Chapter V
make a wish upon a time
"Good morning." Kairos greeted, taking his gloves off.
A chorus of morning greetings echoed throughout the floor. Kairos shuffled to his cube, taking off his outer wear and taking a seat on his desk with a loud flop sound.
A sudden knocking on the side of his cubicle made Kairos look towards the disturbance.
"Heya! Looking dead as always, Jang." A teasing, obnoxious voice said while inviting himself without permission. Kairos huffed in annoyance as he rolled his chair to see the intruder, he calls his work best friend, more clearly. Here we go again!
"No wonder. I have to see your face for the next nine hours." Kairos grumbled but the hint of a teasing bite made Erik Johnson smile amusedly.
"Har har! Anyway, I got this mail for you." Johnson said as he placed the green, Christmas decorated mail on Kairos' desk and shuffled away from it. Looking through his rubbish bin for no reason. Weirdo.
"Thanks." Then: "See you at lunch. Don't slack off!"
"I never!" Came the dramatically loud gasp from Johnson, a hand clutching his dress shirt for effects. With one last look, he dramatically made his exit. Not before looking back at Kairos with an annoyed puffy face, imitating an angry toddler. He seriously needs to act his age.
With a long, silent look towards the disappearing figure of his workmate, who was waving his hands enthusiastically at the other workers, Kairos wondered how he even ended up being friends with that outgoing person.
Shaking his head to focus on a more important matter, he took the mail, which looked like the Grinch vomited on it, in his hand. The slight squiggle of the festive decorated line was the only indication that made Kairos think it was possibly a Christmas card. However, flipping it over and around, he was confused to know there's only the address of the recipient and not the sender. Confusion etched into his facial expression as he flipped it around once more, as if that'll magically make the sender's information appear.
With a sceptic look he grabbed his mail opener from his desk drawer. What? His interest in knowing what's inside is greater than his fear of the mail being a packet full of toxic gas.
With a short prayer to God, he slid the opener across the mail edge. The faint sound of papers gliding made Kairos shake his leg as the anxiety was getting too high. But to his surprise, the contents of the mail only consisted of a small card. At first look, it might seem like a normal Christmas greeting card. However as Kairos continued reading through the card, he was growing confused even more. What a childish card.
He read through the card again, musing himself:
This is a one-time gift you get one do over in your life. What will it be, and how do you see the outcome changing?
Happy Holidays!
It'd be a lie if Kairos said he wasn't interested in the contents of this mail. It was tempting. He was tempted to try and see if this was a hoax or actually true.
"It'd be so embarrassing if this turns out to be a joke by the others." Kairos muttered to himself as he stared at the green paper. The statement "you get one do over in your life" staring back at him as if it's chanting "do it, do it, do it".
Shit. His mind yet again wandered to that closed door for the second time in the span of 2 hours. This is useless. His hand involuntarily crumpled the paper in his hand. He put the card back into its mail and chucked it towards his rubbish bin, slightly missing the bin. It was now sitting all battered on the floor. With one last glance at his poor attempt at throwing, Kairos got back to work.
What a waste of time!
