Chapter forty three

Viraj was taken to the temple by his friends and there, he had worn newer clothes and was readied all over again. His makeup was also done all over again and he wished all that to be over. Soon, he was helped on a mare (female horse) as his baarat (marriage procession) started. His friends, cousins and family members started dancing as people around them got to know that a marriage was happening and a groom was passing by. The bandwale (bandsmen) were playing drums, trumpets and other things as Viraj's baarat (marriage procession) was going forward at a snail's pace. His one young cousin was also sitting in front of his on the mare.

His baashinga (over his eyes) were still on and he was still wearing a turban and a brooch. Again, he was wearing a sherwani and dhoti below but they were still changed.

Finally, the wedding procession arrived at the courtyard where the wedding was arranged. As he got down from the horse, Indrayani and Mahamaya's family did his tilak (put vermillion on him and other rituals), welcomed them and he and his baarat (procession) entered. Soon, Mahamaya joined Virat too as they both walked over to the stage with their young cousins walking ahead of them. Mahamaya had changed her clothes and looks all over again, like Viraj.

Mahamaya had changed into a peachish red saree and her hair and makeup were retouched again. She was wearing different set of jewellery and she was looking as beautiful as before too.

Finally, they appear on the stage and a saffron cloth was extended between them. Their cousin sisters start to pour yellow and red (because they were soaked in turmeric and vermillion water for a week) down their shoulders. There was a big swastika drawn on the saffron cloth. These rice grains were also given to the guests and these guests were in thousands. Relatives, relatives of relatives, neighbours, investors, business partners, colleagues and in this process, they had invited so many people.

After certain intervals, the guests would shower the couple getting married with these grains. The process was long and took them about half an hour for all the mantras (wedding hymns) to be completed. After they were done, the cloth sheet was separated from the couple as the Pandit Ji (priest) told to give garlands in their hands. Mahamaya joined her hands and accepted the garland as a sign of her being bound to him and Viraj put the garland in her neck. There were claps and more grains were showered on them by the audience and then Viraj joined his hands and bowed his head considering her height as she jumped a little and put the garland on his head. Viraj too accepted himself to be bound to her like a thread binds all the flowers in the garland together.

Vijay said, "See, our sister-in-law is already making our brother bow in front of her." Only those who were on the stage heard it and giggled as Mahamaya blushed and Viraj smirked.

Then, Indrayani and Mahesh sat besides the couple and some rituals of Kanyadaan were done. In these rituals, Mahesh handed the responsibilities of his daughter to her new husband Viraj. Viraj, in his heart promised to love and protect her the way she was loved and protected in her father's house. After kanyadaan was done, they did lajahoma. Some mantras were being chanted and the couple who were already sitting there put rice and other offerings in the sacrificial fire.

After that, they both sat down and Viraj tied the mangalsutra (nuptial chain) around Mahamaya. Mahamaya wanted a traditional double bowled one because she believed there was a meaning why it was shaped that way. It extended all the way below her chest. He then put vermillion on her hair partition.

Then, they were made to take the seven rounds around the holy sacrificial fire. Viraj was in the front leading the rounds for three vows and Mahamaya was in the front for the remaining four vows. Each round meant a vow. The vows were as followed:

1. iṣe eka pa̍dā bhava̱ | viṣṇu̱stvānve̍tu |

Take the first step with me for nourishment. (May lord Vishnu guide us)

The idea here is that healthy eating and nourishment is the basis of a happy marriage.

2. ūrje dvi- pa̍dā bhava̱ | viṣṇustvānvetu |

Take the second step with me for health.

Healthy living means - exercise, avoidance of gambling, imbibing alcohol, smoking etc.

3. rāyas-poṣāya trīṇi pa̍dā bhava̱ | viṣṇustvānvetu |

Take the third step with me for prosperity and security.

When a couple is healthy and well-nourished they can then work hard and strive for prosperity and security.

4. mayo-bhavāya catvāri pa̍dā bhava̱ | viṣṇustvānvetu |

Take the fourth step with me for achieving consummate bliss.

Consummate bliss is a code word for keeping and preserving an intimate romantic bond. Romance and sex are the first casualties in the enterprise of marriage, so the couple are exhorted to keep this aspect alive.

5. paśubhyo pañca pa̍dā bhava̱ | viṣṇustvānvetu |

Take the fifth step with me for cattle.

Cattle connotes investment in the future which in the ancient world also included children who were the superannuation guarantee for old age.

6. ṛtubhyo ṣaḍ pa̍dā bhava̱ | viṣṇustvānvetu |

Take the sixth step with me for enjoyments according to the seasons.

There are six seasons in India and there are enjoyments mentioned in the poetic literature about the specifics of each season - so the couple are being told not to get too bogged down by their domestic and professional responsibilities and they shouldn't neglect to play together, enjoy together and go on holidays together.

7. sakhyāya sapta pa̍dā bhava̱ | viṣṇustvānvetu |

Take the seventh step with me for friendship. (May lord Vishnu guide us)

The culmination of this whole process is to achieve perfect and everlasting friendship.

Sakhā̍ sa̱pta-pa̍dā bhava̱ | sakhā̍yau sa̱pta-pa̍dā babhūva | sa̱khyam te̍ gameyam | sa̱khyāt-te̱ mā yo̍ṣam | sa̱khyān me̱ mā yo̍ṣṭāḥ | sama̍yāva̱ saṅka̍lpāvahai̱ | iṣa̱m-ūrjam a̱bhi-sa̱mvasā̍nau̱ | sannau̱ manā̍guṁsi̱ sam vra̱tā sam u̍ ci̱tāny-aka̍ram ||

You are my friend in life through these seven steps; may I attain your friendship, may our friendship bind us together; may we never cease being friends, may our intentions be of one accord, may our radiance be one, and our minds be united. We are united in harmony and affection, radiant with kind thoughts, enveloped in enjoyment and strength, united are our minds, our vows and our hearts.

Finally, the Pandit Ji (priest) announced, "You both are husband and wife from today," and there was a roar of claps from everywhere in the hall. Finally, after all this was done, people came forward in groups and families to get pictures clicked with the new couple and give them gifts and blessings from their side.

Next, Vivek had the ritual of pinching Viraj's ear so that he could remember his duties towards Vivek's sister and this event was done too...

*****
Some rituals can be different from other cultures while I might be wrong on some too. The vows part I copy pasted from quora.

Happy Holi to everyone. Today is the day filled with colours and we burnt all the evil inside us yesterday night in the holy Holika fire.
