Update #2 (08/11/17)
Hey again!
So, this will be very short, but hey, Azerbaijan just revealed their act for 2018, so I have to talk about it (and I have a rant to finnish. Please, laugh. Please).
So, Aisel. When I saw her name, I was like "WAIT WAIT WAIT THE 2009 ONE?" and then I realized that this Aisel is written with an i and not a y. (Let's all agree, it would be awesome if Aysel would come back someday right? :D)
I listend to "My Only" and the first thing I thought was "she has that Dana International voice!"
I actually kind of liked that song, it's jazzy, but not horrible, I hope she will have something similar for Eurovision (and maybe this time, she will write her own song, and not a bunch of Swedes! It's time for Azerbaijan to get independance and stop being a colony :') I mean, I have absolutely nothing about swedish songwriters, but this is Azerbaijan, not Sweden).
So, to recap a little, we have three singers revealed, three women, and two of them are in a more jazzy style, which is why I am rooting with Finland for the moment.
Speaking of which...
"But while things will be very different this year — UMK 2018 viewers will choose one of three songs performed by Saara Aalto — it won't be like this every year.
The broadcaster says that they are open to the national final being developed. One potential option may be to take inspiration from Melodifestivalen and have 50% established artists and 50% new artists."
First off, "It won't be like this every year". I really hope so, Yle, I really hope so...
Secondly, this idea of taking inspiration from Melfest might be a good idea if "Finnish viewers expect big stars in the competition", but let's be honnest, this kind of contests are not only here for entertainment. It can also be a great occasion for little artists to get more famous and even get an international fanbase, as these selections are watched by foreigners too. And I don't think that it's very interesting when you only have famous or quite famous artists (and usually, these famous artists are only famous in their country, so in the end it won't really change their fate in the ESC).
Thirdly, I thought that Yle recieved a bit more than 100 submissions. Well, it was over 300. that's even worse.
