You are either a girl or a boy,
they say;
if you are not, then
something is wrong with you

You are either a woman or a person,
they say;
abandon all else for
kitchen and nursery
and study hard
only if you're not pretty enough

You are either an adult or a child,
they say;
for with age comes responsibilities
and with responsibilities
you have no more room to play

You are either a human or an animal;
they are supposed to be two different entities
because everyone wants to be special

You are either a freak or a bore
because that's the way we're made to be

But there is one thing we never are:
happy;
because that emotion is only a phantom,
fleeting concept
in our own heads
