PROLOGUE
The only things on Pete's mind as he walks into the seemingly normal looking school are the tears streaming down his mother's cheeks, the hard line his father's lips were pressed into, and the giggling of his baby twin brother and sister - Andrew and Hillary, who are only a year old come December - when he left them all to climb on the train. There's probably nowhere he'd rather be less than right here.
"Right this way." The principal smiles at him as they walk together. Pete has a duffle bag on his shoulder full of the clothes he can only wear on the weekend. "I'll take you your class where you will be assigned a partner. He or she will take you to your room, where you will find five uniforms. Pick one for today, and put it on. Wear the other ones on the weekdays. Laundry day is Sunday for your dormitory."
Pete nods, but he knows he'll have to ask someone later what day he can do laundry is again because of all of the things getting thrown at him right now. They enter the classroom, interrupting a man probably in his mid thirties.
All eyes are glued to Pete as the teacher says, "Principal Rodgers, what a pleasant surprise. And who do we have here?" The man seems genuine as he smiles at Pete, making sure to look him in the eyes like he really cares. As if.
"Mr. Wells, this is Peter Wentz. Peter, this is Mr. Gavin Wells, your homeroom teacher." Principal Rodgers smiles at Pete, nudging him forward.
"Nice to meet you, sir." Pete says, shifting his weight from foot to foot. Mr. Wells shakes Pete's hand and waves a goodbye to the principal as he leaves.
"Okay, Pete - is it okay if I call you that?" Mr. Wells pauses, searching Pete's face for any indications that he should call him by his full name.
Pete smiles in response, nodding. "I'd rather you did, sir. Thank you." He gets a warm smile in reply as he turns back to the class he was previously teaching.
"There is only one boy without a partner here." He murmurs to himself, biting his lip as if he doesn't want to put Pete with the partner-less mystery guy with the empty seat next to him. "Mr. Hurley, raise your hand."
"I already have a partner, sir." A tattooed boy in the back speaks, looking to his right to see a boy with a stone cold face just staring at Pete, who becomes flushed under his gaze. "Patrick is the one without a partner. Joe has been my partner since the ninth grade."
"I didn't ask that, Andrew." The teacher says calmly. "Raise your hand." With a flick of Mr. Wells' wrist, Andrew's hand goes straight in the air. "Pete, Andy will show you to your room when the bell rings. Take a seat next to Mr. Stump, the boy with the vibrant red hair."
Pete does as told, feeling all eyes on him as he walks slowly to his seat and sinks down into it. The eyes of Stump continue to burn into Pete long after everyone has gotten back to their work and class has resumed.
"Do you have a staring problem?" Pete whispers, taking a chance and looking at the boy. His piercing blue eyes with flecks of gold narrow back at Pete, showing just a hint of a fiery red colour that matches his hair.
The boy doesn't answer, instead tilting his head as if he didn't understand the question, his full bottom lip trapped between his teeth. Pete starts to repeat himself, but the bell rings, and Stump is up and out of his seat in record time, the first one out of the room.
"Come on, Rookie. Joe and I will show you to your room." Andy looms over him where he sits, a boy a few inches taller than Andy standing behind him. "I said, 'Come on, Rookie.'" Andy grabs Pete's wrist and hauls him up.
From being so close to Andy, Pete can get a better look at his tattoos, which are all somewhere around a greenish colour. He begins to ask, but Andy pushes him forward.
"You're going to make us late to our next class. Patrick will burn us alive." Joe - the boy behind Andy - says to clarify why Andy is being so pushy. Pete walks in between Joe and Andy down the hall and looks at the first's tattoos - which are somewhat colourful but mostly black and white.
"What.. why are all of his tattoos colourful and all of yours are black and white?" Pete asks and the colours of the tattoos could just be a coincidence, but from the way Joe's eyebrows raise, Pete can tell it isn't.
"You haven't been asked what form of power restraints you want yet?" Joe seems confused when Pete shakes his head. "You can do piercings, tattoos, rings, necklaces, masks, anything you want basically. Andy and I met at the tattoo station two years ago and decided to become partners." Joe explains quietly, slipping one of his sleeves up to reveal even more tattoos.
"Why do you and Andy have so many?" Pete wonders aloud as they continue to walk. Andy stops abruptly at Pete's question, a cold stare on his face.
"We're part of the most powerful group. Joe, Patrick, and I are the only three members of The Elements to exist. I control Earth, Joe controls Air, and Patrick controls Fire. We haven't yet found the fourth member, who controls water." Andy says, looking at Pete as if he's unimpressed. "And unless you can summon a hurricane from a drop of water, I guess there is no fourth member."
"Oh. Nope, I can't do that." Pete says, scratching the back of his head. Andy snorts and continues walking, stopping in front of a single room.
"You'll be here until you find someone that wants to be your roommate. Which might be a while. Welcome to Room 317, Rookie. I would say enjoy your stay, but you probably won't." Andy opens the unlocked door, stepping aside to let Pete in. "After you get dressed, report to Principal Rodgers office to get your class schedule and power restraints. That is, if you possess a power strong enough to require power restraints. If you need something, don't ask us."
Andy leaves Pete with an eye roll as he walks off. Joe stands there for a few seconds before Andy yells, "Joseph!"
"Coming, honey!" Joe yells back, jogging off. He sticks his head back in at the last second to say, "See you?"
"Yeah, yeah, okay." Pete says after a few seconds, smiling at the curly headed boy before the latter runs off.
Pete changes into a pair of khakis, a yellow button up, and a cardigan with the Ace Academy double A logo over his heart. He runs a hand through his messy hair and trudges to the principal's office.
When he reaches there, the only student present is the boy from earlier. Stump. "How may I help you?" The secretary asks before he can talk to the boy.
"I'm here to get my class schedule and power restraints." Pete replies, and the lady concentrates her eyes on his door for a second before nodding.
"Go on in. The principal doesn't have anyone in his office at the moment." She smiles, looking at Pete again. Pete nods, knocking twice and entering.
Principal Rodgers smiles when he sees Pete, gesturing for him to sit down. "I suppose you need your schedule and restraints."
"Yes, sir, please." Pete says politely, pulling the lapels of his cardigan together, strangely cold now that he's in the office with the door closed.
"Your ability is one of the most dangerous and powerful of all. You will be joining Andy Hurley, Joe Trohman, and Patrick Stump in the group of The Elements." Principal Rodgers says, smiling as he claps his hands together. "Now, Pete, what will your power restraints be?"
