Chapter 18: Guardians At Last

Alianor walked quickly through the cave, ignoring the weird sound her boots made on the damp ground as she walked. Once she turned the corner towards the blue light, it got brighter. It was then that she started running. The closer she got, the brighter the light became.

She was suddenly in a large open space, one much larger than the opening of the cave. She looked around and felt like she was under a dome. There seemed to be paintings and drawing on the wall, but she couldn't focus on that now, there was something more important in the room that needed her attention.

There, at the center of the opening was the table. Her eyes widened as she stared at it. It looked exactly like the drawing in Morgaine's book. The smoothness, the curves, the age lines. It was a beautiful sight.

Her eyes were drawn to the gems, realizing then that the light was coming from the blue one...the one she was supposed to touch.

She walked towards it, her pace slower than before, her eyes glued to the blue gem. She walked over to the left side of the table, where the gem was. It got brighter, almost obstructing her view. It was like it was calling to her. She squinted her eyes as she stepped closer. Once she was standing over it, it's brightness went away, but it still glowed.

"This is it," she said out loud to herself

It was now time for her to claim the power she was destined to have.

"Magic Table brown and bright, grant us powers from the Sun Queen's light"

"What's taking her so long?" Henry asked himself as he hid behind a boulder, he had just dodged the fire spewed from the dragon's mouth

He peeked around the rock towards the falls, there was still no sign of her.

"Don't worry about her Ok? She's doing what she has to" Jacquelyn yelled from her hiding spot close by

"She's right, we just have to do our job and buy her some time" Philip added, he was hiding with Henry

He nodded, he knew they were right.

"You guys ready?" Ryia called out from a different hiding spot

"We're ready!" they all answered

"One...two...three...GO!" Henry yelled

Jacquelyn was the first to get out from behind the small boulder, her bow and arrow set.

They had managed to keep the dragon away from the falls for a while, but it was hard containing it, and they found themselves back among the large rocks. Now all they had to do was keep it busy until Alianor returned.

Jaquelyn pointed her arrow and shot at the dragon, drawing its attention away from the falls. She shot another arrow, then ducked behind the rock to avoid the flames.

As the creature made its way towards blonde, Henry ran out from where he was hiding and yelled at the beast. It suddenly stopped it's pursuit of Jacquelyn and went after the raven-haired man instead.

That was their game, always distracting the dragon, drawing its attention before it got the chance to get at the other.

Ryia was next and lured the dragon away from Henry. She was about to dive behind another rock when she tripped on another. She fell on her stomach and let out a loud grunt.

"Ryia!" Philip yelled before making his way towards her

Once he reached her, he stood in front of her fallen form, blocking the dragon, sword held high. The dragon roared at the obstacle, it's hot breath throwing Philip back. He quickly composed himself, got on his knees, and held his sword up ready to attack. He looked into the creature's eyes, it looked back. The gaze between them was intense, but neither moved.

Henry, who was not so far away, saw what was happening and made his way to them. He stood in front of the couple with his sword held high. The dragon's eyes shifted to Henry, it was about to roar, but it stopped. It held the same intense gaze, and again, neither moved. Its eyes moved from Henry to Philip, then to Henry again. Then, in an unusual occurrence, its eyes softened, and it's head tilted to the side.

The guys looked at it confused, what was going on?

"Are you all Ok?" Jacquelyn whispered emerging from her hiding space

The dragon's head snapped towards her. The softness that was there a second ago was gone, it looked like it was ready to kill once again.

"Uh oh," Jacqulyn said as her eyes widened

The creature turned and quickly began to make its way towards her. The young blonde quickly turned and ran, but she too tripped and fell to the ground. She quickly turned on her back and was greeted with the dragon standing over her, lowering his head towards her.

She shut her eyes and covered her face with her arms, waiting for her end to come.

"Tenebris novisia!"

Jacquelyn's eyes shot open at the sound of her best friend's voice. She looked up at the dragon who seemed to be frozen above her with its mouth wide open. She smiled, Alinor had done it.

She quickly pushed herself off the ground and ran from the beast. She then looked over to the falls and saw her friend standing next to it. Her hand was surrounded by blue glowing mist. Jacquelyn looked back at the dragon, and suddenly, dark smoke began to rise around it. She was joined by the others and they all stood there as the smoke enveloped the creature.

"It's happening," Henry said "The spell is reversing"

They watched as the smoke began to whirl around it, creating a gust of wind. The smoke's dark color then began to change into a lighter one. The now white smoke then stilled and began to disappear. As it did, the looks of excitement and wonder on their faces started to change to one of dread.

"It didn't work," Jacquelyn said as they all watched the dragon emerge from the white smoke "It's still there"

Once the smoke was gone, the dragon shook itself, as if dusting itself off. It was no longer black with red eyes. Its scales were now a combination of different shades of green and its eyes were blue as the ocean. Those same eyes lowered to the group before it, and it stared.

"What do we do now?" Ryia asked

"You girls walk away, Philip and I will handle this" Henry said as they pulled their sword out

"Walk away? No, I'm fighting it too" Ryia said

"Do you have any experience fighting a dragon?" Henry asked

"Do you?" she shot back

Henry paused, she had a point.

"Well, Ryia can stay if she wants to, I'm going" Jacquelyn answered

As Jacquelyn backed away and Ryia stood her ground, Philip and Henry made their way forward. The dragon's eyes focused on the two young men, and like before, its eyes softened and it's head tilted.

"It's not attacking us" Philip pointed out

"Why?" Henry asked, noticing the same

The creature lowered it's head, hovering it right before the two. It looked at them with what looked like excitement, waiting for them to do something.

"I think it wants us to touch it," Philip said

"Touch it? Are you mad?" Henry hissed

Maybe he was, but he couldn't deny the feeling he got from it. He moved his sword from his right hand to his left. He lifted his now empty hand as he walked closer to the dragon's head.

"Philip!" his teammate hissed

"Philip, what are you doing?" Ryia called out

He ignored them and continued to move closer.

"What is he doing?" Alianor asked she had finally made her way to her best friend

"I think he's trying to pet it" she answered

Philip made his way closer, and the dragon stayed still, waiting. Soon enough, his fingers touched the soft scales above its nose. A purr came from its throat as if it were happy.

"Hey buddy," Philip said and another purr came from it, saying hello back "You're not a bad dragon are you?" the creature subtlely shook it's head "Caine turned you into an evil dragon didn't he?" It answered with the same sound

"This can't be happening," Henry said as he watched the scene before him

The dragon looked to Henry and purred at him. Philip smiled

"I think he wants you to pet him," he said

"What? How do you know that?"

"I just know"

"And who says it's a boy dragon anyway?"

"That's not the point Henry, just come pet it"

"I don't know..." Henry said hesitantly

"Well I'll pet it," Jacquelyn said

The girls had made their way closer.

"Me too," Ryia said

"Me three" Alinor added

The three ran past Henry and made their way to the dragon, petting it as it purred.

"You're such a cute dragon, yes you are" Jacquelyn cooed at it

The creature was enjoying all the attention it was getting.

"Uh...fellow guardians, we have powers to claim and a kingdom to save," Henry said, pulling their attention

Jacquelyn frowned in disappointment. For a second, they had completely forgotten why they were there in the first place. They said their goodbyes to the dragon, promising to be back after a while. They then allowed Alianor to lead the way.

They followed her up the makeshift stairs and across the ledge. Once at the mouth of the cave, they took in the appearance. There was nothing magical about puddles of water and growing moss. They wondered if the table was even there.

Then, before them, lights began to glow, like when Alianor entered the first time. But this time it wasn't blue, it seemed to be a mixture of colours. Alianor smiled, the table could tell they were close.

She led them to the lights, and as before, it got brighter the closer they got. Soon enough, they were standing in front of the table, the others looking in awe as the gems glowed.

"Now, just place your hands on the gem and repeat what Morgaine told us," alianor told them

As her fellow guardians took their places, Alianor took the time to take a closer look at the cave walls, scanning the drawings and writings on it. She smiled to herself. They were done by their grandparents, probably as an effort to spice the place up. Apparently, a magical table wasn't enough. She stood in one spot and looked around, seeing a lot more than she had noticed before. Their grandparents must have spent a lot of time there.

She placed her attention back on the others, who were all in place.

"Ready?" Henry asked, the others standing at the table with him nodded

"Magic table brown and bright, grant us powers of the Sun Queen's light"

The gems again began to glow, a bit different than it did before. The light seemed to escape from the gems, covering their hands. Then, they felt a sudden rush of energy from their hands, to their arms, shoulders, then all over their body.

It continued for a while, but they stood there and took it all in.

Soon, the light disappeared and the glowing dulled. They all looked up at each other and smiled.

"We did it! We're actually guardians!" Philip said as the others grinned with excitement

He was right, they were finally, officially, the Guardians of Luxia.
