Chapter 16: Learning to Tag
Axton fell asleep in Corvo's arms, and he didn't have the heart to wake him. But when it came to midday, he knew he didn't have a choice. After all, they had a party to get ready for.
He lightly shook his son awake, who groggily opened his eyes and gazed about as if confused, then seeming to remember what happened that morning with Lord Pendleton. "Pendleton's an ass." Axton pointed out.
"Wow, with that observation, I bet the Academy of Natural philosophy would INVITE you to go there." Corvo replied as Axton sat up and rolled his eyes. "Rephrase. You and Pendleton are an ass."
"Aaaand he's back." Corvo responded with a smile as he ruffled Axton's hair.
"Thank you, I was looking for a new hairstyle anyways."
"For the party?"
"Well yeah!"
Corvo laughed. "Well, if that's the case then here."
He grabbed Axton in a neck-lock and started to rub Axton's hair and make it crazier. He protested playfully and started punching Corvo to let him go but the father was adamant at finishing what he had started. He then finally let go and produced his metal mask so Axton can see his reflection.
"See? Beautiful!" He declared as Axton looked into his reflection. "I stand corrected, you're a ROYAL ass."
"No, that's just you." Corvo replied.
"Fine, then a Royal Ass Protector."
"Done that too."
Axton rolled his eyes and chuckled, shaking his head. "I love you dad."
Corvo smiled and pulled his son in for a hug. "I love you too. Oh, and by the way, I basically said to the Void with keeping my powers hidden and may have used my magic to com here in front of the infamous three and Piero."
"Wow, hopefully they don't try to kill you now."
Corvo just shrugged. "They probably won't. They still need me to take care of some things, and even then if they are sincerely loyal to Jessamine then they won't even try to hurt me."
"Let's hope you are right..."
"Come on, we need to prepare for a party."
Axton raised an eyebrow. "What do we need?"
"You know, the usual party necessities. Knives, crossbows, guns, sleep-darts, other assortments of deadly weapons. The works."
"Don't forget the bombs." Axton mentioned.
"Ah yes! Those are the most important thing to bring!"
"What type of parties do you two attend?" Martin's voice called from beneath them. "Because I'd like to attend one of those sometime."
They peeked over the side. The Overseer smiled up at them and waved. "Havelock had mentioned that if you want to arrive at some reasonable time, then to leave soon. And that Pendleton knows the Boyles quite well. If you know what I mean."
And with that said, Martin walked away. Axton frowned and turned to Corvo. "If we're going to question Pendleton, can we change the we to you? I might kill him the next time I see him..."
"Unfortunately, I might too, but if it will help with the mission, then I will."
"And... um... I dreamed of the Outsider last night." Axton said sheepishly. Corvo lifted an eyebrow as he listened to his son. "He told me that I had a power that even he doesn't quite understand. And that I should experiment and... well..."
"You want to use it on me. It's not going to propel me off this tower, is it?"
"I don't think so, the name he gave it sounds harmless enough. Tagging."
"Tagging? Like the kid's game?" He asked.
Axton just shrugged. "I don't know, I used it on Emily though and so far, I just know that it helps me find someone from anywhere..."
"Hmmm... can be useful, alright." Corvo replied. He then pulled out an unused rune and handed it to his son. "Perhaps this will help?"
Axton nodded and waved his hand over it. His mark started to glow as three visions swam before his eyes. One was him in Daud's office, he was pouring over some pictures of contracts then picked up one. A woman with a nasty look on her face. He touched the picture on her collarbone and the mark formed on it. It then shifted to him running on rooftops, using his mark as a honing device, glancing down as the woman from the picture ran for her life. He then launched off and brought his blade down. Then that vision went blank.
The other was a picture of him on a roof again, with Whalers around him. One on the far side touched the mark on his hand and Axton heard his voice in his head. "Orders sir?"
"Send them screaming to the Void." Axton responded, not uttering a single word except mentally. The Whaler let go of his mark and they all jumped down, him assuming that they where going to kill whoever it was.
Then the final vision was of Axton at a party. He flung his wrist out and the mark attached it's self to a noble woman who was giving idle chat. He kept to the shadows as his hand moved like he was getting ready for a possession. Instead, thoughts started entering his mind. Her opinions of the party, of the people, and of her life in general. He then swiped his hand away and it seemed to rip the mark off of her. And she seemed to have hardly noticed a thing.
Then the rune crumbled in his grasps and the wind whisked it away. He turned to Corvo and said. "Were is a place where you can touch the mark casually without attracting attention?"
Corvo then frowned and folded his arms, not in an angry or annoyed way, but like he was about to get intrigued in a conversation or admiring a piece of art. He felt where his hands naturally fell, which where on his lower biceps. he tapped it twice and removed his hand. Axton then grabbed his arm and closed his eyes. His mark began to glow and Corvo winced uncomfortably, but when it was done, he pulled back his sleeve to reveal the mark.
"Touch it, and try thinking something you know that I don't know." He said, sitting down and staring at his father. He did as Axton requested, "My elder sister's name is Beatrici."
"You had an older sister? Wow, I had no idea!" Axton asked mentally. Corvo's eyes went wide as he let go of the tag.
"And I can't contact you mentally again. Unless you touch the tag..."
"That's a useful power, and you also said it can help you find anyone? Anywhere?" Axton nodded. He lifted his hand towards Corvo's marked spot and saw as the back of his hand began to glow. He then moved it slightly off and it stopped. He then pointed it towards the Hound Pit's Pub, moving his hand around until it brightened again, Axton faintly seeing a blue Outline of Emily sitting at a table, reading.
"One more thing, I wan't to be sure that this can go two ways. I am going to turn my back and you are going to touch your mark when I least expect it. Then I will."
"Corvo nods as Axton turned away. He waited a little bit until he grabbed his arm. Axton felt a strange, tingly sensation on his mark as it began to glow faintly. It was almost like only his marked arm was falling asleep. He then touched it and he felt as Corvo and his mind once again touched. They canceled the touch. Corvo then turned his back and waited. Axton took a little longer than Corvo, just to be sure he wasn't prepared for the same amount of time. He saw as his hand twitched to his arm immediately, the he grabbed it and, again, the connection touched.
"Well, at least now we know we can contact each other..."
"But let's try it at a longer distance. Go talk to Pendleton, I will be listening I guess."
Corvo nodded and blinked away. He started looking for Lord Pendleton and found him inside the kennels still.
"Oh, hello Corvo. Is Axton around? I wish to apologize for my behavior earlier. It was uncalled for..."
At this time, Corvo had crossed his arms in the way that made his hand touch the tag and Axton felt the tingle again. He tried clenching his fist as if to do a blink, and that seemed to have worked as well, for he was hearing as Pendleton said "-apologize for my behavior earlier. It was uncalled for..."
"Tell him that I probably won't forgive him anyways." Axton said.
Corvo repeated his words to Lord Pendleton who frowned with an annoyed look on his face.
"Well, if he doesn't then he's a stupid, immature... sorry Corvo, I know he's your son. He's just annoying."
"Right, anyways, Martin said you might know something that can help us." Corvo said as he shifted his weight from one foot to the other.
"Yes, of course. I can tell you safely that I believe that the Boyle who is seeing the Lord Regent and funding his campaigns is Waverly. She's always been a the more serious of the two, but the way I hear it, she's grown more paranoid by the day. She thinks someone is after her, and if my suspicions are true, then there really is someone after her. She tends to like to wear red and will most likely be wary. Her sister Lydia likes music while Esma is more... how do I say this... promiscuous. I have no idea how they are going to look tonight but all this I am almost positively certain. I still recommend snooping around in their bedrooms. Perhaps you'll find a note or diary that can confirm my suspicion. Again, what I am saying is primarily based off rumor and speculation... but the sources are good, great even. Oh, and please deliver this letter to Lord Shaw for me. He is wearing a wolf mask and shouldn't be hard to find. In fact, he might actually be looking for me."
"Get all that Axton?"
"Got it!"
"Okay, thank you Pendleton." Corvo replied as he released his arms, breaking the mental contact with Axton. The son stood and blinked to the boat in where Samuel Beechworth sat, waiting. A few seconds later, the father appeared and placed an arm around his son as they came towards the boat.
"The Boyle costume ball, eh? That'll be fun. But not for everybody. You guys ready?"
"Yeah." Corvo said, turning to Axton. "Let's go to a party."
OOOOOOOOOOOO! My FAVROITE mission in Dishonored! Sorry for this filler, but I thought I needed to clarify this awesome power of Axton's. It was just going to be a tracking spell he found by mistake and all, then I liked the thought of making it a personalized power to him. One that he, and he alone, has. I think it's useful and cool. How useful... well... you'll just have to wait and see don't yeah? 😜
