Expectations vs reality
"It's so nice to finally be able to see you," I say.
"We saw each other often in your dreams," Flyjoy replies.
"Yes, I know, but it's not the same. In my dreams, everything is always so fuzzy and it's difficult to hold on to the truth. Now, I feel like all of this is real and before I had my doubts," I say.
After he catches me up on the latest news, we decide to go to the river bank where one of the portals connecting the two worlds was to see what is happening there. Going through the city is such a challenge that I wonder what is wrong.
When we arrive at the river bank, Peace is there waiting for us. It is such a treat to see Peace, the magnificent unicorn standing in this world, and spreading much-needed light to the confused humans. The ones who come close enough to the unicorn start being calm and collected.
I feel much better now that he is here because everything will be okay, it must be. He sees me approaching, and he seems happy to see me.
"We did it!" he says proudly.
I am not so sure that everything went well, so I ask him why I saw so many humans acting strangely.
"Ah, that is a small problem," he says. "It seems that we underestimated the humans' dependency on technology. Some humans were eager to accept the connection with their magical friends, but others refused. Although technology has been destroyed, and the evil has no control of the humans, some of them have been so deeply programmed by the technology and the expectations of the human society that they are unable to accept us."
"Some even refuse to believe their own eyes and claim that we are just very realistic hallucinations. I did expect that some humans would have difficulty accepting the new reality, but I didn't expect there to be so many of them. I should have known better, but as you know our seers couldn't predict what would happen after we severed the chains by which the humans were held," Peace said pacing briskly. "The dark force that once controlled them is unable to enter this world now since there is no technology left and since we made a protective shield around the planet. It is made of pure magic. Still, some humans don't seem to be able to see the light."
"Wait a minute, do you even know what the evil force was? How are you so sure it is gone? Won't it come back?" I inquire.
"Our seers can tell us a lot of things about it, but for some reason, they can't clearly see the humans and their reactions. We know that the darkness came from another parallel universe where it already consumed everything so it wanted a new feeding ground, Earth," Peace says.
I am shocked to learn that there are parallel universes but I stop myself from interrupting the magnificent creature standing in front of me.
"Their goal is always the same, to cause wars and mayhem because they feed on negative energy. They feed on blood, hate, jealousy and all the other negative emotions. They started their conquest by slipping a small part of their dark energy through a portal a long time ago when magicals and humans were still living in peace and harmony.
"Since it was such a small amount it went unregistered by our white magic, and it started infiltrating unsuspecting humans. Once it entered the first human, it used his aura, his life force, to protect itself from detection.
"Then it poisoned the humans' souls while at the same time spreading like a plague. By the time we realized that something was wrong, the humans were one with the darkness. We couldn't clearly see what was wrong with them.
"Once we severed the connection and left, it was able to spread freely and step by step it started controlling people through technology. From the invention of the wheel to the invention of the telephone. Those were just small steps in its goal of taking over the world.
"You have probably noticed how with the development of technology, there were more people dying and that is not a coincidence. They might say that technology doesn't kill, that humans are the ones who kill, but it was actually technology that poisoned their hearts. It also helped them develop those ideas of possession, superiority, hatred, discrimination and so on," he explained.
"But that's not possible! People were hurting each other even before the technology developed, weren't they? How do you explain that?" I asked hastily.
"My dear May, yes it is true that people were hurting each other even then, but it's because the darkness was using them as its vessel. As you may know, humans are very unpredictable and using them as vessels became inconvenient since sometimes they did manage to exercise free will.
"That annoyed the Darkness, so it thought of another plan that worked out much better for them. It made humans think that they were inventing technology to help themselves lead better lives but actually, the Darkness used it as its home. It whispered to its inventors and as people made better technology the Darkness grew and became stronger and was able to control more and more people but it made it look as if they were actually free.
"That is the most horrible thing about it, it made humans respect it and cherish it in the form of technology as it fed on their life force and conflicts and left many humans bone dry.
"I am horrified to even think what they went through, so I think that it's normal that their reaction to all this is so strange. There are some humans who were more susceptible to the Darkness, so they will need a bit more time to adjust that's all. "
