ESC 2019 • Top 41
I have waited a bit to present you my top 41 so I could make some changes and be satisfied with it — and I know we still don't have the final versions of all of the songs, but I'll make an updated top 41 then — whiiiich contradicts what I've just said so let's just say that I wanted to share my actual top with you x'D
Nevermind the mess that I've just told you and let's move on to the top, shall we? :'D
41. LATVIA // Carousel — That Night
I start to like this song a little bit more, but still not enough for me to move it any higher. Latvia, bratany, you've sent pretty amazing entries over the years, and you were even my winners in 2000, but this time though, I'll have to put you last...
40. AUSTRALIA // Kate Miller-Heidke — Zero Gravity
I have to admit that I sort of like the "nothing holding me down" part. However, the rest is still annoying to me.
39. CROATIA // Roko — The Dream
I think there will be a revamp of this right? Right? RIGHT? Please. Revamp this. And don't mess up ;-;
38. MOLDOVA // Anna Odobescu — Stay
Dated, boring, bland, forgettable, they had better. Next!
37. MONTENEGRO // D-Moll — Heaven
Hey, this revamp was pretty cool! It added some depth and identity to the song, and it is much welcomed! Hell, I even start to like this one!
36. LITHUANIA // Jurijus — Run With The Lions
Yeaaaah... The more I listen to it the more it annoys me...
35. ISRAEL // Kobi Marimi — Home
I mean... He's got a great voice...
34. FRANCE // Bilal Hassani — Roi
I think this song could also benefit greatly from a revamp. I don't hate it, even if I ranked it quite low, and I think it was one of our best choices. Still glad that Tous Les Deux lost :'D
33. GEORGIA // Oto Nemsadze — Sul Tsin Iare
I have already told you that I like patriotic songs, right?! ^^
32. CZECH REPUBLIC // Lake Malawi — Friend Of A Friend
The revamp's not too bad! Not a huge fan of the social media-inspired video though, I hope they'll consider another theme for their staging...
31. ROMANIA // Ester Peony — On A Sunday
I am strangely addicted to this one. I mean, it has something special. I still don't know if I like or dislike it though, although I think it's more of the former.
30. BELARUS // Zena — Like It
UNDER WICKED SKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIES WE NEED TO HUMANIZE WE NEED TO HUMANIZE
Honestly it would have been top 15 for me...
29. MACEDONIA // Tamara Todevska — Proud
Beautiful and empowering, but I feel like I've heard it a thousand times already... Also, not only women suffer from sexism. However, no one ever talks about men...
28. SAN MARINO // Serhat — Say Na Na Na
Oh yeah, daddy's back :'D This song is much better than his first attempt, and I honestly wouldn't mind seeing this qualify.
27. GERMANY // S!STERS — Sister
I'm a bit late here, but I'm starting to jump onto the Aly Ryan train, and yes, she would have been a better option. A much better option...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
26. AUSTRIA // PÆNDA — Limits
I simply expected more...
25. IRELAND // Sarah McTernan — 22
Sorry not to have put this at 22 — come on, everybody has made this joke already...
24. SERBIA // Nevena Božović — Kruna
Beautiful, but still a tad boring. Deserves the final though.
23. DENMARK // Leonora — Love Is Forever
We need more of these positive songs in our lives AND YES, it's Amber the pessimist who says that.
22. BELGIUM // Eliot — Wake Up
One word? Overrated.
21. MALTA // Michela Pace — Chameleon
Guess what? Also overrated!
20. RUSSIA // Sergey Lazarev — Scream
Yeah... I expected more. I love the music video though, I hope they'll bring something in the spirit to the stage.
19. SPAIN // Miki — La Venda
WHY. DID. YOU. REVAMP. THIS?
18. UNITED KINGDOM // Michael Rice — Bigger Than Us
I start to get slowly bored from this song :/
17. ALBANIA // Jonida Maliqi — Ktheju Tokës
Not the biggest fan of that revamp, but well, it could have been worse...
16. CYPRUS // Tamta — Replay
Either I start to have enough of the song or I'm still pissed she was the first one to pass Hatari in the odds. Or maybe both.
15. NORWAY // KEiiNO — Spirit In The Sky
Still trying to figure out what's sooooo outstanding about this one. Sure, it's a great song, but a winner? Naaaah...
14. FINLAND // Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman — Look Away
I have to admit that I expected more from the Sandstorm king :/ At least something more trance oriented...
13. POLAND // Tulia — Pali Się (Fire Of Love)
Grower. Maybe you don't like that kind of singing, but I'm pretty used to it since it's very common in Eastern Europe. And I love how fresh they made it sound by adding some electric guitars! :D
12. HUNGARY // Joci Pápai — Az Én Apám
THEY ADDED VIOLIIIIIIIIIIIINS! :D
11. GREECE // Katrine Duska — Better Love
Kind of reminds me of M83's Midnight City, without copying the melody. Well done, Greece! :3
10. SLOVENIA // Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl — Sebi
Magically atmospheric!
9. ESTONIA // Victor Crone — Storm
Estonia rarely disappoints, and even if they may or may not have had better choices in Eesti Laul, I'm still happy about their decision! A great improvement since last year, definitely!
8. ARMENIA // Srbuk — Walking Out
I freaking love this song! I honestly didn't expect much from her so I was very pleasantly surprised!
7. PORTUGAL // Conan Osíris — Telemóveis
I don't think that it will keep on falling in my top, I actually think it'll go back to the top once the excitement of the new songs will fade away — that's how strong the song is.
6. SWEDEN // John Lundvik — Too Late For Love
Gospel vibes oh yeah! Arguably the best choice they had.
5. SWITZERLAND // Luca Hänni — She Got Me
Huge guilty pleasure :'D I usually don't like at all that kind of songs...
4. AZERBAIJAN // Chingiz — Truth
Oh my... I absolutely adore this song! It kind of gives me A-Trak vibes, and the chorus is so goddamn catchy! If I were to break up with someone someday I would definitely listen to that kind of songs instead of soapy ballads :'D
3. ITALY // Mahmood — Soldi
Probably the hardest choice here. I still adore Soldi, but... but... Arcade just stole my heart! So sorry Italy :/
2. THE NETHERLANDS // Duncan Laurence — Arcade
This is a masterpiece. I'm so glad I saw the premiere, and then rewatched it, and rewatched it, and rewatched it... It's so simple yet powerful and expressive... And live, it's even better, I even shed a little tear, and trust me, that doesn't happen very often.
1. ICELAND // Hatari — Hatrið Mun Sigra
However, no beautiful ballad nor rap-ish song nor uptempo banger has been able to beat this one. I think it's the first time that I have Iceland as a winner (maybe also in 1999), and GOD do they deserve the victory! Also, I don't know if you've read it, but there's a quite amazing article on the matter: https://dudepoints.wordpress.com/2019/03/04/why-hatari-is-the-song-we-need-not-just-the-song-we-deserve/
ANYWAYS! These are just my thoughts, my tastes, and I know that the real top won't look nowhere near like this one, but yeah :3 Next up: semi final tops + realistic top 41
