Chapter 3: Nightmare
Stick around for some previews.
After finishing the conversation, both girls started to walk back into the village, as if it never happened. They took their separate ways but for the first time that day, Jesse thought of something that hadn't struck her until now. Where are her friends? They had just disappeared like... like... Like they never even existed. It was... Strange. She couldn't get it out of her head, it was stuck in her thoughts like glue.
Entranced, she walked around the village, listening only to the quiet steps she made, trying to recall every detail of their faces, for some reason she couldn't remember what they looked like. Just their names and hair colour. The details were slipping from her mind like ice. She couldn't--
CLUNK!!
BASH!!
Suddenly, Jesse was lying on the concrete, head inches apart from the sharp edge of the stairs, threatening to open her skull to the world. "H-Hey... What was that?" She looked up to see a young guard (with silver armour covering his dark tan skin) towering over her, presenting a panicked expression.
"I'm terribly sorry ma'am. Are you ok?" He reached out his hand for Jesse's support. "I'm Brian. I'm a guard here.. You must be Jesse, right?"
"Yes..?" She replied in a question, why'd said reply like that, well because Brian gave off that vibe the same vibe Ivor gave off the first time she met him in that alleyway. She didn't-- no, couldn't trust him. "How'd you know?"
"Oh, all the guards know." He answered far too quickly 'Yeah right' Jesse thought. "Garroth made Laurence and Dante write a report on why they left their posts."
"Seems... su- strict." Jesse quickly corrected herself, if she wanted to stay in the village she couldn't make blind assumptions. "Is he your boss or something?"
Before Brian could cockily respond, another voice interrupted their conversation, "Well if being head guard means I'm his boss, then yes." Both faces turned to the gruff manly voice.
His body was fully covered in iron armour, from head to toe. "Brian, your father was looking for you, he's by the docks."
"Really? What does he nee-- damn it!! I totally forgot I promised to help him fish.." He yelled at himself before he ran towards the water. "It was nice meeting you!!"
Both pairs of eyes turned from the funny sight of Brian running and tripping on every pebble and stone, and face each other laughing. "*sigh* That kid... in a way, I hope he never grows up..... If he hasn't already... So you're Jesse?"
Garroth seemed more trusting that Brian but slightly stricter than Brian's bubbly personality. "Yes, I am. And from what I've gathered, you must be Garroth."
"Yes I am. Um.. I know this is the first time we've formally met but as Lord Aphmau's head guard, I feel the need to ensure you're ok. I um... I wanted to know if you needed me to send out a letter to your family in.." Garroth was calm and kind, but it seemed like he wasn't smiling underneath his helmet despite his happy attitude.
Wait-- Did he say family!? That meant she could find her friends. But she wasn't from there.. There'd be no village that knows about them... Well except O'kasis but she was NOT trying her chances with that place. "Well.. Heh... I'm actually not from here... It's kinda confusing but.. Not." Her explanation probably would even confuse Aphmau, and reader I know you can understand what she said but that's only because I simplified it so you could understand, I don't know why but I did. "Let me start over--"
"No, don't worry. I understand, I think. It's okay there are a few people here who would be considered outlaws, and I'm sure Lord Aphmau would be more than welcome to you." It seems like this village gives off the 'Assume-What-People-Are-Saying-Vibe-Cuz-That's-Totally-Ok' but all the assumptions were close to the truth or good enough to suffice as the answer. (Aka Author The Dragon is lazy)
"Wow that's great... I suppose.." Her breaths was slightly shaken, and heavy like a runners would be.
Never had Jesse had trouble breathing but she thought nothing of it, that is until she lost control of her breaths. Her breaths erupted into a strong flowing river, and her face morfed into a panicked expression as her body hurt to move like she was a rag doll being stabbed with several sharp needles.
"Are you ok" Garroth asked, concern laced in his voice.
"I.... c.. an't.. br.... bre... breath.."
Suddenly, Garroth realised the exposed seriousness of the situation before him and did what any normal person would do, comfort her. "It's ok.." his attempt made her panic more as his scratchy armour scraped and dented her soft skin. "Ok, it's alright. KIKI!! DONNA!! I NEED HELP OVER HERE!!" Garroth screamed for the two healers talking in the nearby plaza.
The world around her spun and polluted her mind with horrible echoed voices getting quieter and quieter. "JESSE!!! JESSE!! JESse!! JEsse!! Jesse... J e s s e... J e s s e.."
Then darkness consumed her...
"Jesse" A hushed voice echoed from above.
Her eyes snapped open, to met the same ocean blue eyes that hypnotised her the same day she started an adventure of a life time. "Lukas.." Her voice was soft and fragile as she starred up at the man she loved.
"Yes Jesse.. It's me.."
His smile warmed her heart and melted her soul. "D-Don't leave me.." Jesse begged afraid this would be their last meeting.
A skinny hand found itself on Jesse's smooth check. "I promise.. I love you... I will never leave you Jesse... N e v e r....."
Jesse opened her eyes once again. A dream, of course it was a dream. Why would Lukas say that? He'd leave her. He wouldn't make promises. He'd never love her.
She moved from the hard concrete floor she was carelessly sprawled across and pushed herself up with her left hand and used her right hand the hold onto her mercilessly aching stomach.
Something had happened....
Everything was.. different....
The sky was black but starless, someone had stolen the beautiful white dots that normally paint as flow along the sky. Along with the stars, someone had stolen the emotions that blessed the town, and the people with it. Everyone was gone, the town was empty... A shell cracked open and emptied before being crushed together once more..
There.. Was.. Nothing....
Then she saw it.
Men, women, children and pets dead. Stomachs carefully sliced open and their guts pulled and overflowing onto the cold floor. Blood melting off their bodies and staining their perfect skin. Head and arms were cracked open and swords and daggers stuck out like bone.
The sight of it made Jesse want to throw up, but she couldn't. The sensation never left her throat and cursed her stomach the more corpses met her eyes. It was all she saw, death after death, bodies carelessly thrown on top of one another. Silence, it killed her but it couldn't have been as brutal as those peoples death was, then a CLANK of metal echoed from behind her and became aggressive after each repeat.
With much effort and numbness, she found the energy to turn her head and saw the same raven haired Lord fighting one of the few people she loved. Her sister was fighting Lord Aphmau, brutally with a glimmer in her eye. Her eyes. Jesse couldn't recognise them, the eyes that raised her were dead all over with hints of lust, blood lust. She had killed everyone and wasn't done. The lords long blade aimed at Jesse's sisters shoulder was quickly grabbed and thrown from her before the white sword was plunged into Aphmau stomach, mixing everyone's blood in the body of the woman who touched and welcomed them. She collapsed and then was gone...
Dead.
They all were.
And Jesse was next.
The grey eyes of her sister stomping towards the frozen girl stuck to the ground was all Jesse focused on. Then the cold dead, voice once belonged to her sister spoke with venom, "Nighty-Night sis!!!" The sword lifted and swung back down and then-- and then--
Then Jesse woke up. She was in the soft bed again, her arm and head bandaged tightly and resting on a pillow. Those dreams, so awful but so lifelike. It wasn't a dream or a nightmare. It must have been... a warning. Or it was just a sick joke her mind made... But, Jesse didn't even think her own mind was capable of something so sick, and stomach churning.
It was awful. Even knowing that she had a dream like that sickened her to her core.
Once again she pushed herself up with her injured arm. She was in the same room she woke up in that morning, it looked different in the glow of the night and illumination from the next room. Though it wasn't like her dreams, it was a calming darkness that filled her room, not a fearful one, though it still frightened her to the depths of her soul. She couldn't remain in the darkness and risk another panic attack, she had to leave.
The room was closing in on her as she bolted and tripped towards the door before finally struggling to open and falling in the shine of the light. Her shaken and broken breaths finally steadied as she noticed, what looked like a sleeping guard on an, uncomfortable looking chair, by the door. The light and guard put her breaths and emotions at ease, calming her. Even still, knowing that this black haired guard was by her door didn't destroy her petrified state, only made her feel uneasy. She needed someone to speak to but only one person came to mind, and that was Aphmau. She was the only one she could talk to.
Steadily and sneakily, she creeped upstairs trying not to step on a loose floor board. Finally, she reached the top floor and saw two purple doors either side of her. She checked the door on the left to see the two children peacefully sleeping beneath their blue covers that lay atop of their bed. Their room covered in toys and the carpet jumbled. They obviously went to bed in a hurry.
It wasn't Aphmau's room, so she checked the other and there she was. Laying there on her side in her purple princess bed was Aphmau, impatiently trying to sleep before she noticed the raven haired girl staring at her. "Jesse" she announced suprised, her sweet squeaky voice hiding her tiredness. "What are you doing up? Are you ok?"
"I'm fine" Jesse responded, almost chocking on her words.
"I heard about what happened, are you sure you're ok?" Her voice laced with concern. "You can tell me if you're not."
This lord was too kind. "Yes I'm sure... I just had a little nightmare. B-but I don't want to talk about it!!" She added quickly, knowing it meant she had to re-live it.
Little did she know the Lord had a similar horrible dream, though, that was a secret she would rather keep to herself. "It's fine.. I- I know the pain." She could sympathise at least, then she suggested something that would probably calm both the anxious girls and assist them to sleep. "You want to sleep on the other side of the bed..?" She slightly giggled."I know it might be uncomfortable but you know it might make you feel better..."
For the first time since she arrived, Jesse smiled a real smile. "I guess that might help.." She whispered before getting in the covers.
Before sleeping Jesse whispered something only her ears could hear. "I don't care what it takes, I will find you.. Petra, Lukas, Ivor, I'm coming for you.."
Her head then rested on the soft pillow where both the girls slept peacefully knowing that they were safe.
As far as they knew...
