Chapter 5: On The Other Side
Jacquelyn's eyes widened at her best friend's words. She observed her surroundings too and realized Alianor was right. They were in North Luxia.
Long before, the forest was termed "The North" and the villages and towns "The South". When they were separated by Caine, the name for the places stuck.
It looked a bit different from what she thought. For one, the trees looked a bit bigger and taller. She was surprised she didn't see them all over the wall on their side of the force field.
The realization had hit her, and she quickly turned in the direction her best friend was still staring. A tall thick wall stood before them. It looked exactly like the wall on the other side. Caine must have built one here too. Right behind the wall, just a few inches away, was the thin lavender wall. She had never been this close to it, she made it an effort to never get near it, and stayed behind when Alianor dared to. It looked more opaque and wavy up close.
They stood there and stared.
"I can't believe we're on the other side" Jacquelyn finally said
"I know" Alianor agreed
They both turned and looked at the trees.
"What do we do now?" Jacquelyn asked looking in between the trees, trying to find any indication of movement
"We can go find someone and tell them what's going on" Alianor suggested, thinking there had to be people around
"It doesn't look like people live here" Jacquelyn pointed out
Alianor sighed, her best friend was right. The only sign of life was trees and more trees. Maybe the people who were banished died out. Maybe some horrid creature attacked and killed them all. They wouldn't know, they never communicated with the Northside before.
But they had to do something, they couldn't just stand there staring at the trees. There had to be someone who could help them.
"Let's just go, maybe we'll find someone," Alianor said
"Which way do we go?" Jacquelyn asked
Alianor looked through the trees, hoping for some hint. She wished there was a sign that said "This way to people". She walked across the plain and towards what looked like a wall of trees. Maybe she'd come across some path that would lead them somewhere. To her relief, she did. On the ground between the trees and shrubs, she saw a path made through the sparse grass. She followed the path with her eyes, hoping to see where it lead, but all she could see was more trees and then darkness due to the gloomy environment.
"I guess this is our best bet," she said to her best friend who was standing behind her
They were about to step on the path when something caught Jacquelyn's eyes.
"What's that?" she asked
"What?" Alianor asked looking around frantically
"That twinkling light thing. Right there" she described, pointing to the front of them
In front of them, in the darkness of the trees, a small light could be seen.
"It's probably a firefly"
But there was something off about this firefly. It didn't fly around wildly like a normal firefly, it kept steady like it was flying in a straight line.
"I don't think that's a firefly," Jacquelyn said
The two stood there, staring at the glowing light coming towards them. As it came closer, and away from the darkness, a silhouette could be seen around the light.
"It's a person" Jacquelyn whispered in a panic
As the person got closer, they could tell it was a woman and the light was coming from a necklace. Her features revealed itself as she got closer, and it was then that they noticed her eyes were glued on them.
"She's looking at us" Jacquelyn hissed "What do we do?"
Alianor studied the young woman walking towards them. She didn't look like she was going to hurt them. Actually, she looked sort of shocked and excited to see them.
"I don't know," Alianor said answering the question
They stepped away from the path as she got closer. Soon, they were again in front of the door they had just stepped out of, and the young woman was now in the plain, in front of them. She opened a book that was in her hand, and then looked back up at them, specifically Jacquelyn.
"It's you," she said to Jacquelyn "It's really you"
"Uh...I guess" Jacquelyn nervously answered
"You're Zoricus' descendant," the woman said
The girls' eyes widened in surprise.
"How'd you know that?" Jacquelyn asked
The young woman in front of them quickly turned the book in her hand and held it up towards them.
Jacquelyn's eyes widened as she saw a drawing of her magenta cloak, her mother's cloak. The person wearing it had short blonde hair, just like her. Under it was writing, they weren't close enough to read what it said.
"It says 'Descendant of the Wind guardian'" the woman said noticing their straining eyes
The girls felt confusion, how would whoever wrote the book know that?
More confusion got etched into their faces as the book once again caught their attention. A blank spot on the page began to gain color, and soon, they realized that another drawing and words, were starting to appear. Their faces then brightened in awe and shock as the image was complete.
Alianor placed her hands into her pocket that was neatly hidden in the folds of her dress, and she pulled out her grandmother's poetry book.
The young woman noticed their expressions and quickly turned the book back towards her. A new image had appeared on the page, it was a drawing of a book. She looked up and saw that it was the same book Alianor held in her hands, down to the initials on the front.
"Descendant of the Water guardian" she read out loud before looking up at the girls
Seeing their reactions, she knew that the book had identified another descendant.
"Who are you?" Alianor asked shoving her book back into her pocket
"And what kind of evil sorcery is that?" Jacquelyn added, her eyes squinting suspiciously at the book
"I'm Morgaine" the young woman answered
"And WHAT are you Morgaine?" The young blonde asked, her eyes still squinted in suspicion
She hesitated before answering "I'm the Sun Queen"
Confusion was once again on their faces. Wasn't the Sun Queen dead? Plus the woman in front the looked young, and nothing like the statue in the town square or the painting in Alistair's shop.
"You're the Sun Queen?" Jacquelyn asked, disbelief in her voice
"Yes" Morgaine answered "Well, not the original Sun Queen, the new one"
"The new one?" Alianor asked
Jacquelyn was beginning to think the Morgaine was crazy.
"Yes, the new one. The Sun Queen's powers were passed on to me"
Jacquelyn was convinced, Morgaine was crazy. And that book was evil.
"Passed on to you?" Alianor asked
"Do you know what the Sun Queen said before she died?" Morgaine asked
"We know that she told the King that our kingdom will be restored to its former glory" Alianor answered
"Well, that's not all she said" Morgaine began, "She told my great great grandfather that the new Sun Queen will come from his bloodline. Today, I found out it was me"
"Who's your great great grandfather?" Alianor asked
"Merek" she answered
The girls' eyes brightened at the name.
"He was the guardians' mentor" Alianor stated
"So you know about him?"
"Yes, our grandfathers told us about him," Alianor said
She recalled the many stories her grandfather told her about how wise their mentor was and how much they trusted him. Alianor looked at Morgaine if she was the Sun Queen and Merek's family, she could be trusted, right?
"I'm Alianor" she introduced herself "And this is Jacquelyn" she pointed to her best friend
Jacquelyn slapped her arm "What are you doing?" she hissed "Don't tell her our names"
"Why?" Alianor hissed back, rubbing the stinging spot on her arm
"Because she's crazy" she answered
Jacquelyn still wasn't convinced Morgaine had any sanity in her.
"You know I can hear you right?" Morgaine said
Jacquelyn's head snapped towards her, her eyes squinting again. She wasn't ready to trust her just yet.
"Sorry," Alianor said, apologizing for her friend's behavior, it was something she had to do a lot
"It's ok," Morgaine said with a tight smile
She looked back down at the book. She couldn't believe she had actually found the descendants of the water and wind guardian. Then it hit her, the water and wing guardians didn't live on her side, so what were these two going here? And how did they get here?
"How did you guys get here?" She asked
"In my grandfather's shop, which was Merek's old shop, there's a secret passage that leads here" Alianor explained
Morgaine peeked behind them and saw an opened door on the ground. She had come close to the shield many times, why hadn't she seen this door before?
"Why did you guys come here?" She asked another question
"We were running away" Alianor answered
"From the freakin' shadow people" Jacquelyn added
Morgaine looked at them lost.
"Caine, he's back" Alianor clarified "He came out of the ground while we were having our Sun festival. He sent out these creepy looking things to capture everyone. Jacquelyn and I were hiding in the shop when we found the passageway and escaped. We had no idea it lead here"
"The book was right," Morgaine said to herself
Everything that was written in the book so far was true.
"What is it with you and this book?" Jacquelyn asked
"And why does it know about us?" Alianor added
Morgaine took a deep breath, this was getting real. It was time for her to be the Sun Queen and tell them what was really going on.
"Before the Sun Queen died, she didn't just tell Merek about me...she told him about you too," Morgaine said
"About us?" Alianor asked pointing to herself and her best friend
"You're officially crazy" Jacquelyn added
"She knew that Caine would return and said that the only people who could destroy him are the descendants of the Guardians. This book, that Merek wrote for me, shows me who the new descendants are and what they need to do to defeat Caine" Morgaine explained
"So you're telling me..." Jacquelyn began, still skeptical "...that we have to defeat Caine? Little ole us?"
"I know this may be hard to believe, but it's true," Morgaine said, "How do you explain the book knowing about your cloak and book?"
"Witchcraft" Jacquelyn shrugged
"Jackie!" Alianor said
"What?" She answered "It could be"
Alianor shook her head before turning to Morgaine.
"What do we do?" She asked
"Are you actually believing her right now?" Jacquelyn asked
The two ignored her.
"We have to find the other new guardians," Morgaine said
"How?"
"Well, the pendant..."
Before she could finish the sentence, she felt the pendant rise from her chest.
"Your necklace is sparkling again" Jacquelyn pointed out, her eyes squinting in suspicion once again "And it's floating too"
Morgaine looked down at the pendant and watched as it began to move around her neck and point in the direction she came from.
"It's trying to choke her" Jacquelyn hissed, "Told you it was evil"
Morgaine turned with the pendant and faced the same direction.
"A descendant" she whispered
She opened the book and looked. At the top of a blank page, a drawing had appeared. It was a broad hair ribbon, green and brown, with a unique 'X' shaped pattern on it.
She smiled to herself, she had seen this ribbon before.
"Ryia" she whispered
