The Guardians stood proudly in front of the dust pile, enjoying the cheers from their fellow Luxians.
"You did it," Alianor said to Morgaine, a large smile on her face
"No, we did it" Morgaine replied
"Yeah, we did" Jacquelyn grinned "We kicked some warrior butt!"
The guardians chuckled at their youngest, but quickly stopped and looked at her in worry as she began to cough and stick her tongue out.
"What's wrong?" Alinor asked
"I think there's shadow people dust in my mouth," she said with a disgusted look on her face
The other shook their heads at her before turning to the man they had to defeat next. With the shadow warriors and Abdul out of the way, there was only one enemy left. Caine
He stood there, dumbfounded. He honestly didn't think these new Guardians could defeat his trusted warrior. But he pulled himself out of his daze. There was no way he was going to let them win.
"You may have killed my warriors, but you won't defeat me"
"You really think you can take on six of us without your goons?" Morgaine asked with confidence, the guardians took their place behind her
"I did it with Solaria and your grandparents. Who's to say I can't do it again?"
"Oh please" Jacquelyn scoffed "You only defeated them because they gave up their powers so you won't steal it"
"And let's not forget, you had shadow warriors back then too. Plus the King's knights" Ryia added
"So you think you can defeat the great and powerful Moon Guardian on your own?" Caine asked
The Guardians nodded "We're sure of it" Morgaine said
"We'll see about that," he said before quickly waving his hands in the air
The group quickly looked around them and watched as dark grey smoke began to surround them.
"What's happening?" Jacquelyn asked
Her best friend was the first to figure it out.
"He's transporting us," he said
"To where?" Henry asked
The smoke surrounded them until it was pitch black. A second later, the wooshing sound of the smoke was gone. At first, they saw nothing. Then there was a familiar glow coming from behind them. The six quickly turned and was greeted by something they didn't expect.
"Is that..." Morgaine began, surprised by what she was seeing
"Yes" Alianor answered, looking at the object that had given them their power "It's the table"
Morgaine made her way to it, wanting to get a closer look. The guardians looked at each other in confusion.
"Why did Caine bring us here?" Philip asked
"Well if you must know..." they heard
They quickly turned to the sound of his voice. At first, they say nothing, but then a dark form emerged from the shadows at the edge of the cave. Caine walked into the light, revealing the sinister grin on his face.
"...I'm here to take your powers" he finally answered
Jacquelyn inwardly groaned. It had only been a day and someone already wanted to steal their powers.
"Do you really think we'll let you take our powers?" Henry asked amused, there was no way he would willingly give that up
"No, I don't expect you to" Caine answered "That doesn't mean I'm not going to"
With that, he raised and waved his hand in front of him. A wave of darkness came from it and towards the group of heroes. It hit them, and their bodies flew back from the force, and they hit the ground with the loud thud. They groaned in pain as they quickly sat up, looking around for the man who attacked them. But he was gone.
"Where is he?" Ryia whispered
"He's probably in the shadows" Alianor guessed
"We could really use some light, oh great Sun Queen" The youngest said
Morgaine wasn't a fan of her mocking tone the blonde used, but she was right, they needed light. She raised her hands above her head and a ball of light appeared in her palms illuminating the room. The entire cave was visible, including Caine who had his hand raised, about to attack. As soon as his hand moved, they ducked out of the way.
"Henry, light the torches" Morgaine instructed when she spotted the torches
Dodging Caine and keeping the light going was going to be a hard task and she wasn't sure she could keep it up for long.
Henry spotted the torches mounted on the walls of the cave and began to light them by throwing balls of flame at them. It didn't take long for all of them to be lit, allowing Morgaine to lower hard arms.
"What do we do now?" Ryia asked as Caine made his way to them
"We fight him," Morgaine said before the group dodge another of this waves
"But he's old" Jacquelyn pointed out "Wouldn't that be unfair to him?"
"You have a better idea?" The Sun Queen asked
"Fine" the youngest rolled her eyes before twisting her finger at the old man
The wind in the cave began to pick up speed, but before it could do anything, Caine threw what looked like a ball of blackness, right at Jacquelyn. It knocked her to the ground.
"Jacky!" Alianor screamed turning to her fallen friend
Caine used the opportunity to knock her down too. Alianor hit the ground with a grunt, feeling like the air and energy had been knocked out of her. It took her a few seconds to realize that she couldn't move.
"I can't move" she informed the others
"Me either" Jacquelyn added
"What did you do to them?" Morgaine yelled
"Just a little trick I learned years ago," Caine said "Controlling other's movements"
He saw the confused looks on their faces and proceeded to demonstrate. With no effort on their part, Alianor and Jacquelyn got up off the cave floor and walked towards the table. Their faces showed concentration, as they tried to stop themselves. But nothing worked. The other guardians and Morgaine watched on in horror as their friends stood in front of the table, standing in front of their orbs. Their hands lifted and rested on them.
"What are you doing to them?" Ryia asked
"Finally doing what I've been wanting to do all my life" he answered "Steal the powers of the guardians"
Their eyes widened as the two youngest tried to remove their hands from the table. It didn't move an inch.
Caine turned and looked at the others.
"You're next"
He quickly raised his hand and another wave was sent at the heroes. They quickly dodged and Henry was the first to attack the Moon Guardian, sending a fireball his way. Caine quickly waved his hand at the oncoming flame, creating a shield between him and it. Henry watched in anger as the flames hit the barrier and disappeared.
"You know what..." Jacquelyn said from her spot at the table "...he's really fast for an old man"
Ryia was stubbed on what to do. Could she make vines and roots come up from the mostly stony ground? She had to try.
"Cover me," she said to Philip who was close by
She quickly got down on her knees and did he thing. To her surprise, vines quickly made their ways through the ground and towards the evil guardian. But the vines didn't get to do their job as Caine sent out another wave of darkness, making the vines wither and fall.
"Our magic isn't working," Philip said as he watched Caine use the same manoeuvre to shield his frost
"What do we do?" Ryia asked
There was no time to answer. Ryia, Philip and Henry found themselves unable to move. Caine had gotten them under the spell without them realizing it.
"Time to join your friends," the moon guardian said, moving the remaining three to the table. He then turned to Morgaine "Ready to give up?"
"What makes you think I'll give up?" she asked
"Well, as you can see, your little guardians are unable to help you defeat me"
"I can defeat you on my own!"
"Really?"
"Solaria did it, so can I"
"Please" he chuckled "Solaria was powerful, I'll admit that. She's had centuries of practice. You've only been the Sun Queen for what? Six days? And you think you can defeat me?"
"Yes" she hesitated, he had a point, but she wouldn't admit that
"If you recall, I killed her"
With that he raised his hand, sending a wave of dark magic towards her. She sent out her own wave of light, stopping it in its track. He sent out one after the other, but she stopped them all.
"Ok, I'll admit it" he huffed in exhaustion "You're good"
"Thank you" she answered with a smirk
"But not good enough"
A series of waves were sent again, faster than before. She was able to stop them all...all but the last.
It was coming at her too fast, and she only had enough time to get out of the way. There was a sigh of relief when it whizzed past her but the smile on Caine's face told her that it wasn't over. She heard the sound against the cave walls and turned. The wave had bounced off the wall and was heading in her direction. It was too quick and already too close and she fell back onto the ground when it hit her.
"The great Sun Queen has fallen...again" Caine declared
"I'm not dead yet" Morgaine sneered
"For now"
Morgaine then noticed that like the others, she couldn't move. She mentally cursed, he had charmed her too.
"Time to witness my rise to the top!" he bellowed with confidence, making his way to the table.
Morgaine's body began to move without her permission. It got off the ground and made it's way to the table. The moon guardian found his orb and stood before it. He pulled out the book of Shadow Magic from his cloak, where he managed to hide it earlier. He flipped through the pages, then smiled when he found the one he was looking for.
"I'll finally get what I deserve," he said to himself before looking up at the guardians and Morgaine "Say goodbye to your powers guardians. And don't worry little Sun Queen, you're next"
He placed his right hand on his black orb. As soon as he touched it, it glowed a bright violet. Morgaine closed her eyes, seeming to not want to see it all go down. He was about to glance over to the book when something felt...off. Specifically, his hand. He stared at it, then moved it...well, tried to. His forearms moved effortlessly, but his hand stayed frozen in place.
"What's going on?" he asked himself before looking up at the group in front of him
The confused looks on the guardians' faces let him know that they too had no idea what was happening. As for Morgaine, there was a confident smile on her face.
"You're not the only one that can control someone's movements"
The guardians turned to their Sun Queen.
"What did you do?" Ryia asked
"I did nothing" she simply said
Their heads turned back to Caine. A mixture of anger and confusion was all over his face. All their eyes darted down to the orb as it got brighter. Caine's head jerked back in a scream, he looked like he was in pain. What he felt wasn't physical pain, it was the movement of magic from his body, back into the orb. He felt the energy leave him. He felt his body get weaker and weaker.
It lasted for a good twenty seconds, but for Caine, it felt like so much more. His head dropped, his body feeling like there was nothing left in it. He looked up at Morgaine and the guardians, their arms folded. They were no longer under his control. He sighed in defeat.
He was the one left without powers instead.
