Chapter Five: Fly Away

God, I'll never get the hang of this driving thing... the horn blared and Cat lifted her head from the wheel after slamming her head down on it in exasperation. Subconsciously, Cat's foot wandered the driver's rug until it pressed ever so slightly upon the gas pedal. The car lurched forward and slammed the hood of the car into a telephone pole.

Crap... Cat climbed out of the car and walked around to the hood. Smoke billowed in her face as she approached the detonated car hood. Rubbing her temples, she swung her foot at the wheel, hitting it sharply. With a loud pop, the tire exploded, Cat jumped back in surprise.

God, I had better come up with something before someone notices me... the avenue was barren and unquenched of civilians or mowed grass. Cat didn't know where she was walking to but she began walking towards the airport, even though she knew she would miss her flight. Cat suspected it would be a while until anybody happened upon the avenue.

She caught a glint in the corner of her eye. She approached it to find a blue bike. It was in decent condition if you did not consider the fact that rust coated the underbelly of the bars and the seat was torn. Cat grabbed the handles of the bike and looked around her, no one was watching, and the decaying pink house that the bike belonged to appeared to have been abandoned for years.

Cat hopped on the bike and kicked back the kickstand. The bike's tires were fine and the rubber handles still had most of their grip. Despite the tear in the seat, the cushion was particularly cozy. Cat turned the pedal and the bike bounced through the grass and jumped the curb.

No one was around for miles so she was able to bike swiftly without care to the airport on 96th. Cat dropped her bike on the sidewalk that ran along the airport.

"Thank you," she whispered under her breath to the old bike, its tire still spinning on the axle.

Xandra had always criticized Cat for speaking to inanimate objects. Calling her crazy and warning her to act more like Tally. Perfect, perfect Tally. Cat gazed down Sierra Street, thinking about what she was leaving behind. If she left, she would no longer have to suffer the constant reminder that she wasn't good enough.

Cat's gaze turned to the Abraham Airport. If she went away then she would have to make it on her own.

Cat kicked a stone along the cement sidewalk and checked her phone. Clicking it off she realized she was too far along in her expedition to turn back. Besides, Xandra and Tally would kill her if she came back with the moving Justice temple destroyed.

Cat sprinted towards the airport with her light luggage swing back and forth on her back in her father's old knapsack. It was a couple hours until her flight as she sat with her hands dangling between her legs clinging to the knapsack strap. Her passport was hidden in her back pocket and the sharp edge pressed against her skin as she sat. The passport had been purchased last year when Xandra, Tally, and Cat took a trip to Africa.

Xandra had planned on her and Tally just going, but their neighbor, Lee Ann had gotten herself so gleeful at the knowledge that our entire dysfunctional family was going somewhere together. Lee Ann is a master at sticking her nose in other people's business and Xandra may not be so smart but she knew that Lee Ann would never let her hear the end of it if she didn't bring Cat along.

Cat enjoyed the trip even though she was forced to sit in tha back of the car as they took safaris.

After making it past airport security an paying for her luggage, Cat made her way onto the plane. She was seated in the far back, apparently, the company didn't have the decency to give her a good seat.

She was seated in the inside seat next to a sliver of a window. No one sat beside her.

The plane took of in a sullen way. Faster, faste, Cat's hart ran rampid, beating like a drum. Sweat beads amounted on forhead and collected in the crevices of her skin.

Here we go.
