, I think I saw some barrels that I could climb on to get to the roof of the stairs."
"That's good." Eric replied subtly and escorted us back down the stairs. I heard footsteps coming from the right through the pass and noticed a small shadow of a crew man or woman, presumably male, amble across the clearing. Footstep after footstep until we couldn't hear it anymore. Eric peeked over again, and waved his hand for me to go and get ready. I nodded and hurried my way across over to the barrels. The roof appeared to be easy enough to climb without the barrels, and I pushed my shortbow on top of the roof, and took off my quiver and repeated the process. I clasped onto the edge, and struggled a little as I climbed on top of the roof. The roof felt a little flimsy, perhaps this was why no one bothered to come up here? Or maybe they just didn't feel like it, but as I pulled myself over the edge and onto the rooftop of the staircase. Fortunately, as I crawled over, there were a few large crates that supported my cover, so the crew wouldn't suspect anything.
"You fellas seem to be getting bored; I could show you a card trick. I know one of you have a deck of cards." Chronic advertised, and pointed towards to one of the men who was smoking a cigar. It was probably his last minute cigar before the thunderstorm arrived. Chronic winked, it might have had been my imagination, but I was sur I saw him blink. He did a few card tricks and some of them had even surprised me. I'm not interested in card tricks, but I noticed that Eric had gathered a few more followers. I wondered how he had managed to do better than I did. Perhaps he was some sort of salesperson. Or something like that? Ah, it didn't really matter, I guess. I was still crouching behind one of the crates, it was tempting to peek in one, but I didn't want to give my whereabouts away, not right now.
I signaled for him to wait and I peeked back over the crates again. This definitely reminded me of hide and seek, but more serious. Almost deadly, or pretty much deadly. I carefully watched Chronic as he distracted the crew with his magic. The Wizard emphasized on the word "now" as he was going to explain how he was going to control the weather. He gestured his head, indirectly towards me. I slouched again, and signaled for Eric and Avangeline to engage. I withdrew a arrow and nocked it into the string and ascended from where I was. I aimed my arrow at one of the men, and picked one off, and he fell forward flat on his face. With a loud thump, I had gathered the attention of the pirates, and Chronic threw a couple of the playing cards into the necks of three men. They fell to their knees and landed on their faces as well. The other remaining pirates began yelling commands and dispersed into groups and withdrew their blades while some of Erics men had engaged. There was a clash among pirates and the enslaved, and the storm was still raging; and it was getting ever so closer.
I shot a few more arrows, one of them landed in the water, but I've taken a few guys out with my bow. Chronic was dancing with his fire balls, I was amazed at how long this clash was going on for. Minutes passed by and the first stage of a storm was brewing and I could feel the drops soak into my body and hair as we fought. Sweat was mixed in and so was hard work. I saw a few of the enslaved fall down as well during battle. It wasn't long until the Captain of the ship had came out. It's probably been a couple of hours since he had shown up. "Captain James." I smiled, the rain changed speeds and I jumped from the rooftop of the staircase. He of course didn't hear me, or see me. Though, I doubted that he didn't see me. I was the only one with the bow, and he was the one who killed my brothers. It was time to get my revenge and I was going to have it. No matter how long it would take me, I'd still get it. I walked around the corner and ducked as soon as a blade came whirling towards my head. It struck the wall beside me and I pulled it out, seeing how I might need it later. Chronic used the water to his advantage too, and pulled some of the fallen into the sea with his magic. Chronic seemed too busy to notice the captain. He was looking all around, and he stood waiting by the wheel. I figured, if I could get there, I could attack him, and... kill him.
