ESC19 • Last NFs Part 1

Hey! There are my tops of the remaining national finals! :D I'll finish adding the remaining tops tomorrow ^^

— Finland: Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu

The three songs are hard to rank because they sooort of sound the same, but still, here's my attempt at making a top out of them:

3. Superman

I like the chorus especially, but I just wish the drop was longer and didn't stop so sharply. I know that the song can't last longer than three minutes, but some songs manage to have both a chorus and a drop within a three minutes threshold.

2. Release Me

This song is a bit too calm for my liking — in the sense that it takes a bit too much time to really develop. It also lacks a bit of melody in the chorus. However, it is overall more efficient than Superman. I also like the synth melody used in the background, it adds a multi-dimensional touch worth noticing.

1. Look Away

The music video for this one is by far the least interesting one. However, the lyrics in this one are the best of the three. I don't find the "look away"s repetitive, but I wish once more this track had a proper instrumental part. I also think that it ends a bit too abruptly. In addition, if they do send this one, I think that they'll need to act in an appropriate way, because if they don't they'll come across as somewhat hypocritical... The contest's in Israel, after all.

Overall, I like all of the songs to a certain extent. I like the fact that they don't sound too modern without sounding dated as well — the synths used somewhat remind me of the early 2010s, which is undoubtedly my favorite period when it comes to music. On a personal level, I'm also glad that we'll have an Armada song at Eurovision haha! There are two drawbacks that prevent me from fully liking the songs: the lack of a proper instrumental part, and the fact that these tracks could have had more trance elements to them, since Armada is a (supposedly) trance label and Darude, a trance producer. But well, I guess that something too "trancy" would have been off-putting for some so I guess it's better this way. I have no idea whether Finland will qualify or not this year, I guess it will all depend on the staging and "meme factor". Speaking of which, I'm afraid that the staging won't be creative enough/too static/cliché: expect some fake scratching and some random girl dancers trying to make the whole thing more lively... But well, they may always surprise us.

— Moldova: O Melodie Pentru Europa

I didn't really follow the selection, so I just listened to the top 10 that competes in the final.

10. Diana Brescan — Lies

It's a boring and forgettable song that brings absolutely nothing new to the table. Next!

9. Marcela Scripcaru — Meteor

Same as Lies, just... boring. I honestly didn't even notice that the chorus hit, and I had to search for it in the song before realizing that I've already heard it. Meh.

8. Anna Odobescu — Stay

For some reason, this song reminds me of Natalia Barbu's Fight, but in much worse. The melody is not too bad, but the song is still a bit boring.

7. Siaj — Olimp

The repetition of the "No" and "Oh" becomes very quickly boring and irritating. The instrumental is interesting, but add vocals to the mix and the final product becomes a mess :/

6. Aurel Chirtoacă — La Cinema

I have no idea why I like this song, but I do. It does sound dated and it is a bit boring, but there's something authentic in it that grabbed my attention. And, it is in Romanian, which is always a plus.

5. Maxim Zavidia — I Will Not Surrender

The only reason why this song is so high in my top is because of the intro, and the atmosphere it creates. The song itself brings nothing new to the table, but well, it's a weak selection with a lot of basic songs. I just wish they used the background voices a bit more though, since it's the only interesting part of the song. Well, the melody's not too bad, either.

4. Lemonique — GravitTy

Not a huge fan of this one, but I like the mix of what seems to be some kind of future bass and electric guitar. However, the melody fails to grab my attention long enough.

3. Vera Țurcanu — Cold

Drum and Bass! :D I like the instrumental, but the chorus lacks a special melody, which makes the whole song a bit boring and slightly overrated.

2. Che-MD feat. Elizaveta Ivasiuk — Sub Pământ

Ooooh these guys rock! Their song both reminds me of Eastern-European rock classics, and of early 2000s rock songs. And when I thought the song couldn't get any better, they add a violin to the mix! :D

1. Tinna Gi — Virus

This is the only song the I've heard before, and I already loved it the first time I heard it! The melody stays in your head, and I like the calm yet powerful atmosphere of the song, created by a simple backing track and somewhat distorted vocals. It would sound amazing on a Fifa soundtrack!

— Iceland: Söngvakeppnin

I am so hyped for this NF, you have no idea! :'D I'm also more than ready to get disappointed... Iceland, you have one job.

5. Hera Björk — Moving On

Je ne sais quoi... I know you have that special something... Oh... wait... I think... I think that this song doesn't! I think it's totally bland and forgettable! Yes! Come on Hera, you can do better than this :/

4. Kristina Skoubo Bærendsen — Mama Said

I mean, it's... funky. Um... upbeat, maybe? And, well, uh... it's kind of memorable (or maybe I have watched too many Söngva' tops?). If you find some other assets to this song, please, feel free to contact me.

3. Friðrik Ómar — Hvað Ef Ég Get Ekki Elskað?

At least I had fun typing this name! I once read a comment on YouTube that I found to be pretty accurate: "We all know the international jury will sabotage Hatari in the super final and Iceland will end up picking that blonde dude singing love on the brain 2.0 and I'm already mad "

2. Tara Mobee — Fighting For Love

Originally, this song's title was Betri Án Þín, which means "better without you". The English title is Fighting For Love. Girl. Make your mind up. Well, the song itself is not too bad, or rather, it would have been bad without the backing track. This, along with Hatrið Mun Sigra, is the only listenable song in the whole competition (okay, we may add Nú Og Hér, but... yeah, not a masterpiece). Also, it feels a bit weird to have in second position a song about fighting for love (what does that even mean though?), and in first position a song stating that hate will prevail and love will die. Lovely :)

1. Hatari — Hatrið Mun Sigra

Is that even a surprise (if we forget the fact that I just stated they were my first above... But hey, there was only one spot left so it was obvious who my first was, right?)? I absolutely want them to go to Eurovision, for two specific reasons. First off, the song is great. Can we take a second to appreciate the vocal quality of this entry? The contrast between verse and chorus and how harmonically they both come together in the end? The fact that the key change doesn't sound cliché and dated and predictable and actually surprises you at first listen? The drums? The overall production? The originality? The staging? The music video? I could go on and on. This song is daring, without being over-the-top daring — like Silvía Night's Congratulations (to which this song is way too often compared), which was just too much and came off as irritating. I said yesterday that Soldi would be very hard to beat. Well, if Hatari win Söngva' (and actually make it to the final show), then I'm afraid Mahmood will have to free the first spot in my top... And the second reason is that I simply want to see them troll everyone at Eurovision :'D The more interviews of them I see, the funnier it gets, honestly xD

— Norway: Melodi Grand Prix

10. Erlend Bratlan — Sing For You

The kind of boring ballad every selection has.

9. Carina Dahl — Hold Me Down

The same comment applies.

8. Anna-Lisa Kumoji — Holla

It has some potential, but it's just not for me. I'm not a huge fan of the over-the-top sassiness of the entry, either.

7. Hank von Hell — Fake It

At least it's memorable! I sort of like this one, but I think he could have been even more daring for better results.

6. Adrian Jørgensen — The Bubble

This song reminds me of another song, and when a song reminds you fo another song, then that song is not an original song (six times). It's actually not too bad, and I like the drum pattern used.

5. Chris Medina — We Try

This song is not original, but gosh I love that type of songs! I wish there was an instrumental part though...

4. Ingrid Berg Mehus — Feel

Hello, fairytale! It took me some time to get to like this entry, probably because of the lack of instruments, but I guess that it adds a very welcomed original touch.

3. KEiiNO — Spirit In The Sky

Hate me, hate me not, but I don't see why this song has so many fans. Sure, it is great, otherwise I wouldn't have put it third, but is it THAT amazingly originally good? Uh-uh. I like the fact that there is some Sami, and the end is great too. Just image they win MGP and Jon Henrik wins Melfest, I'm afraid they'd cancel each other :/

2. D'Sound — Mr. Unicorn

I. am. so. sick. of. unicorns. evryfuckingwhere. However, it is undeniable that this song is good. I love how it is both funky and modern, and I adore these electronic voices they added! Also, this song aaaaaalmost has an instrumental part, which only makes it better!

1. Mørland — En Livredd Mann

This song is pure production genius. It really takes to on a journey every time you listen to it, you have no idea how many mental images this song made me create. The lyrics are also beautifully penned, and they are in Norwegian (and Mørland comes from Sørlandet — the South of Norway — where people pronounce the letter "r" as a uvular trill (like in French or German) instead of an alveolar trill (like in Spanish or Russian), and I find this pronunciation much more beautiful). The melody is simply wonderful, and so is the orchestration. I hope that the staging will be worked enough to elevate this song to another, unreachable level. Best of luck <3

I'll finish tomorrow! :D
