Chapter Thirty

Woodwork ended and I packed up the project I was working on. It was a wooden acoustic speaker, and after seven weeks I was finally able to make the channels. Next lesson at least. But that's beside the point. I could now find my way to the Phys Ed Office to have a chat with Gladiare.

It wasn't far. The Work Building, as it had been called, was situated in between the PEB and the student parking lot. I'd probably be able to get to science on time, and if I didn't, I could get him to write a note or wag. Physics wasn't important anyway.

I walked down the stairs and across the netball court quickly so that I could talk to him before class. I wasn't sure if he had one, and I didn't want to pull him aside from that. The gym wasn't too full, just a few students walking through to get to the change rooms, so I could probably find Gladiare. I knocked on the office door, and a woman answered with a smile.

"Hello deary," she greeted, "what brings you here?"

"I would like to speak with Mr Gladiare," I said.

Gladiare walked out, and nodded to the other teacher, gesturing for her to leave. Gladiare gave me a bored expression.

"What do you want?" He asked in a hushed voice.

"Who are the other's?" I asked.

Gladiare sighed, before leaving and walking past me. I followed him into the gym, and he stood in a corner I hadn't noticed before.

"People are gonna think you're a paedophile," I stated.

Gladiare waved me off. "Whatever, just – come again?"

"Who are the other's?" I repeated.

"The other what's?" Gladiare stood straighter.

"The other immortal children like me?" I elaborated. "I met Flare in the weird Dreamscape, and there's apparently a boy there somewhere. Who are the other's?"

Gladiare sighed. "I can't tell you that."

"Why—"

"I can give you the names of their Protector's though," Gladiare added.

"Go on then," I sighed in annoyance.

"There's Dione, Prometheus, Mammon, Asteria, and Mor-Rioghain," Gladiare listed.

The names Mammon and Prometheus sounded familiar for completely different reasons. Mammon was the name of a demon, loosely it translated to money and represented greed, one of the seven sins. Prometheus was someone from Greek Mythology, somehow relating to fire. Was he a God or a hero?

"Do you all work at schools, or is that just some of you?" I asked.

"Very few of us," Gladiare admitted. "Sometimes we don't even work at the school our pupils attend."

I nodded, praying that Dione Boroong's pupil went here so that I could at least narrow down the searching area.

"I'm going to assume it's not strictly Australia that's dealing with this," I said.

Gladiare shrugged. "Depends on how specific you get. Creatures like your Mother often choose to stay in close proximity to one another."

I nodded. "So, the other's like me are somewhere in Perth?"

Gladiare nodded.

"Brilliant," I sighed, "that narrows it down to about sixty-five-hundred kilometres squared. And then we add surrounding towns to get God knows how much space."

"Yeah," Gladiare nodded. "Well, you have fun with that."

"Wait," I stopped him. "I was fighting a Daoshou earlier, and it said something."

Gladiare's expression grew grim. "I let one slip through?"

"Excuse me?" I raised an eyebrow.

"There's always a crowd of monsters trying to kill you," Gladiare explained as though this was the most normal thing ever, "as your Protector, it's my job to make sure they don't kill you."

"How many were there?" I asked.

"A lot," Gladiare groaned. "You're popular."

"Oh yay," I grumbled. "Maybe they can teach me everything you won't."

"Ha-ha," Gladiare deadpanned. "Anyway, after a few weeks monsters get more restless. I thought I caught all of them this morning."

"Well, anyway," I went back to my previous thought, "the Daoshou said something, and I think it's a line from this prophecy people keep talking about."

"What did it say?" Gladiare asked, looking serious.

"One each from Heaven and Hell must rise," I recited, "and then it said that by saving Zak, I was delaying the inevitable."

Gladiare had a hard to read expression on his face, and clouded over all emotions, trying not to give it away.

"It is a line," Gladiare nodded. "We've been trying to work out who it was referring to, and it looks like we've found one of them."

"What does it mean?" I asked. "Is Zak going to Heaven or...?"

Gladiare didn't meet my gaze.

"He'll be going to Hell, won't he?" I asked, feeling a pit form in my stomach at the thought of Zak facing eternal damnation. Zak didn't deserve that, not after everything he'd done for me.

"There are other lines that explain it better," Gladiare said, "but I think you'll have to figure it out. This isn't even the first line of Kassandra's Prophecy."

"I can't ask for hints," I started, "can I?"

Gladiare shook his head. "It is in the hands of the Fates from here."

I gulped at how he spoke about the Fates. Like they were living entities. I knew in some forms of religion and mythology there were people or creatures in charge of how things went in the world, but I didn't know much about any of them. Other than God of course.

But that didn't matter. I hoped the stories of these other Protector's might help me find the other's. I had a good guess of who Prometheus was protecting, being that I knew a certain redhead whose home had burnt down in a bushfire, but I had no idea about the others. Mammon was relative to greed, and a soulless creature from Hell, so I didn't know what that said about who he was protecting. Honestly, I wasn't sure if I wanted to know.

I tried to think of someone for the other's. Dione was either protecting someone at this school, or someone nearby. By my luck, they probably didn't go to this school. Mor – Morri – Morrigan? – was God knows what, I'd have to do some research there. Maybe ask Ciara or go to the library. Asteria sounded familiar to a degree, but I had no clue where from. All in all, research was a must.

"Righto, well," I sighed, "what do the colours and symbols mean?"

Gladiare shook his head. "That's not for me to explain. You're smart, you'll figure it out."

I huffed. I think he was overestimating my abilities to figure out what colours and symbols I'd never seen before meant. I didn't even know colours could have meanings until this point in my life, and I had never seen the symbols before as I stated. I doubted myself very much.

"I'm sorry I can't be of more assistance," Gladiare pat my shoulder, "but you'll figure it out. Now off you pop, young girl! You have a class to get to, and I have a class to teach."

Gladiare walked away before I could complain about being called young girl. It was probably immature, but I was fifteen and did not appreciate it.

I let out a breath and decided to go to class. For some reason, it felt like some exterior force was telling me I would want to be there for this class. As if something important was going to happen. I didn't see how it would, considering this was science and Farsnic hadn't tried to bother me since Tuesday. But hey, maybe one of the eshay's would do something funny.

I stood outside the science classroom with my book, planner, and pencil case, waiting near the back for Farsnic to appear.

"Hey," Fundo greeted. "I heard we're getting two of new students in our class."

I shrugged. "Let's hope they're at least hot."

"I'm in a steady relationship," Fundo stated. "Don't need the eye candy."

"Fair enough."

I thought back to home room. We'd had some boy named Ethan join our class, and I'm pretty sure he befriended the video game nerds in the second row. I wasn't going to go looking for the new students, because they were probably getting enough attention. Being the new student wasn't fun.

Mr Farsnic came out with his goofy grin, hiding his true terribleness, as always. The class got into two lines, and we were let inside after a few seconds. I made sure to give Farsnic a cold glare as I walked past him, and he looked away. That guy deserved worse, but I wasn't about to murder him and let myself be handed over to the government. I'm not that stupid.

I sat down in my seat near the back of the class, and Connor seemed to shy away slightly. Good, I thought, less likely to annoy the Hell out of me.

I tapped my fingers on the table and considered telling Farsnic I was needed in Student Services, and then sneaking off to the library. God, I was wagging to read? What has the world done to me?

I shook my head and started writing in the back of my book. I wrote down the six names I needed to research, and a list of major suburbs in Perth. I also put down a note to look for any miracle survivals and look up something about a baby that turned out to be alive after a scheduled still birth procedure. Yeah, I still remembered that story Jade told me.

It was a lot, but hopefully I could find some books and use the library computers. I just needed an excuse to leave the class.

"Ms Fickle!" I was pulled from my thoughts and my head shot up to see Farsnic had been calling the roll.

"Here," I said, feeling my face heat up.

There was a murmured laugh, and I rolled my eyes.

"I actu—"

"Mr Funder," Farsnic called.

"Alive and well," Fundo pointed finger guns at Farsnic.

Farsnic continued down the roll and I felt anger rise at how he didn't let me explain how I was needed at Student Services. It was a total lie, and I was only saying it so that I could get away with wagging, but it was still very rude.

Farsnic continued down the roll, and the only new name I noticed immediately was the surname, Joyce. It belonged to a kid with long brown hair, and I could tell they were male. And based on the black embroidery on his shirt saying Football, I was going to take a wild guess and say they were one of the footyfucks.

I listened to the rest of the roll, because now that I'd found out who the boys were, I was curious to know what the girls name was. But even so, I looked back down at my page to see if I could figure anything out about the names. At the time, I wasn't even entirely sure I'd spelt the names right, but it would have to do.

The only thing I could think of for Asteria were Aster flowers, known to be a symbol of intelligence. Dione was almost a complete blank except for sounding Greek. Morrigan was a strange one, because words like post-mortem meant after death, so maybe they had a connection to death? Prometheus definitely had something to do with fire, I just didn't know what. So, all in all, I had no idea what I was trying to do research on.

I started wondering if maybe they were all Kentauros like Gladiare but shut that thought down immediately. Mammon was a demon, so clearly, they weren't all the same creatures. Maybe some of them were demons? I honestly had no idea.

"Worthy?" I heard Farsnic say, making my head shoot up.

A figure with dark red hair near the front of the class put their hand up. "It's Worthe."

They turned to look back at me and my eyes widened into saucers. She looked a little different, but it was uncanny. Her freckles were a normal colour, the orange gemstone on her head was gone, and her eyes were a vibrant blue rather than orange, but it was her.

Flare Worthe.
