Antonio's Ceremony (1)
Mirabel closed the door behind her and sauntered towards the bed inside the nursery (or, her room, per se). She sits on the bed and sits there for a minute to collect her thoughts. She did pick up the sound of Félix calling out her little primo's name, which reminded her of the gift inside of her drawer.
Pulling it open, she grabbed a blue box with little colorful doodles and scribbles on it with a yarn bow. She sighed, waving the box around slightly.
"Everyone's looking for you.." she said aloud.
There was silence, so Mirabel took the gift by the loops and brought it down to the bottom of the bed, speaking again.
"This present will self-destruct if you don't take it in three, two... one...Oh-!"
And the present was taken into the darkness under the bed by a mysterious someone. Mirabel chuckled, climbing on the ground and under the bed where we see a little boy with tight curls with a white suit, but a frown plastered on his adorable face. Mirabel scooted next to him and rested her head in her hand.
"Nervous?" she asked the boy.
He didn't respond, only buried his face in his arms and stared at the floor. Mirabel caught this and tried to reassure him.
"You have nothing to worry about. You're gonna get your gift, open your door, and it's gonna be the coolest ever. I know it."
The boy finally looked at Mirabel with an anxious expression. "What if it doesn't work?"
"Well, in that impossible scenario, you'd stay here in the nursery, with me." She replied. "Forever... and I'd get you all to myself." She goes to tickle him, which makes him giggle for a moment before his frown returns. He thinks about the time when the family talked about the time when Mirabel's door faded from Casita. He felt really bad for her that time and tried to make Mirabel feel better about it, but also couldn't help but feel... worried, afraid that... what if his door were to do that too? What if his big brother was the end of the magic line, the end of the miracle that burned so bright to keep everyone else's gifts alive. What if he was the last one?
"I wish you could have a door..."
That statement alone made her smile falter a bit. Yeah, she too wished she had a door, then she wouldn't have to feel like an outcast to the rest of her family, so then she would be considered useful for once.
But she couldn't let Antonio see that.
"You know what?" She started. "You don't have to worry about me... 'cause I got an amazing family and an amazing house." She paused for a moment to place her hand on his arm. "And an amazing you." Antonio couldn't help but smile at her words.
"And seeing you get your special gift and your door, that's gonna make me more happy than anything... but alas, I am gonna miss having the world's best roomie... besides your hermano... haha." Mirabel pulled the gift in front of him and pursed her lips towards it. Antonio pulled the yarned bow off and the top, and with a gasp, took out a stuffed animal of what looked to be a jaguar. The stitching where it had attached certain limbs and even the face was very colorful. Blues, pinks, and purple in different places. It was a very creative way to stitch an animal.
"I know you're an animal guy, and I made this so... when you move into your cool, new room, you always have something to snuggle with."
Antonio's smile grew wider at the gift. He laid his head on her shoulder, leaving the two in comfortable silence, but only for a moment before the floorboards lifted and shook under them; a clock jumping towards them reminded them of the ceremony, then rolled away.
"Alright, homebrecito, you ready?"
He nods, which makes Mirabel begin to move but couldn't help but pull Antonio into a quick, tight embrace. They both erupted into giggles, and yet again, the floors began to roll under them, which I suppose was Casita's way of telling them to hurry up and go downstairs already.
"Okay, okay! We're going! Hahaha- OW! Ow!"
——————————-
The time has come for the beginning of the ceremony for your amiga's primo, a ceremony that comes every time a Madrigal turns the age of five; Tasked with helping the community with their gifts.
You put on your finest clothing for tonight. Looking in the mirror, you stare at your reflection. You tugged at the rim of your collar. This was one of the outfits bought from a store in this little town, a beautiful attire with huge ruffles littered everywhere on your clothes. You brushed your shoulders and stepped away from the mirror to grab your book full of sketches. You traced the outer rim of the book. You decided you weren't gonna do much at the ceremony but sketch a few things and whatnot, but you wondered how the ceremony was gonna go.
You heard your parents call your name from downstairs which made you hurry out of your room and down the stairs. You saw your parents and looked down at the floor, but you could feel their smiles radiating in front of you. You heard your father's footsteps sound towards you and a hand on your head.
"Well, I'll be. You actually dressed up for an occasion."
You pursed your lips. "Well, why not...? Gotta make a good first impression."
"Right, right, well, let's go."
You and your family step out of your house. A crowd of people walking up the hill made you gaze above. The Madrigal house shone so brightly in the night, in fact, probably the brightest house in this town, which was very pretty. Perhaps you would sketch that house later.
Upon arriving at the home, you got to see the house lit up right up close. It was even prettier closer up. You forgot about the sparkler in your hand until you felt a spark hit your face, causing you to yelp and wince at the slight sting of pain.
You and your family saunter to the door and see Luisa picking up people, carts, and donkeys. The donkeys were placed inside a pen while the carts sat next to it. Upon walking further, you see that same boy.
"Camilo.." you murmured.
He was smiling and shaking the hands of the people going inside the home and transforming into them. One person after the other, you and your family soon came up and he greeted your siblings first.
"¡Ahaha, señorito, señorita, hola!" He turns into them and gives them fist bumps, then he turns to your parents and greets them with higher honorifics while also turning into them, and then came to you.
"Hola, seño-"
"No honorifics, please.." You interrupted but realized you did so in a rude way so you apologized. "Ah- sorry, I just... don't like when people address me as such."
"Oh- lo siento, what shall I call you then?"
You told him your name, to which his eyes widened. "Oh, I've never heard a name like yours. Very nice name. Uh, my prima speaks highly of you, so- aha- oh, of course, sorry for holding you up!" He turned into you and pulled you into a quick hug before letting go and tried shaking both of your hands but noticed your book. He still held your hands and smiled.
You blinked. You hadn't noticed it before, but now you got to look at his face up close. He had a bunch of little freckles speckled on his face. The way his curly hair bounced when he turned and shook his head. The way his lips curled into a smile, surely made your heart flutter... more than you thought it did... until he turned into you of course.
Before you gazed too strongly, your eyes darted to the floor and you nod at Camilo. "Uh, yeah... yeah, uh--thank-thank you, I will."
You quickly walk past him and try to find your parents and siblings but didn't see them anywhere. Perhaps they went up ahead, but exactly where were they?
Inside the house you went to, the inside was even better. The flowers littered everywhere, people dancing and chatting. It was absolutely amazing. Looking to your right, you saw a grill and other foods; casita moving the grill side to side as the food cooked. You looked surprised to see townspeople cooking in their house. Maybe they were very open with their house and stuff, or something.
Near a fountain and some stares, you saw Isabela dancing with kids and throwing flowers into the air. She looked very pretty doing so. Graceful and elegant, but lively and happy.
Honestly, the place was beautiful, you had no more words, and social interaction lingered in your mind but you couldn't bring yourself to speak to anyone, so you find a wall or a corner to stand peacefully by to draw something.
Opening your book and flipping the pages, you stop at a blank page and grab your pencil to begin drawing. You jumped in head first, letting your mind guide your hand through the process. First a circle, a messily drawn circle. So a person. A jaw, an ear, a neck. A rounded rectangle for the upper body, but it seemed to stop there. You worked on the facial features next. Big, round eyes, a big nose, a mouth with a small upper lip, Small dots speckled across the cheeks and nose, and a bigger bottom lip that stretches wide. Next was the hair. You pressed your lips together to form a line; your pencil tapped against your mouth as you were deep in thought. How to draw the hair?
Then the idea came into your head.
A few inches above the head, your pencil began doing its thing. Swirls and twirls, the lead loops and leaps across the paper, forming a round, curly textured shape.
Soon enough, your picture became clear and you paused for a brief moment to look at who you were drawing. The familiar grin, the bouncy curls, and the many freckles on their face. You wrote their name above their head.
Camilo.
It surprised you. You had only met him once and you were already sketching out his lovely features. Though, you hadn't thought anything of it.
The sound of feet tramping across tile floors alerted you, making you glance up and see crowds of people gathering at the grand staircase in the middle of the house. You wondered what was happening, so you stood from your spot and walked towards the crowd. Trying your way to the front, you saw Abuela at the bottom and Félix and Pepa at the very top with a glowing door that swirled but with no clear image, which might be the little kid's door.
You found yourself next to a taller woman with a middle bun and a skinny red tie holding it in place. You recognized who she was albeit her name sat at the tip of your tongue, but you also noticed Camilo's bouncy hair and yellow... thing draped across his body. They didn't seem to notice you walk up, which was good for you, nit some part of you wanted to speak to him again, but before you could even think to speak, the woman on the stairs spoke.
"Fifty years ago, in our darkest moment, this candle blessed us with a miracle. And the greatest honor of our family has been to use our blessings to serve this beloved community."
'So these guys kind of slave away but willingly for these people, huh?' You thought with a scoff.
"Tonight, we come together once more as another steps into the light to make us proud."
The curtains behind you open, revealing a little boy in a white suit. That must have been Mirabel's little cousin, but his name couldn't come to mind. He looked adorable though, so much so, you'd wish he was your little cousin.
The crowd erupted into cheers and claps. When everyone waited for him to move, he... didn't. He just stood there. He looked scared. You wouldn't blame him. If you had to walk across something with thousands of faces watching you, you'd be afraid too. It was when he looked to his right at something, or rather, someone, but you couldn't make out who it was as they were hidden behind the wall where the curtain hung. He stretched his hand out as if to reach towards them. There the person revealed themself. The familiar green glasses and dark brown curly hair, the multi-colored blue dress with thousands of cute embroidery stitched on it.
Mirabel came from behind the wall and held the boy's hand. This left people shocked as the murmurs and whispers sounded from all around you. She looked around at everyone with a nervous expression, then saw you and her lips curled upwards slightly. She turned back to the boy and shook his hand.
"Come on, let's get you to your door."
He hugged her arm and the two began to walk down the tiled walkway. Slow and steady, it made you gaze confoundedly at them. It reminded you of a wedding, but it also didn't. It had a different vibe to it.
Up the stairs, to the very top, the little guy reached the candle. Mirabel stood with his parents (assumingly) and watched Abuela speak with Antonio about the candle, about his soon-to-be gift. Even if the
"Will you use your gift to honor our miracle? Will you serve this community and strengthen our home?"
The boy let go of the candle and walked towards the glowing door. His hand reached the knob; everyone leaned in, anticipating rising by the minute. At first, you didn't think it was going to work when the door didn't change almost immediately, but then the knob glowed, the door shone bright, and the candle burned brighter than ever. Although it glowed brightly, nothing appeared just yet, until a bird flew down onto the little guy's arm. He turned and stared with his mouth agape. The bird squawked, looking into his eyes, then the boy spoke.
"Uh-huh, uh-huh! I understand you!"
The bird jumped and landed on his other arm, flapping and squawking at him again. He looked surprised for a minute but then said, "Of course they can come!"
The toucan squawked loudly yet again and before you knew it, flocks of birds and different animals began swarming inside. You felt one run across your feet and you stumbled back, startled, but unbeknownst to the person behind you.
"Woah!" Their voice said as they grabbed your upper arms before you both could stumble. You jolted at the sudden touch and quickly turned to see Camilo with a shocked expression. Embarrassed, you felt your cheeks fire ablaze and you rip yourself from his grip, apologizing immediately.
"I'm sorry- sorry, I'm sorry, I didn't-- the animals just--"
"Hey, hey, cálmate, cálmate, it's fine. I'd be surprised too if an animal just ran across my feet-- oh hey, wait, you're se- my prima's new friend!"
"Y...eah... uh, yeah- mhm, hey, how about we look at the little guy up there, hm?"
You turn your attention back to the animal guy and you saw his door finally form. The top read 'Antonio' and a picture of him with animals. A simplified version, yet still just as adorable as him.
"We have a new gift!" Abuela exclaimed.
The crowd erupted into loud cheers and claps once again. You felt a hand on your shoulder; you found it to be Camilo again, who cheered very loudly for the boy. You couldn't help but smile at him too and clap with everyone else.
Antonio then turned back to his door and turned the knob, opening the door to his new room. Everyone else began shuffling up the stairs, but you were surprised when Camilo grabbed your arm and told you to follow him. You both walked through the crowd and up the stairs to Antonio's room. He found Mirabel as well and took her hand too, so both you and Mirabel were being pulled by the shapeshifter into the room. When you went inside, you were left astounded at how ginormous and absolutely magnificent it appeared. It was like... a real jungle. Just what was this place? Is this what your parents meant when they said this place was truly magical?
Camilo let out a gasp. "Woah... this place-"
"-is absolutely-" Mirabel's mouth fell agape.
"...amazing." You finished the sentence.
He let go of the both of you and you three stood to take in the mesmerizing scenery. It felt so... real, but looked so... you couldn't believe it, there was no way this was Antonio's room. Is this what all the Madrigal's rooms looked like?
"Mi little hermano... has such a cool room! God, I... wow." Camilo shook his head.
"Well, that's gift bearers for you." Mirabel crossed her arms and glanced at you.
Suddenly, a large jaguar headed towards Antonio, and with a big grin on his face, the jaguar threw him into the air and onto his back, then he road on its back on the logs towards the big three that sat in the middle. You heard a man shout his name and something in Spanish, which you knew, but kept watching the scene go down. Antonio road free, like a bird, in a sense. Up in the air, under the waterfall; he looked like he was having so much fun.
After the fun little ride, he came back to everyone on that jaguar. He slid off and Pepa immediately went to hug him. Camilo looked at Dolores, Mirabel, and even you, in approval. Antonio was so adorable, you wanted to hug him too.
Abuela crouched down and cupped his face, smiling sweetly at him. "I knew you could do it! A gift just as special as you."
The words stung Mirabel's heart like a needle piercing through her skin. Her smile faltered once again.
You and Camilo just stood there gazing at Antonio and pondering about his gift. So much so, you hadn't noticed her step back behind them.
"We need a picture!" Abuela exclaimed. "Everyone! Come, come, come!"
The Madrigals began to come together while someone brought a camera to place in front of them. You watched as they huddled together and shout out a phrase in Spanish before their picture was taken.
"La familia Madrigal!"
They all looked stunning under the flash of the camera, and for a moment, everything was great. The picture, Antonio's room, your two friends-
You blinked, looking behind you, only to see-- not the person you thought you'd see. "Wait, where's Mirabel?"
