Chapter 34: The Setting of the Moon

Ilda paced back and forth, in front of her old friends.

"What if they're not Ok? What if Caine took their power? What if he transported them over a cliff?" she rambled on

They, along with everyone else, saw Caine vanish along with their grandchildren. They had been gone a while and no one knew where to. They sat around waiting for them to reappear, but Ilda found it hard to sit still not knowing where her grandson was.

"Don't get your undergarments in a knot," Geoffrey said "They'll be fine"

"And how are you so sure?" she asked

"With Henry there, they're bound to defeat Caine" he proudly said

"Henry being there is the exact reason why I'm worried!"

"Oh please, you're just worried Philip will do something and get himself killed!" Geoffrey said walking towards her

The two continued to go at it as their friends watched on.

"I thought they would have stopped all of this arguing after fifty years," Alistair said

"Me too" Zoricus agreed "But it's just as entertaining as it was back then" he added with a chuckle

"That's because you didn't have to deal with it for fifty years," Gawain said "It lost its humour after the first decade"

They shook their heads at the pair, memories of the glory days flashed back in their minds.

"We leave you two for ten minutes and you're already fighting"

Heads shot towards the voice, including those of the fighting pair. Smiles and cheers erupted at the sight in front of them.

The Guardians and Sun Queen stood before them, confident smiles on their faces. Morgaine had her hands on the shoulder of a brooding Caine, his hands bound in vines compliments Ryia.

"Philip!" Ilda said, running towards her grandson and pulling him into a hug "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine grandmother" he answered

"Are you sure?"

"Yes" he assured her, a bit surprised by her worrying, he didn't realize she cared so much

Ilda turned and looked at Caine.

"Not so high and powerful now huh?"

The former moon guardian rolled his eyes, a way of hiding his embarrassment.

King Francis and his son and grandson, who were among the growing crowd around them stepped forward. He looked Caine over, taking in his state. He then raised his hand and two knights quickly appeared at his side.

"Take him into the dungeons" he simply instructed

Morgaine stepped aside allowing the knights to take Caine of her hands.

"The dungeon isn't very accommodating..." Jacquelyn began "...but I'm pretty sure it's better than the shadow realm"

Caine gave her an annoyed look, to which she responded with a grin and wave.

As the knights led him away, cheers arose from the crowd. The Guardians and Sun Queen took it all in. They did it, they actually defeated Caine.

The former guardians joined them, sending congratulations and words of pride their way.

"I did it!" Jacquelyn said running to her grandfather "I kicked Caine's behind"

"That you did," he said before pulling her into a hug "And I'm so proud of you"

"Thank you granddad" she replied tightening her hold on him

It had been just them for a long time and Zoricus worried that he wasn't doing a good job raising a teenager. But at that moment, seeing all that she and her friends did, he knew that he was doing a pretty good job and that his late wife and daughter would be so proud of him.

"Grandpa!" Ryia yelled running to Gawain as he approached her

It was the first time she had seen him after her and the others entered the forbidden forest.

"Ryia!" he said catching her in his arms "You did amazing out there" he added after placing her back on her feet

"Really?"

"Really"

"Ry-Ry!" she heard the loud deep voices approaching them

They turned and found her brothers and parents approaching them. She grinned and ran to them. Her brothers pulled her into a group hug, lifting her off the ground.

"You killed it," Kyros said after the hug

"I know" she grinned proudly

"Of course she" her eldest brother Rodrick Jr said "I mean, she did learn all those axe skills from us"

"True" her other brothers agreed

"Oh please" she said before making her way to her parents and grandmother who had just shown up

As much as their statement annoyed her, they were right, she did learn a lot from them. She loved that the brothers she looked up to were proud of her. She wouldn't admit all that to them though.

Philip watched as Ryia received tight hugs and kisses from her family. He saw the pride on their faces and knew that she appreciated it. But wished that he was the one giving her hugs and kisses and wished that the happiness on her face was because of how proud he was of her. His daydreaming smile was wiped off his face when his eye met Gavin. The young man sent him a glare and he quickly looked away from the family.

"Here comes your mother," his grandmother said pointing to her

He was lucky she hadn't caught him staring. He spotted his mother quickly making her way to him, worry and relief all over her face.

"Thank goodness you're ok," she said pulling him into a tight hug

"A little too tight mother" he said, prompting his mother to quickly let him go

She looked over his body, her brows furrowing at the bruises she saw.

"He didn't bruise you too much did he?"

"No mother"

"Good" she responded before grabbing his cheeks "Your father would be so proud of you"

"You think so?"

"I know so" his grandmother answered, his mother nodded in agreement

He smiled at the thought. This was the first time he felt like his father would really be proud of something he did. It wasn't because he wanted to please his grandmother or because he wanted to please the north, It was because he was doing the right thing.

"I'm so glad this is all over," Alianor said burying her head in her grandfather's chest

"Oh Alianor," he said patting her back soothingly "It wasn't that bad"

She pulled away and looked up at him questioningly. She wondered how could he even say that.

"Yes, it was that bad" she clarified "There was an old dangerous bridge and a cliff I could have fallen to my death from. And there were mountain lions, dragons and shadow bunnies that could have killed me. Not to mention an evil guardian who tried to steal my powers"

"Shadow bunnies?" he questioned her amusingly

"Yes shadow bunnies" she answered annoyed, not liking that her grandfather was finding this funny

"But you got through it all didn't you?" he asked

She did get through it all, no matter how much she hated it.

"I did" she smiled up at him

"Exactly" he smiled back "And all of this is far from over, trust me"

Alinor groaned and dropped her head, she did not want through all of that again. But she was very proud of herself for getting through it.

"Alianor!" she heard her name being called

She turned towards it with a smile, she knew exactly who it was.

"Father!" she said running up to him

Henry watched as she ran into her father's arms...well more like stared. He was finding himself more intrigued with Alianor as the days...well, more like hours, went by.

"I know that look" he heard his grandfather say as he walked to him

He snapped out of his daze "What look?"

Geoffrey's eyes went to Alianor and then back to his grandson, giving him a smirk.

"Oh that" Henry answered "That's nothing"

"That's what I said until I realized that it actually was and I was ruined for the rest of my life"

"It's nothing like that, I swear" Henry denied "And there's no way I'm letting a girl ruin me"

"That's what all men say until they meet the one," Geoffrey said, his mind wondering

Henry noticed his far-off look.

"Was it like that with grandmother?" he asked

"Uh...yes!" he said excitedly, trying to hide the hesitation, but his grandson noticed "Anyway..." he began wanting to get off the topic "I must say I'm very proud of you. You were a true guardian out there today"

Henry smiled confidently "Thank you grandfather"

The young man put his hand out for a handshake, something they usually did when praise was given for something he did.

"I think this one deserves a hug," Geoffrey said "A manly one that is"

Henry chuckled before he and his grandfather embraced.

"I really am proud of you"

"Thank you"

A loud roar coming from close by caused the men to pull away from each other.

"You want some recognition too, huh?" Henry asked

There next them, sat the dragon, looking on at the proceedings before him.

"Ah, Blaze," Geoffrey said up at the creature

Henry turned to his grandfather "Blaze?"

"That's his name"

"How do you know his name?"

"I gave him the name. He was my dragon after all" he answered then heard someone clear their throats behind him

He didn't have to turn around to know who it was.

"He was Ilda and I's dragon" he corrected himself

"Actually, I found him," Ilda said standing beside her former teammate "Your grandfather here helped me raise him. Then he became the guardians' pet"

"Well, you found him, I rescued him" Geoffrey corrected

"We both rescued him"

"You did not. You were afraid, that's why you asked me for help"

"I was not afraid!"

"Wait!" Philip said, stopping the argument he was sure would come "Is that why he didn't attack Henry and I when it was under Caine's spell?"

"Could be" Ilda answered "He may have seen something in you two that reminded him of us"

"Then why did it want to hurt the rest of us?" Ryia asked joining them

"He never liked me for some reason," Alistair said

"I was never particularly nice to it," Gawain said''

"Me either" Zoricus added

"We let your grandfather babysit him once Ryia" Ilda began

"And he lost him. Then he told us Blaze died" Geoffrey finished

Ryia's eyes widened as she looked at her grandfather in horror.

"He tried to light me on fire so I put him on punishment" Gawain defended himself

"On punishment?" Jacquelyn questioned

"He was a bad dragon, ok," Zoricus said

"He was not a bad dragon" Ilda defended "You guys just didn't understand him"

"How do you even lose a dragon?" Henry asked

"Well he wasn't this big back then" Gawain answered pointing to the creature "And he was a sneaky little thing"

"He was not sneaky, you were just irresponsible," Geoffrey said

"Exactly" Ilda agreed "Plus, you guys never liked him"

"He tried to light me on FIRE!" Gawain stressed

"And he almost burnt down my parents house" Zoricus added

"That wouldn't have happened if you fed him when you were supposed to!" Ilda said

"Exactly" Geoffrey agreed "Irresponsible"

Henry and Philip shared a stunned looked.

"Did you two just agree on something?"

The two young men were used to seeing their grandparents disagreeing on everything, so they were now surprised to see them actually agreeing.

"It seems we have" Geoffrey answered

"Blaze was the one thing we could agree on," Ilda said "We were so worried when we couldn't find him after Caine banished us"

"Caine had cast a shadow spell on him" Alianor answered "And he was guarding the entrance to the cave"

"That was always his job, to guard the cave" Alistair informed

"Except this time he was guarding it against the wrong people," Henry said

"At least he's back now" Ilda smiled as the dragon walked to them.

Once it got close enough, it lowered its head right in front of Ilda. She knew exactly what he wanted. She stepped forward and placed her hand on the spot over his nose and began rubbing it gently.

"And back to its spoiled self, I see" Geoffrey smiled

"Geoffrey's wrong right? You're not spoiled" she spoke to the dragon, who purred in response "That's what I thought"

The others smiled and chuckled at the interactions between the former guardians and the creature. Henry and Philip took the time to take in their grandparents actually agreeing and getting along. With Caine and his goons finally defeated, things were finally back to normal...well a new normal. A kind of normal where former enemies were getting along...for now, dragons were pets and magical powers were at their fingertips.
