The Oath

Like pressed balloon I am burst

As the desert wander’r I am all thirst

And of this race I am the worst

In the agonizing want of you.

Like fettered jelly my limbs pray shake.

 Minor treble seems earth’s quake

Unable to fully bind or wholly break

 My restless servitude of you.

Fear not the sea, I am the quay

Not night, but wretched day.

 In mediocrity I dismay

The last hopes of clutching you.

No rival but myself did vie

To seek favour in those saintly eyes

But an enemy in me did rise

To vanquish hopes with you.

You had the beauty, but I no strength

To force the time to further lengths

And I did indenture my own flanks

Forbidding retreat to you.

My being whole confounds in awe

To the stolid splendour that I saw

Whose chuckle made sultry guffaw

The moment I fell for you.

The gentle stride of Venus begs

To be prized loft as kingly stag

For conjuring of silk from rags

Was spelled on me by you.

But Venus cursed the man she loved

As all the ignorant heavens above

Know not glover from the glove.

And this I dreaded of you.

How can peasant please the queen

In ways unknown to men so mean?

Will jealously colour princes green

And make them kill for you?

Wield your weapon, know your power.

Draw the sword called forth this hour.

The blade of love in highest tower

Locked for fidelity of you.

In visage you are deified to all

From mighty Caesar to dreary Gaul.

Unhinge thine back, erect and tall.

The world waits for you.

But pleasant mind brought you to me,

Seeking shelter and moment’s harmony.

Please forget my humble tranquility.

I am no equal to you.

In all but words I am destitute

Without cause or institute.

Only a cynic prostitute

In comparison to you.

Thus I bend my knee and shan’t sway.

Flesh white what was painted grey.

And behold the miraculous day

I choose to give my heart away.
