Chapter 14

Gracie Weiss- Los Angeles, California

11:55 pm PST

Gracie bit back a small sigh of relief and closed her front door behind her while she kicked off her shoes. Her whole body instantly relaxed because she knew that she was safe, especially since she was able to lock the door and lock the world out for a little while.

"Oh, thank Gods," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She cleared her throat and licked her lips before she started to walk to her kitchen so that she could place the food in her microwave before she took a much needed shower. "Why people decide to mess up a bathroom like that, I have no idea and hope that they won't do it again."

Gracie bit back an annoyed groan and shook her head before she placed her food in the microwave so that it would stay safe while she took her shower. A tired sigh escaped her lips before she moved a hand through her hair and across her face, shaking her head.

She started to walk to her bathroom, and she let her mind wander back to what had happened after she had tossed the big bag into the dumpster using her "powers" and wondered if someone was there and saw her do it.

Could someone have seen me do that? she silently wondered and bit the inside of her lip while she furrowed her brows. Her whole body grew tense, and she looked around as if she thought someone had made it into her little apartment without her knowledge. Oh, please, make sure that no one has seen me do that because I do not know how I can explain that to them.

Gracie sighed and shook her head before she walked the rest of the way to her small bathroom where she had placed a towel and her night clothes before she had left for work, and her whole body grew further relaxed while her shoulders sagged with relief.

She opened the bathroom door and walked into it before she closed and locked the door, and another sigh of relief escaped her lips while she tucked her head closer to her chest because she knew that she was safe.

For now...

Gracie quickly took the rest of her clothes off of her body, and the hair on the back of her neck stood at attention when the rest of her body was met with cold air. "Ooh, I can't wait for a nice hot shower before I go to bed and sleep the rest of the night away," she said and leaned her head back toward the sky with a small groan of annoyance. "I can't wait for that at all."

But why did that feel as if it was not going to happen at all..?

A small shiver went down her spine, and she bit the inside of her lip, silently praying that what she was thinking was not the case, for she had no idea what to do if it was.

Maybe she could just run and hide somewhere else to escape the feelings that she was feeling...

It wouldn't have been the first time that she had to quickly leave somewhere and hide in a different place for a while, especially because of the powers she possessed and had someone see them when they weren't supposed to.

Gracie shook her head as soon as her mind wandered toward everything that had happened during her past, and she instantly bit the inside of her lip harder, tasting blood. She looked around her small bathroom, and her heart ached and became filled with pain because she didn't want to leave this place and the life she had created for herself.

She turned on the shower and bit back a tired sigh before she moved a hand through her hair and across her face.

The young female shook her head and pursed her lips in annoyance before she stuck her hand under the water, waiting for it to warm up so that she could take a quick shower and go to bed.

Unless the person, or thing, decided to appear before she was able to go to her room, go to bed, and fall asleep.

Gracie bit back a tired sigh and shook her head, taking her hand out of the water when it was warm enough for her. "Oh, thank Gods," she said, her voice barely above a whisper before she shook her head. "Now, I can take a shower and get ready for bed."

She got into the tub and walked underneath the water before she started to take a quick shower, and a small sigh of relief escaped her tight lips while she did so. Her whole body started to relax while she was under the stream of water.

However, anxiety started to set in while she continued to take her shower, and she couldn't help but start to shower faster while her mouth grew dry. Her heart skipped a beat before it started to pound harder and faster in her chest while she gulped.

After a while, she finished her shower and quickly got dressed in her night clothes while a shiver went down her spine, and she shuddered as if cold.

It was time...

Gracie moved a towel through her hair and furrowed her brows when she felt something, or someone, outside her bathroom door. Her whole body was tense, and she couldn't help but become nervous, not knowing what to expect or how to prepare for it.

How did they get inside her house when she had locked the door..?

Gracie hesitated and grabbed the towel tighter in her hands. "Hello?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper while she placed her hand on the bathroom door handle. "Is anyone out there? If so, why? How did you get into my apartment when the door is locked?"

Nothing, only silence.

Gracie's heart skipped a beat before it started to pound hard and fast in her chest. She hesitated before she opened the door to see two men sitting in her living room and then another man standing at the front door with his back toward them and hands placed behind his back and clasped together.

And unfortunately, she instantly knew that back anywhere...

Her heart stopped beating, and her mouth seemed to grow dry while she stared at the man's back, silently praying that what she thought wasn't true and that she wasn't face to back with the man that she trusted and worked for.

Maybe she should have run when she had the chance...

No one said a word and broke the tense silence that had fallen on them.

The two men on the couch were quiet and started to look increasingly nervous while the one near the front door stood at attention with his back tense, and he stood as still as a statue as if he was afraid of what Gracie was about to discover and had discovered.

Gracie was the first to stir and cleared her throat to break the tense silence while she shifted on her feet. Her heart pounded hard and fast in her chest while she stared at him, and a wave of emotion washed over while fear nipped at her heels. "Jim?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper, and she knew that he heard her when his whole body seemed to grow tenser.

He took a deep breath and released it with a small shaky whoosh, but he didn't turn around or move toward her. A shiver went down his spine, and she bit back a small gulp while she stared at him.

"Jim?" she asked again, and her voice cracked when she spoke. She cleared her throat and shifted on her feet before she took another hesitant step into the room, grabbing the towel harder in her hands. "Jim, is that you?"

Doubt settled on her like a thick blanket when he didn't say anything or turn to look at her, and she couldn't help but start to wonder if it was actually him or someone else, someone else who had the same hairline and had the same clothes on that she had seen him in only thirty minutes ago.

"Jim?" Gracie asked in her normal speaking tone, and she couldn't help but start to grow hesitant while she looked at the man that had helped her for the past couple of years she had lived here. She frowned and furrowed her brows while she studied him before she cocked her head to the side. "Please, is that you? What's going on here? Why are you here, and who are they?" She gestured toward the two men that were seated in her living room, and they instantly bowed and submitted to her, for some reason.

The young female gulped and bit the inside of her lip. "Please, what's going on? Why are you facing away from me?" She paused and tucked her head closer to her chest when a thought entered her mind, and she couldn't help but cringe in guilt. "Did I do something wrong? Are you kicking me out of this place and sending me away from here?" Her voice was barely above a whisper when she asked that. "Am I homeless and without a job again? Is that what is happening now?"

The male before her chuckled sadly and shook his head. "No," he said, his voice barely above a whisper and cracking while he turned to look at her, and tears filled his eyes, earning a small gulp from the female because she had no idea why he was starting to cry. "But that doesn't mean we don't have to talk."

Jim cleared his throat and licked his lips, gesturing to the other chair in the room where no one sat. "So, go ahead and sit down, Gracie," he said, his voice barely above a whisper while he tucked his head closer to his chest and smiled sadly. "This won't take long, I promise."
