Burning Bridges

The fire sweeps away our love,

With the finesse of a dove,

Whose wings, unclipped do but fly,

Unto the day I wish to die.

A river between us does stand,

It's seething waters you do command.

I cannot try but bridge the gap,

And struggle vainly beneath your strap.

My head falls under like a stone,

I lie frozen, to the bone.

My heart stops thumping tender beats,

But throttles in my chest of meat.

Drowning, I cry, I cannot swim,

Feeling my fate is growing grim.

You watch with idle satisfaction,

Able to aid, but make not action.

The bridge is burnt, it lies uncrossed

The river's depths it's ugly gloss.

It yearns for me with love I feel

That from your heart I could not steal.

On your side, you sit alone,

Like a flower on the mountain grown.

The burning bridge, the waters scorch.

I look and see you hold the torch.
