10- Jumping Heights Highschool
A high-pitched whistle that reverberated through the entire house awoke me. I propped myself onto my elbows and tried to make sense of it, but it quickly stopped. I rubbed my eyes and looked at the electronic clock on the bedside table, it flashed 6:00 AM. "Rose, hurry and change we're going to be late for school!" Jeriard's voice shouted at me. This is so too early for me. I fell back down onto the bed, burying my head in my pillow.
I groaned in irritation. I'm too lazy to get out of bed. Somehow, though, I managed to drag myself off of the bed and into the bathroom to freshen up. After ten minutes, I was satisfied with my school look. I had on black skinny jeans and a red shirt that was ripped near the stomach showing some skin.
I strutted out of my room and into the kitchen. I heard a howl from the back door and Raphael raked his eyes over my body. "Damn! She's hot!" Raphael cooed.
I immediately blushed and heard Jeriard growl behind me. I laughed at his jealousy. I hopped onto a stool and grabbed a pear. "What was that whistle sound I heard? It was so high-pitched that my ears almost didn't hear it, but it hurt nonetheless," I asked Jeriard. He was wearing a plain white shirt and jeans, his hair was messy as if he just got out of bed and he was wearing black sunglasses that covered his green eyes.
He gave me an apologetic smile. "Sorry about that, I was waking Raphy up with my wolf whistle. I didn't know you could hear it," he apologized, stealing my pear right when I was going to take a bite.
I crossed my arms in frustration as he smirked, taking a bite and handing the pear back to me. This boy really knew how to get on my nerves. I so wanted to throw the pear right at his head, but I was too hungry so that idea didn't appeal to me.
Jeriard pulled into a yellow stone building and showed a security guard his I.D. when he arrived at a huge wire gate. He parked his car near the entrance of the school, and sighed loudly as he turned the engine off. Raphael took this chance to jump out of the car and meet up with some of his friends, which he high-fived.
Jeriard walked out and opened the door for me so I stepped out into the cold breeze. I shivered. I think I should've worn something warmer. An arm wrapped around my waist and guided me toward the front entrance.
Once inside I noticed the very wide hallway and very high ceiling of the school, and the lockers that lined the walls. As we were walking I witnessed a bulky guy calling a sweet little boy rude names. "Hey nerd!" the bulky guy yelled at the small boy, slightly shoving him into the lockers. The boy's backpack fell to the ground on impact, but he quickly picked it up.
"Leave me alone," the boy mumbled. He tried walking away, but the bulky guy took hold of his leg and threw him into the locker. The little boy's head crashed into the locker.
I heard the boy whimper in pain, but he stood up nonetheless. "I'm not going to hurt you," the boy informed.
"It's not like you'd be able to, anyway. But, I certainly will hurt you," the bulky guy threatened punching the boy's stomach making him fall to the floor as he clutched it and coughed violently.
I saw the bulky guy lift his leg preparing to kick the boy in the face. Without thinking I pried myself away from Jeriard's arm and slammed the guy into the lockers. He left a dent and glared at me. Anger boiled up inside of me and I blinked away dryness that came to my eyes. "Look who comes to the nerd's rescue it's the new tramp. What are you going to do?" the bulky guy, which I knew was named Ronald, mocked me. He was going to get hurt if he doesn't run off soon.
He pushed me roughly making me fall on my back. The ground slightly began to tremble underneath me. This guy is getting on my nerves. The small boy, who was named Henry, helped me up and I kneed Ronald in his balls. He doubled-over in pain and I crashed my knee against his face. He collapsed to the floor with a thump, blood dripping from his now broken nose. "You just messed with the wrong girl, Ronald," I laughed coldly, "You've made it onto my list."
I spun myself around so that I was facing Henry and I gave him a wink before ambling myself toward the shock-stricken Jeriard. When I was at his side he instantly took my hand tightly in his as if I'd run off again. We proceeded to walk down the hall to where ever the principal's office was located. Jeriard leaned down to my ear and whispered, "What was that? Who was that kid? Be more careful." His mint breath was very irresistible.
I rolled my eyes. He is being a worry wart. "It was nothing, don't worry," I replied as he motioned me to enter a room that had "Principal's Office" hanging on the door. I was a little nervous to meet the principal and get my classes so I willed myself to take deep, slow breaths.
A young man with dark brown hair that slightly covered his eyes sat at the other side of a desk. He prompted us to sit. Once we were seated he spoke, locking eyes with me, his brown and green eyes firm, "Nice to meet you Miss Plumly. My name is James Herald, you will call me Mr. Herald and I'm the principal of Jumping Heights High school. Here is your schedule, look it over, tell me if everything seems to be in order." He slid a paper toward me and waited patiently for me to scan it. He's a very young principal.
I cautiously took it and read:
Student: Roselina Plumly
Grade: 11th
Class Hours:
1st hour: Chemistry Lab
2nd hour: Pre-Calculus 101
3rd hour: Physical Education Gym
Lunch Break
4th hour: History 201
5th hour: English 205
6th hour: Art 111
After checking my schedule twice, I finally nodded confirming that the schedule was correct to the principal. He showed us out and told us to have a nice day.
I guess I'm off to Chemistry now, but I don't know where the lab is. "Hey Jeriard, where's the lab?" I asked him, pointing at my schedule. He smiled, taking my hand and dragging me down the hall some more.
I learned that the lab was all the way at the end of the main hallway and by the time I got there my feet were aching. I also found out that Jeriard has the class nearby. The bell rang and Jeriard kissed the top of my head sending happiness tingles running through my body, then he walked to his class. I coughed when he left; it was suddenly becoming hard to breath. I stumbled through the door and coughed again making my head throb in response.
"Are you alright?" I heard a faint women's voice ask in concern. I turned to see an old lady with faded brown hair, small glasses sitting on her nose magnifying her blue eyes. This must be the teacher.
I covered my mouth and slightly coughed again. "Um... Yes," I managed to croak.
She gave me an excited smile. "Take a seat anywhere Miss Plumly I don't assign seats so it's first come first serve," she informed me with a satisfied giggle.
I thanked her and scurried to a seat in the back of the room, where hopefully no one will take any notice of me. To my dismay, Henry sat next to me and regarded me with a smirk. I felt uncomfortable under his intense gaze so I sunk down in my chair trying my best to hide. I know that's a dumb idea because he obviously still saw me, but it was worth a try.
"Thank you for helping me out earlier," the incredibly sexy voice of Henry rang into my ears. It wasn't as high pitched as I thought it would be. I nodded.
I took this chance to examine Henry more closely. He had pitch black hair that looked a lot like Jeriard's except Henry's was a lot longer, covering his ears and one of his eyes, too. His eyes were a very dark brown almost black color; he had some strong looking arms and legs as he wore shorts and a dark blue polo that hung loosely at his waist; as I already know he was very short coming up to my chest if we were standing. I hadn't noticed how long I was staring at him until he cleared his throat and chuckled at my awe-stricken expression. "Look front before Mrs. Kallar has to point you out," he warned, a slight smirk playing at his lips.
I looked down at my desk and waited an hour until the bell rang so I could go find Jeriard then my next class.
Jeriard was waiting for me near the door and he walked me to my math class, well our math class, we had the same hour and I was excited to spend a whole class with him. My eyes slightly burned as we made our way to the back of the class and sat next to each other.
I wanted to ask Jeriard about his pack, but I was interrupted by a poke on my shoulder. I turned to face Henry once again. "Are you stalking me?" I joked with a raised eyebrow.
He gave me a small smile. "No but we do have the same class together," he stated. He's really cute the way he's always smiling at me. I noticed Jeriard glaring at Henry, but I ignored him as Henry took the other empty seat next to me. "So how do you like Jumping Heights so far?"
I tapped my chin pretending to be in deep thought. "Well, it's not very welcoming, but you're a nice detail to it," I chuckled. He laughed and his eyes sparkled with amazement as if I were something so complex.
Throughout the class, I felt Jeriard glaring at Henry and Henry oblivious of his stares as I tried my best to listen to the homework assignment. The bell rang and I took Jeriard's hand so we can walk to P.E. together. I waved to Henry once I was near the door he quickly waved back.
The gym was on the other side of the school near the football field. The coach made me change into basketball shorts and a plain white T-shirt that I despised with all my heart. The shirt was too big on me so I grabbed the side of the shirt and tied it into a knot. It made the shirt tighter on me and didn't make me look as boyish.
Today was supposedly outdoor practice, I had no idea what that meant. I followed the group of girls that led me to the football field. The sun blinded me for about a minute and then something hit me in the middle of my shoulders. I fell onto the cold ground; dirt got into my mouth and it tasted so bad.
Who did that? I scanned my surroundings for any potential threat and there was a group of girls cackling their ass off. Anger boiled up inside my body and my eyes started to fog with dryness. I noticed a soccer ball sitting near my feet; damn they kicked a soccer ball at me.
I pushed myself off the ground and tried my best to dust off some dirt. I quickly picked up the soccer ball. "Hey, you girls, over there! If you guys wanted to play soccer you could've just asked!" I shouted with a sneer. I placed the ball on the ground and concentrated then I kicked it so hard that some dirt went with it. It shot through the air and it was about to hit one of the screaming girls when someone caught the ball. Aw man! That could've been awesome.
"Excuse me, young lady, did I tell you that you can play soccer?" the man with blonde hair and blue eyes who caught the ball, whom I assumed was the coach, asked as he approached me. I kicked at my feet and when he got to me I shook my head. "Then I expect you not to kick this ball unless told other wise, and right now the class is going to run a lap around the field so get it done," he said handing me the ball.
I dropped the soccer ball, rolled my eyes, and started to run. I saw Jeriard in the corner of the field with Raphael getting ready to race. They glanced at each other with evil smiles and Jeriard said, "Go!" They sprinted off. I tried to catch up, but I was too out of shape. Jeriard was in the lead and Raphael tried to pick up the pace, but he failed. They went so fast it was amazing that they were able to sprint at that speed.
I ran out of breath and stopped for a few seconds. Then Jeriard caught up with me. "Hey, how you holding up?" he asked with an amused face when I started jogging again. "You have some dirt on your face" he laughed. I tried my best to clean off my face with my shirt.
I laughed. "I can totally beat you," I challenged. I know I wouldn't beat him in a race but it was worth a try.
"Honey, you can't beat me even if you tried," he laughed. I took off sprinting leaving him there dazed.
"Want to bet?" I yelled back at him. I saw him running toward me. My heart started racing and my eyes started to burn. I tried to keep my feet light and concentrated on my destination, which was the last corner of the field.
I was almost there; suddenly Jeriard passed me and beat me in the race. When I made it I jumped up and down stomping my feet angrily. I closed my eyes when the dryness came and balled up my hands into fists, tightening them until I drew blood. "Um... Rose? Did you do that?" I heard Jeriard ask. What is he talking about?
I opened my eyes and I saw him pointing at my fists, but I noticed it wasn't my fists he was actually referring to. There was a hole in the ground underneath both of my clenched fists and the ground was tightly wrapped around my hands like a glove. This is so weird? I loosened my hands and the ground fell back to the floor. Oh shit! I can control earth, too. This is awesome!
I felt so happy that I wanted to jump on someone, until I coughed when it suddenly became hard to breath. I heard the coach blow his whistle and everyone gathered around him. I followed, too.
"Alright! I need two teams!" He shouted holding up two fingers. "I want Ray to be captain for one team and Henry captain for the other. Now everyone go into your respectable teams," he announced as he clapped his hands.
Jeriard grabbed my arm and pulled me toward Ray's team where everyone seemed to gather. That's so mean! Poor Henry, he's my friend. I tore my arm away from Jeriard's grip and ran to Henry's team. It was mostly consisted of short boys that looked a little scared. I was the only girl so far and I felt too tall. Henry looked confident that he was able to win this. Whatever this is.
Henry noticed my confused face and he walked up to me. "So the point of this game is to knock out the other team before they knock our team out. It's really dangerous; because they will all be using their gifts and strength so look out for wolves, werewolves, vampires, and shifters. Those are usually the strongest." He informed me on the rules and walked away.
I was actually really scared. My heart was racing and my eyes were burning. I looked at our team and noticed all the boys were getting ready. The coach gave us orange shirts and the other team had on red shirts. He blew the whistle and the other team charged toward us, but we stayed put. I was shaking and I couldn't control my actions.
I froze in place when an abnormally large wolf snarled at me. It lunged forward and opened it's mouth to bite me I closed my eyes in fright. I heard it whimper and run away. What happened? I looked up to see a small girl wearing an orange shirt and a black hoodie standing in front of me blood stained the ground.
She offered me a hand, "Don't get scared just fight they might look strong, but they aren't," she stated as I got on my feet then she seemed to vanish. Where'd she go?
I noticed her pop up in front of a really tall guy and she tripped him and smashed her fist into his ribs. He yelled in pain. I gritted my teeth. I noticed an even larger wolf running toward me so I quickly took out my lighter and flicked it on. When the wolf jumped I made a wall of fire as he went through he turned back into a person. He was singed everywhere and I kicked him in the ribs making him go limp on the ground. That was so cool!
I watched as Henry was punched in the chest by a vampire dude, he skidded across the ground suddenly he turned into black smoke then reappeared above the vampire's head as he brought his fist down, knocking him out cold. Whoa! What's Henry's power? That was fascinating! I noticed that most of the other team was knocked out, already. I saw a lot of black smoke and werewolves were falling to the floor one by one. Only one of our teammates was knocked out, I think we're winning.
Four more people to go! I ran up to them, but the girl with the hoodie jumped on top one of the guys who turned into a normal sized grey wolf. He tried biting the girl's arm, but she crushed his shoulders. The wolf fell to the floor blood spilling out of his mouth. How does she do that? I saw that Raphael was still in the game, but he didn't see the girl with the hoodie smack him in the back of the head. Two more left! A vampire girl ran toward me and I stomped my foot on the ground. It sent a wave through the earth making her fall straight on her back and before she was able to get up Henry punched her in the stomach. One left!
The last guy was a really big guy with angry red eyes and suddenly he turned into a bull. Really a bull! I tried my best to run away, but I just had to trip didn't I? The bull rammed me with his horns, scraping my back and dragging me along the ground. I threw my hands in the air making the bull fly through the air when I brought the earth up underneath him. I took that same piece of earth and smashed him into the floor. That's what he gets for making me angry! I heard people laughing and I turned to see all my teammates laughing at how I took out the bull. I blushed all over.
"Team orange wins! Too bad for team red, go run a lap!" the coach demanded. All of team red ran a lap around. I saw Jeriard glaring at me probably for not being on his team.
The rest of the day went on as a blur as I daydreamed about my fascinating abilities. I had Henry in my art class and the mysterious girl with the black hoodie, too. I wonder who she is.
