Chapter 18: Haunting Shadows
So, I've been trying to do the math for Events of Dishonored. Corvo returned on the 18th day of the Month of Earth, 1837 and was imprisoned that very day. He then spends 6 months in Coldridge, which (if you count the Month of Earth) would mean that Corvo broke out about Axton's 19th birthday. However, if you don't count that month (which I'm pretty sure normal people don't) then that will mean that Corvo broke out about the 18th day of the The Month of High Cold, which makes more sense on how the assassination contracts go. Dr. Galvani's journal states that the Boyle's parties always fall on the 28th day of the Month of High Cold. So, there are 7 days in a week, and that means there are exactly 4 weeks in a month in Dishonored. If Corvo broke out on the 18th, then that will mean it's been 10 days since the day he escaped to the party. 1 week and 3 days... then you count another day for killing the Lord Regent, so a week and 4 days. Then the amount of time You've been setting adrift in the flooded district which one can assume is about a day or two, so that's about 5-6 days then going after Daud then those damned assholes who betrayed probably takes about 1 more day. But It also states that Emily wasn't formally recognized as Empress until 1838, but that makes sense cause they probably had to do a lot of political stuff as well as training and prepping Emily before officially dubbing her Empress of the Isles. Which would make sense if it took a few months, which means the remaining weeks of the Month of Ice all the way the way to the Fugue Feast. But then, I was reading the Dishonored Wiki and it says that, "The majority of Dishonored is set in between the Months of High Cold and Hearths, 1837.[citation needed]" Month of High Cold makes sense (BC the Boyle Party is in The 28th day of the Month of High Cold which will mean that the assassination of Hiram Burrows would be the 1st day of the Month of Ice), but I can't possibly see it spanning all the way to the Month of Hearths unless Corvo has been set adrift longer than we thought and if they rested before going after the 'Loyalists.' for a month or so. So unless a developer officially states this, then I am going to make this end after two weeks cause that makes more sense.
Which means... Damn! That was the shortest rebellion in history! 2 weeks (Not including Corvo's time in prison)! And yet those dumbasses had the audacity to throw Corvo away like trash! They'd be still running around like headless chickens if they hadn't broken Corvo out of prison!
But I'm getting ahead of myself, the reason I'm bringing this up now, is that I mention a time frame in this part.
BTW, This chapter would have been named "Swearing is Caring." But I found this name more... appropriate.
While Axton tended to his wound, Corvo took Samuel through their mission step-by- step. When he was finished, he looked pretty impressed. "You found a way to keep Waverly Boyle alive? Yet also taking her out of the picture? I must say that you two continue to impress me. Shame about those two Overseers, but I bet my last coin that they might have been corrupt, like most in service to the Abbey now a days...."
They remained silent, a comfortable one, as they sailed on. Corvo starting to help Axton close the wound with a needle and thread the assassin always keeps on him for times like this. They where able to finish cleaning and closing it just as the Hound Pit's Pub came into view.
"Hmm. Lord Pendleton said he'd meet us here. I'd check the wine cellar. Losing family gives a man a thirst." Samuel started as he drove his boat closer to the pub.
When they docked, Samuel jumped off as Axton and Corvo pulled off their masks, then they too exited. Cecelia was watching from the top of the steps, fidgeting with her rag as she did.
"I'll go talk to Pendleton. I'll meet you back here." Corvo said then made his way towards the wine cellar. Axton nodded and turned to Cecelia.
"Welcome back sir." She said timidly.
"Thank you. Trust me, it's good to be back."
"How was the party... I mean..." Cecelia said, glancing down before continuing. "Must seem a little drab.. Coming back here..." She held her arms tightly around her as if trying to comfort herself.
"Nah, I never liked parties. Especially noblemen parties. Yeah, it was fancy and stuff, but I never did like fancy."
She glanced up and smiled softly at him. "How where the costumes?"
"Posh." Axton replied, waving his hand like he was airing away a stench. "And some of the masks that these nobles wore... well... I can say it looked like their two year old made it or something."
Cecelia laughed. "Really?"
"Yeah, Corvo's was probably the best looking one. If not his then I'd assume the Overseers', and they aren't even the guests!" She laughed again, her blue eyes twinkling as she smiling at Axton who was also laughing. He never noticed them before now. As blue as the sea, sparkling like the sun's reflection. He didn't know why they looked so beautiful at that moment, perhaps it was because he's never seen that glint of pure happiness in her eyes before. He must have been staring, because she then began to blush slightly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ears.
"Well, I should be getting back to work. The Pub won't clean it'self... I'm glad you're back, safe and sound."
He watched her go, not knowing the longing look in his eyes as they trailed her back inside the pub. He never really noticed the way his heart beat faster and his palms get sweaty whenever they speak. But today he did, for some reason.
Before he could ponder it further, Corvo grabbed his shoulder. He frowned at his son's look in his eyes, glancing between the pub and Axton. "Is something wrong?"
"Just trying to figure things out in my mind." He replied, shaking his head and turning back to Corvo.
"Lord Pendleton said that Admiral Havelock and Martin want to see us. He also apologize again for his outburst yesterday. I assume they are going to make us trike back at the Lord Regent now. Can you... can you handle it?" He asked, eyeing the new wound on his son. The wound he had inflicted. His stomach knotted as he frowned at it, guilt swarming him like a hoard of bloodflies on a hot day in Karnaca.
"I've been through worse, I'll live. And I am NOT going to let you take on the Lord Regent on your own. Just as you wouldn't want me to if our situations where switched. We do this as we have for the past week. Together."
So with that said, the two enter the pub. They find Callista sitting at a booth alone, looking increasingly frustrated.
"You go to Havelock's briefing, I'll see what's wrong with Callista?" Axton asked. Corvo nodded and made his way towards the stairs as he made his way towards Callista.
"Axton? Emily is hiding again. It started as a game, but it's turned into her way of teasing me. If you see her, will you send her back to me? It's time for her studies."
"Sure, I'll look for her right now, Corvo won't mind filling me in on the details of our next mission later."
"Thank you. *Sigh* Just think, the future empress has a bar as a school house..."
"Yeah..." He then left before he could start thinking bad thoughts...
It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault. It's not your fault....
Those words kept resonating in his mind as he searched for his little sister. Corvo had kept trying to drill that thought into his mind, but he knew it was his fault.
He prevented Corvo from saving the Empress, his mother.
He had taken his sister and left his father for the fate of Coldridge.
He might not have physically plunged the bade into her heart.
But from the way he has felt afterwards about it, he might as well have.
STOP! He mentally exclaimed, as he crumbled in Corvo's room. Or, he thought he mentally exclaimed.
"Axton, who are you talking to?" Emily asked as she ran out of her hiding spot. She stopped when he glanced up at her, tears in his eyes threatening to pour out.
I've been doing so good so far... why now? Why break now?
"Axton! Are you alright? What happened? Was it Lord Pendleton again?"
She sat down on her knees before him, and wrapped her hands around his neck. "It's okay Axton."
"I'm so sorry for everything Emily. If it wasn't for me, mo- your mother will still be alive... None of this will be like it is now... your life would have been better, happier... I'm so sorry..."
"It's not your fault though!" Emily exclaimed, pulling herself from Axton. She then pointed a finger at him with a stern face as she says. "As Empress, I forbid you from thinking that way or saying things like that EVER again!"
Axton chuckled, wiping the tears from his face as he stood. He then bowed to her. "As you wish Young Empress."
"I want to give you this, I found it by the river and placed it under my pillow for good luck. Take it, and don't feel bad about anything again. Now, I think I should return to Callista now. Hiding gets boring after a while. Come on! Walk me down there. Please?"
"Alright!"
"Yay!"
As they made their way down, Emily started chattering the whole way.
"When I'm empress, I'll never have to live in a place like this again." She said, holding his hand as she rubbed her finger over the railing and seeing the dust. She then got sad and stopped Axton before continuing. "I dreamed that the river got higher and higher and we all climbed up to Corvo's room, but then the water turned to rats, I never have good dreams here. But hey! Do you think there's any treasure buried under here? I dug a hole once but all I found was old whale bones."
"I... don't know. I guess if you search the right place perhaps?" They started walking again, when they went past the hallway that lead towards Pendleton's, Havelock's, and the servant's quarters, Emily giggled and tugged Axton's sleeve. He bent down and she cuffed her hand around his ear and whispered. "I made a list of all the swear words the Admiral uses! But Callista made me throw it away."
Axton laughed. Just then, he heard a loud noise and Havelock's voice ringing out the F-bomb. He and Emily glanced at each other and then burst out into fits of laughter, then hurried down the stairs just as the door was about to fling open.
When they came into the bar part, Callista looked relived and slightly infuriated. "Thank you, Axton."
"The Admiral sweared again, this time, he said f-"
"Emily!!!" The Admiral exclaimed with enhanced cheerfulness as Corvo came in close behind.
"What happened?" Axton whispered to Corvo. He whispered back, "he got mad at Martin a and a pile of books fell onto his feet. It was probably one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my entire life!"
"Now I wish I where there..."
"We should probably get going! You know... a usurper to dethrone..." Corvo cut in, grabbing Axton's arm and pulling him to the door.
"OrbeforeCallistabeatstheAdmiral'sassallthewaytoDunwallTower." Axton said rapidly before having Corvo yank him out the door, busting his ass off at what he had just said. And knowing by the way Callista was currently staring at Admiral Havelock, that it might just happen...
~☆~
"This is it, Corvo... both of you actually. I know that the last time you two have been here... well... let's say that they weren't the best of memories and leave it at that. But perhaps now, you can make up for what happened then. I feel that you two might need to rely on each other in many ways. No matter what happens, know that I think you two are strong and brave just for returning. Anyways, it'll be a bit of a climb from the water lock. Most important thing is killing the Lord Regent. Built himself quite a place at the top of the tower. Calls it his safe room it somthin'. Crazy if ya ask me."
"He must suspect we are coming." Axton said. His tone grave, hollow. Corvo wrapped and arm around him and pulled him closer. But he didn't feel any better himself. He remembered the way he glared at Axton that day, he saw his reflection in the glass of the assassin's mask. It promised pain, and suffering. Looks like I delivered, but he never deserved it.
He knew that Axton had never forgotten either. Not the way the Empress screamed for Corvo and her daughter, the color of her blood, or the death glare from the man who would later turn out to be his own father. His first impression of the place was despair, blood, and death. Now, his second would be vengeance, and they'll see about death. But perhaps afterwards, it will be of fondness and love. When all of this is over. When Emily will rule with Corvo and Axton at her back, and the Loyalists at her side. Perhaps, or perhaps not.
"Another point of interest while I'm givin' ya the grand tour. The Broadcast control station here- where all them announcements come from, might be worth lookin' into."
"Yer ready?" He asked, turning back to Axton and Corvo. "Next time I see you the Lord Regent'll be dead. And I am positive that between the both of you. He will be, or in a far worse spot than ever before."
They jumped into the water and swiftly made their way inside. Two leviathans in the depths, stalking their prey. They climbed and jumped on pipes, then blinked into vents, their destination? A small balcony like place that leads to the control room. The assassin tried to ignore the feeling of deja vu. He half expected to turn and see Daud at his side, and a few times became startled by the sight of Corvo, his father.
"And then, Aldo got docked for wistlin' on duty. Regent asks, how's he gonna hear this assassin comin'? And Barris? Docked for not bathing enough. He says, the assassin's going to smell him in the dark."
Corvo and Axton halt, listening. They turn to each other and have to bite their tongues to refrain from laughing.
"I have a mind for docking you for too much conversing, guardsman."
"Oh no you wont, 'cause I helped with the new alarms the Lord Regent asked fer. And he says to me, 'Good work.' That's right. Me. For a second I thought he might even shake hands, but then, no."
"Quiet."
"Wow." Axton whispered, turning to Corvo with a raised eyebrow. "He really is paranoid, isn't he?"
"Yeah, well, guess he isn't wrong about being paranoid. an assassin is coming after him. And a vengeful Royal Protector."
He chuckled and turned back to the Control room door. His face immediately going grave.
"This is the way we came..." He started. He didn't need to elaborate further. Corvo got the gist. He was about to open the door when Axton held his hand up and used Dark Vision.
He chuckled ruefully to himself as he turned to Corvo. "Arc Pylon. Should have guessed the Lord Regent would have known where we came in, and made sure that it was well guarded. Idiot, for anyone untouched by the Outsider that is." He then stopped time and ran inside, Corvo following. He took out the whale oil tank and let time resume once more. He came back up and walked towards the pylon. He placed a hand on it metallic frame and glanced up.
And there they where, like phantoms. Their actions ever imprinted in this place like a deep, ugly scar on the winding passage of time.
There was Daud, leaning over the railing, staring at the Whaler to real Axton's left. He turned the valve and switch, disabling the power for a short time. He turned to Daud. The Knife turned away and nodded at Ghost Axton, who nodded and ran out the door to his right. Daud close behind. The other two blinking right after them, vanishing beyond his view.
Corvo watched his son go in a trance like state, staring at the top of the stairs, but didn't say anything.
"We disabled the power." He said, in a voice like he was half asleep. Half aware of the place he was really in. "We ran out that door. I was first."
He blinked up to the door and opened it. The phantoms then appeared again.
Daud ran outside and turned to the stairs on the left, for the right was nothing, and looked up. Ghost Axton was already up there. Pulling out his blade and glancing sidelong at his master.
"He's remembering the sins of his past." The heart whispered. Corvo was about to say something to him, but the Heart cut him off. "Don't, he needs to go through this. It will help him heal, in the long-run."
He ran after the phantom, merging with Daud's figure, as he peeked behind the corner. Lights and wooden planks where on the real spot, but Axton's vision was in a twilight place. Neither in the present, nor the past. A phantom guard stood vigil, his back turned towards the assassins. Phantom Axton crept up to him and plunged his blade into his side. Real Axton and Ghost Daud then turned towards the mini tower to the right. Daud blinked to it, then onto the roof of the Water lock. As Ghost Axton gently lay the dying corpse of the guard down, The three other Whalers made their way to the roof.
Real Axton turned more to his right, and saw a real guard standing there, almost exactly like the phantom one was. Back turned, practically begging for a blade in his side. But this Axton wasn't Ghost Axton, he wasn't going to kill this guard. He crept up behind him and wrapped his arms around the guard in a Tyvian choke hold, the non-lethal way to take out a man. He then turned back to Ghost Axton, and pointed at the spot. "Right there, I killed a guard. Without thinking twice. Did he have a family? What was his name? Just another corpse to add to the pile. Just another ghost to haunt me as I continue to walk this earth. Asking me why? Why him?"
He then looked up at his phantom self, who too vanished to the roof with the other.
He then blinked onto the tower, then onto the roof of the water-lock. Corvo watched in silence as Axton watched his past unfold before his eyes.
Once again, Real Axton and Phantom Daud became one, running on the roof, then hiding behind a concrete roof decoration. Watching as the Whalers engaged Phantom Corvo. Phantom Emily and Jessamine huddling away as he fought the three. Corvo came running behind, Axton turned, and Ironically, saw Corvo embodying himself. Both hiding behind the other side. He saw as Emily ran into Corvo's arms, and lifted himself slightly, but not enough to be seen, to see as the Lord Regent gathered the guards below.
"We watched as you killed two of our own. Daud and I that is. Him, standing here, I there." Axton continued. He then turned to Corvo along with Phantom Daud. He pointed at Corvo/Phantom Axton, the same way Daud had, and motioned it towards Phantom Corvo under the gazebo. "He made this motion, and I knew what he wanted. He wanted me to get you out of the way, so he could deal with the Empress himself..."
He then turned back and saw as Phantom Axton blinked there, and suspended Corvo. How Phantom Daud rose from his body and blinked to the gazebo.
"NO! Not again!"
Shink!
"MOMMY!"
"CORVO!"
Axton closed his eyes and turned away. "I still hear their voices. Still see their eyes... your eyes..."
Corvo came down and wrapped his arms around his son. "It's in the past Axton. All in the past. Right now, we are avenging your mother. Right now, we are taking down a tyrant."
"I didn't do it." Axton whispered. "I didn't kill her... it wasn't my fault. At least... not completely. We where just the blades. He was the wielder. He is just as guilty as us. More so, he was the conscious entity, the one who set us on this path."
His eyes blazed with determination, all guilt and fear leaving his body as he turned to Corvo. His once enemy and now his father. He stood tall, drawing his blade and his mark blazing as he prepared a blink. He smirked under his mask, turning back to the gazebo with a new sense of purpose.
"Let's go bring down a Tyrant... together."
