The Cat That Changed My Life

We meet again my friends! Welcome to my new fanfiction! I am hoping I will be passionate enough about this to actually update and not fail once again. I will state POVs around chapter 4. When it matters. Trust me. And I will fix the cover later. I actually made it myself so give me credit. Here we go!

Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep! The sound of the alarm clock crushes my dreams once again. If I did not live in an orphanage, I would throw as many rocks as I could at the darn thing. Groaning due to the sound, I hit the snooze button and went to face the big day. I changed into the little outfit we were supposed to wear and brushed my pitch black hair into small, thin pigtails. I hated this hairdo, but it really is the only thing that won't get me scolded by the matron, Lady Rin. I groaned again from the simple fatigue of it all and headed downstairs.

"Esmeralda! You are late again!" Lady Rin screamed. 'I try so hard and I get scolded anyways' I thought to myself before replying. "Yes ma'am, sorry ma'am." It came out as more of a statement than an apology only because I have said it so many times in my life. "Whatever. Go eat your breakfast." I went over to find, as always, the "breakfast" was a slice of white bread. It was either this or a slice of toast. Everybody eats it in complete silence before the chores begin.

Today was longer than I expected, we hardly did anything but chores and sit down, being quiet. It was not until I had the chore of doing dishes with my best friend, Miki, when things got weird. "Is it just me or did it feel like time stopped half the way?" I asked her, wiping a plate clean. "I know, right? And to make matters worse, as punishment for accidentally dropping Lady Rin's vase of flowers in mud, I had to sweep out the chimney!" I cringed at what I just heard. I have had chimney sweeping duty more than once in my time, and it is not fun. "Hey Miki, you know how we see all those cool wizards when we are working outside?" I asked her. Miki nodded, well aware of all the magic seen outside. "Imagine if we could become wizards, and be as awesome as them! We can help all the kids back here, too!" I said, green eyes sparkling. "That would be amazing! I might even be able to use water to keep that darn chimney clean!" Miki continued our ideas, blue hair shining in the light. I picked up an ordinary-looking plate from the sink, and saw my school-girl reflection staring back at me. I closed my eyes and sighed. "Not like I could do that much special." I wiped the plate off with my eyes closed. It was never that dirty anyways. "Esmeralda, look!" I opened my eyes to see something I did not expect. The regular white plate had some beautiful green swirls around it now. Not like regular painted swirls, a little bit more like emeralds! "I-I didn't do that! D-did I?" I said, stuttering in awe. One of the few not paper plates we had just transformed into something beautiful.

As if on cue, Lady Rin burst into the room. "What is going on he-" She saw the new design on the plate and gasped in awe. However, her final expression was not joyous. "What did you put on our perfectly good plates, Esmeralda?" she said accusingly. "Emeralds!" Miki said in an effort to protect me. "They are clean and they are pretty, why can't you see that?" "Stay out of this, Miki. I've got this." I said. I was done with everybody being bullied by this witch! "If you don't like it, then fine. I have news for you." I said. A gasp of horror and a gasp of unbelief were heard as I threw the plate to the floor, shattering it and the emeralds to pieces. "We don't like the way you have been treating us. We are not cows or sheep, we are people, just like you." One by one, magic circles appeared behind me, making emeralds the size of the cabinets below the counter and still growing. "I'm not having it anymore." Miki gave me a look as if to say "If you keep going, Lady Rin will surely give you a punishment worse than chimney sweeping!" but I didn't care, because things were getting heated. Literally. From my feet to the tip of my pigtails, I began to be engulfed in green flames. Unfortunately, right when things were about to get good, I felt a lash of pain at my chest, causing me to fall over, the flames disappearing and the emeralds shattering. Miki had a look of terror on her face. It felt like fire the second time. Lady Rin was whipping me. "You are to head straight to your room. There will be no dinner tonight. Now go!" With tears in my eyes, I ran from the kitchen.

The minute I reached my room, I flopped on my bed and burst into tears. They were not tears of pain nor tears of sadness, but tears of pure rage. And since they seem to reflect my emotions, emeralds made vine-like structures around the room. 'At least it looks somewhat nice now.' I thought to myself. I sat on my bed, face all red from crying, when I heard a faint voice in the background. "Are you okay?"I looked around the room to see who it was, and when I reached the window, I found a surprise. A black kitten, with green eyes he same shade of mine, and wings as white as a dove, was talking. To me! "Hi!" she said happily. "A talking cat... With wings..." was all I could bring myself to say. "I know! Weird right?" She flew down to my bed, and seemed to trust me instantly. "So what's your name?" I asked her. "A name? I don't think I have one..." she said, a little embarrassed. "It's fine! I will give you a name!" I said, thinking. She seems really adorable. "I think I will call you Miranda!" The kitten smiled, thinking about the name. "That sounds lovely!" I smiled at her reaction. We both talked for a while. Neither of us knew who our parents were, and have had a bit of an unfair life. "So, if you don't like this place, why don't you just leave?" Miranda asked. "I just might. But since you can fly, can you do something for me?" I asked her. "Everybody should be having dinner right now. Can you fly down to Lady Rin's office and try to find something? That looks like my parents might have given it to me?" Miranda looked me up and down, as if making a pre-check, and nodded! "All right then! Let's go item hunting!" And with that, she flew out the door.

It did not take long for Miranda to return. She held a thick iron bracelet-like structure in her hands. It has a bunch of dragon engravings on it and a lot of emeralds as well. My name was engraved on the rims. "I was a bit unsure at first, but when I saw your name on it, I new it belongs to you." Miranda said. "Thanks, your the best!" I said, grabbing the item. Suddenly, as if a spell was on the thing I just grabbed, memories came flooding in. I had been raised by a dragon! Her name was Emelia, and she taught me everything the orphanage did not.  I was holding an accessory that can be used as a ponytail, a bracelet, or an anklet! The iron came from Metalicana, It was heated up by By Igneel, cooled by Grandina, and engraved with the dragons and emeralds by Emelia herself. After the flashbacks ended, one thing was for sure. I never belonged where I am now. "Miranda, we are running. We are running as far away from this place as we can! I said, jumping out the window. "Hey, wait up!" Miranda said, flying after me.

I didn't know it then, but that was my first step to freedom. To happiness. and most importantly, to Fairy Tail.

Taa-daa! And that is how Esmeralda escaped the horrible place known as her orphanage! I decided to give it a bit of an Annie-like beginning, and then pull a twist! Next up, we will get an insider on Miranda's early years. Also I do not expect to put Miki back in anytime soon. Unless you guys really want me to. Let me know in the comments below! Okay, bye!
