Chapter 7
(Rainkit's POV)
Rainkit stared across the river, eyes wide and shuffled closer to his father, pressing closely against his fur, feeling dwarfed by the vastness of the river. He'd only heard about the river that TorrentClan hunted in, but never realised the enormity of it until today. His father had decided it would be better for Rainkit to take a look at TorrentClan's territory before he was apprenticed.
His father's voice awoke him from his trance,
"What are those cats doing?" Cavestar asked, his tail flicking towards a few shadowy figures swimming across the channel separating the BreezeClan and MistClan territory.
Rainkit squinted slightly, barely making out the figures, let alone know which one was Umbrastar as his father continuing to speak,
"I think their MistClan cats, son, they're swimming from the MistClan side of the border, after all."
Rainkit nodded along, not really understanding why MistClan would raid others,
"Why would they do that?"
Cavestar shrugged slightly, but Rainkit could see that worry was clearly evident on his face.
"I'm not too sure. But knowing Umbrastar, she's not the type to attack others without a valid reason," Cavestar meowed, tone tense, Rainkit feeling his father's tail rest on her back, as if trying to reassure him
"We should go tell your mother and the clan. They need to know about this," Cavestar continued after a lengthy pause.
Rainpaw quickly followed his father, his short steps quickening to match his father's long strides. He panted slightly as they trudged through the marshlands, his paws sinking through with every step.
By the time Rainpaw finally arrived at camp, Cavestar, Featherstar and his elder sister, Crown Heir Mountainmist, were already perched on the High-log. His parents looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to join them so they could begin whatever announcement they had in mind, most likely about MistClan raiding BreezeClan.
"Attention TorrentClan! Please gather for a clan meeting!" Featherstar yowled, her voice travelling across the entire camp.
Rainkit puffed out his chest as he watched cats from dens pour out to stand below him. It honestly was just quite nice to be more than a head taller than everyone, especially when he usually was the one lifting his head and trying not to get squashed under everyone's paws.
"Today, while I was exploring we saw a couple of MistClan cats trespassing on BreezeClan's border. We believe that they must be considering to raid BreezeClan's moors. Therefore, we must make sure that more of them aren't trying to raid our territory," Cavestar announced, standing firmly on the log.
When he stopped for a pause, the clan's muttering rose, some angrier than others.
"I always knew Umbrastar was a jerk!" hissed a dark grey tom from the corner.
"This would've never happened in my day!" another cat growled.
"Silence!" Featherstar yowled, her voice alone cutting everyone else's in half.
Featherstar took over, taking a step forwards,
"We shall arrange some patrols. Tidecrash, Darkwater and Oceanshroud will patrol the Mistclan border. Stoneheart, Tigerdawn and Blackspot will take the Oakclan border. I, Ripplespash, Breezesong, Bubblestream and Stoneheart will sneak onto the outskirts of BreezeClan's border to try find out why Umbrastar's invading."
Rainkit huffed in impatience and annoyance. Why wasn't he chosen to join a patrol? He was nearly an apprentice and knew everything there was to be a warrior. By this point he should've been assigned a patrol to lead. Dejected, he started making his way back to the Nursery, however, heard the apprentices talking in hushed tones in their den.
"We should join them!" he heard Plumpaw exclaim quietly.
"I'm coming," Rainkit butted in, sticking his muzzle into the apprentices' den.
"You're only a kit! It's much too dangerous for you!" Leafpaw's muzzle scrunched up in distaste, probably because she didn't want to drag a kit along.
"I'm an Heir. By the Code, you are required to do whatever I ask," Rainpaw merely sniffed, tilting his muzzle higher into the air.
The apprentices grumbled amongst themselves but ultimately allowed him to tag along. They didn't go far, much to Rainpaw's disappointment. They hid in a thick tangle of bushes beside the river that separated the MistClan and TorrentClan border and waited to see if any chaos would unfold.
It seemed that Tidecrash had accidentally led his patrol too far and was now on MistClan land. Unfortunately for them, they bumped into a MistClan patrol who were definitely not pleased to see them.
"It was an accident!" Tidecrash protested.
"That sounds fishy coming from you, fox-dung!" snarled a slim she-cat, scars littering her pelt. Rainkit shuddered. Now he saw why MistClan cats were so scary, they had such a still demeanour, none of them even twitching a whisker as they watched their patrol leader face the TorrentClan cats.
"Say that again!" Oceanshroud growled, tail swishing in anger.
"Fox-dung!" the she-cat giggled, almost as if she wanted a battle to commence and Rainkit flinched. He wondered if the MistClan cats were mentally sane, their emotions seemed to change without a moment's notice.
Oceanshroud, now patience completely run out, leaped at the scar-littered she-cat and locked her in a tight grip, who screeched in rage and ran an unsheathed paw down the side of his face. He let her go and teetered backwards and yowled in pain,
"My eye! I can't see! What have you demonic cats done to it!"
The brown and white she-cat merely snickered, licked her bloody paw and replied,
"I say you should watch your words from now on."
