Dinner

Dick and I sat beside one another, the awkward silence in the room almost deafening. Across from us were the fabled 'batbrothers' as Dick had affectionately called them; Tim, Jason, and Damian were evenly spaced apart, the youngest of the bunch aggressively stabbing at his meat while the other two seemed to be competing in their plight to bore a hole in my head.

Bruce was seated at the head of the table, calmly eating his dinner.

"Do you guys talk or are you all going to continue brooding?" I set my fork on the placemat, not feeling all that hungry anymore.

Dick nudged me with his shoulder, concern in his eyes. I shrugged in response, avoiding his gaze.

During our time under my father's control, after we'd gained each other's trust, telling me stories about his brother seemed to be the only thing to keep Dick going, at the time it was only Jason that was around, Tim came in during Dick's roundabout as a titan and Damian when we settled the first time after our escape.

"So your name is Princess?" Jason was the one to break the silence, tearing me out of my thoughts.

I shot a dirty look at Dick, one I knew he felt because he sent me a cheeky grin. Rolling my eyes, I cleared my throat. "No. It's not. With the team my name is the Keeper"

"Well isn't that impersonal" Tim's eyes narrowed. "Especially when you apparently know everything about us already"

"I don't know everything" I set my hands in my lap uncomfortably.

Damian tutted. "So what do you know?"

"Enough" I picked up my glass, sipping at it.

Before anyone could respond, Bruce Wayne spoke. "Boys." The word had a tone of finality and left no room for argument.

"What've you figured out B?" Dick leaned against his chair muttering under his breath.

"I think we should be focusing on helping our guest feel welcome" Batman looked at his three sons pointedly, he turned his gaze on me. "From what I understand you are going to be staying with us until Dick has recovered"

I nodded. "Thank you for letting me come with. The others at the mountain are a little overwhelming"

Dick laughed under his breath, wincing at the action before his expression fell, becoming more serious. "How are they?"

"Their enhanced healing has helped most of them along. Artemis will be sporting some bruises but is otherwise fine." Batman reported.

Dick nodded to himself, seemingly satisfied by the answer.

"I'm sorry. Are we not going to talk about how Dick disappeared for three years? Then he comes back, bonds with us in the name of family only to randomly disappear for the last two years." Jason finally snapped. "Then he comes home with some random chick like we're supposed to be okay with all of it."

"I already told you who she was" Dick gritted out.

"No you haven't told us squat. I want to know where golden boy was"

"Well that sucks for you" I muttered, much to the amusement of my friend.

"What was that?" Jason demanded.

"Nothing" I looked away, sipping my water awkwardly.

"C'mon Jason, just leave it alone. When Dick wants to tell us he will" Tim tried to intervene.

"Fine. We all know you won't be able to keep your mouth shut for long" Jason got up, angrily dropping his napkin on the table before storming off.

"Well wasn't that eventful. Anyone for desert?" Alfred spoke up, seemingly appearing out of nowhere

"No thanks Alfred, I think we're going to go to bed" Dick stood up as well, offering me a helping hand which I rolled my eyes at, but accepted.

"The two of you are going together?" Bruce's eyebrow quirked in question, the remaining teens watching in interest while the butler seemed passive.

"Well I was just gonna drop her off and go talk to Jason" Dick glanced toward where his brother had gone. "He seems to be taking this all very hard"

"Everyone did" Tim picked at his now cold food. "When I first came in it was like even saying your name was forbidden. The original Robin, just gone. Now you're staying in the manor for the first time in what? Five years and it's only because you were seriously hurt"

"I'm sorry it had to be that way Tim. I'd never meant to be gone that long but I needed space. My argument with Bruce hurt me more than I thought it would" Dick's hand subtly slipped into mine.

Tim and Damian threw accusatory looks at their father. "And what of the girl?" Damian crossed his arms.

"I'm really just going wherever he goes-" I pointed toward Dick.

"Because we have a deal." He finished. "Now, tomorrow I promise I'll fill you guys in more."

"No, you're going to be resting. Tomorrow you are bed bound" I pat his shoulder and released his hand. "You guys can visit if you want, but I'm making sure he follows doctor's orders. This dinner was a test and your brother failed it"

"What? You didn't even know this dinner existed until Alfred told us" Dick pouted.

"Don't think I didn't notice all the pained winces" I shot back.

Dick sighed in defeat. "Fine but only because I know you won't stop until this happens"

"Good to know you're making wise decisions" I grinned.

Dick pushed my face away with an eye roll. "I always make good decisions"

I could barely hold back a laugh as his family all scoffed in unison, well except Damian, he just tutted.

Weird kid.

"Mhm" we waved as I gently pushed him toward the way we'd come in.

When we got further away, I fell in step with Dick. "Well that went better than I thought it would."

"Bruce knows something," Dick replied solemnly. "And that's the last thing either of us needs or wants right now."

"You and I both know that he kept my name out of his business."

"Yeah but Bruce has connections, they could have known"

"Relax Dick, if I was really worried about your dad finding out, I wouldn't have come"

"Just saying" he grumbled.

"We'll be okay"
