Chapter 14: The Climb
Abdul stepped into the room, wondering where he should start tearing it apart. He had one goal, and that was the find the book of Dark Magic. He surveyed the room, it looked like it belonged to someone young, a young woman to be exact. But then it hit him, there was no young woman living in this house. Could it have been Alistair's daughter's old room?
He continued to look around, there was a table at the far end of the room, right next to a window. On it, was a book. He quickly walked over and picked it up. The small light brown leather covered book had the name "Alianor" at the front. He opened it to read. It looked like poems, and at the top, it was dated. The last few entries had recent dates. Why would Alistair's daughter come to this room to write? Was her name even Alianor? Then another thought came to him. Were there more descendants than they knew of? He searched the closet and checked the dresses, they all looked modern and too small to fit his daughter. It was then he knew he had to speak to his master.
When Alistair was questioned, the look on his face gave away that there was something he didn't want them to know. He kept his mouth shut, not wanting to say anything. Soon after a warrior that was sent to Zoricus' house showed up with the same predicament. A room was found, looked like it belonged to a young woman too, maybe around the same age as the one supposedly in Alistair's house. The warrior thought he should report it immediately, remembering Zoricus saying he lived alone.
There was again intense gazes between the three, Caine afraid to ask the question he desperately needed an answer for. For just a while, the book was not important.
"There are others," he said, rather than asked, but there was no response. "Who else lives with you two?!" he asked this time, louder
They contemplated answering. Should they admit to the existence of their granddaughters? If they didn't or lied, he was sure to go to Alistair's family, who may not be able to handle Caine and admit it. But Caine knew the answer to his own question, he just wanted confirmation.
"Alianor is my granddaughter"
"The room you found belongs to my granddaughter, Jacquelyn"
Caine grew furious.
"Where are they?!"
"We don't know" Alistair calmly answered
"Where are they?!" Caine asked again not believing him
"We don't know!" Zoricus repeated "We got separated when you sent your goons after us at the festival. We haven't seen them since"
There was no way to mask the worry in his voice. Their granddaughters were out somewhere and they had no idea what they could be going through.
Caine saw how genuine he was and believed him, but that didn't get rid of the anger. He had thought that he only had three families to deal with, and had everyone in Alistair's and Zoricus' family accounted for. Now, the chances of new guardians rising were higher than ever.
But then he thought, there was no way they could find the table if they were in the south. If he couldn't get past the barrier, neither could two magic-less young women. He turned to Abdul.
"Get the warriors to search the city for them"
"But Master, they don't know what they look like"
Abdul had a point. Not even he was sure what they looked like, he hadn't paid much attention to who was standing around the former guardians. A search wouldn't work, they needed another way to find them. Alianor's book caught Caine's attention and a smile appeared on his face. He knew just what to use to find them.
A tracking spell.

"This better work" Jacquelyn yelled up at Philip who was halfway up the cliff
"It will!" he yelled back down at her
They had spent the last couple of minutes discussing how to get up the cliff. Jacquelyn, wanting a chance to use her arrow suggested tying the end of the rope to an arrow and shooting it up the cliff to hit a tree. Once it was secure on the tree, they would climb up the rope. But Philip shot down that idea, saying there was no guarantee that the arrow would hit a tree. And even if they did, it may not withhold their weight. He had a better idea, one that included his climbing skills, a skill Henry wasn't the best at.
He would climb the cliff, using two daggers to stab into the hard dirt and pull himself up. The rope was supposed to be attached to him, but arguing that it would weigh him down Jacquelyn insisted that she still get to shot it up with her arrow.
"How long do I have to stand here?" Henry asked annoyed, he was standing at the base of the cliff, under Philips ascending body
"Until he's safely at the top" Jacquelyn answered
She had told him to stand under Philip to catch him if he ever fell.
"I'm not going to fall," Philip said from high up
"We don't know that for sure" she yelled back at him
Philip rolled his eyes at her comment and continued climbing. Soon enough, he made it to the top. He looked over the edge, down at his fellow guardians.
"Ok Jacquelyn, it's your turn to shine," he said
The blonde grinned in excitement as she set up her bow and arrow, the end of the rope already attached. She took her stance and steadied her arms, remembering everything she was taught. She aimed high and pulled back. After a few seconds, she let go of the arrow, and it went flying. It went higher and higher, past the edge of the cliff. Soon it took a dive and landed in the dirt next to Philip's feet after he quickly moved away.
Philip looked over the edge again.
"You almost hit me!" he said
"My bad," she said with a smirk
Refraining from rolling his eyes at her again. Philip pulled the arrow out of the ground and untied the rope from it. He found a tree close by and tied the rope to it as tightly as he could.
"It's ready!" he called out after testing the rope out
"Ok" Jacquelyn answered
She rubbed her hands together, ready to grab on. But before she could take a hold of the rope, Ryia was in front of her, already pulling herself up.
"Hey!" Jacquelyn said annoyed
"You were moving too slow" Ryia answered without stopping
With her feet walking up the side and her hands pulling herself up, Ryia easily made her way to the top.
"My turn!" Jacquelyn announced, stopping Henry from taking the rope
She grabbed on and began to make her way up...slowly. She struggled a bit to pull her body up
"This is harder than I thought," she said out loud
They shook their heads, all this talk and she was taking forever to get to the top. After a while, and a string of explicit language, Jacquelyn finally made it. Once there, she collapsed on the ground.
Henry was ready to take the rope next but remembered the words of his grandfather. He had to be a leader, and a leader didn't leave one of his people behind, especially a woman.
"You should go next," he said turning to Alianor
She was standing in silence, staring up at the top of the cliff. She had been like that since Philip began climbing.
"Alianor!" Henry said her name louder, breaking her out of her trance
"Huh?" she answered, her eyes finally off the cliff and on him
"It's your turn"
"Oh"
Alianor swallowed the lump in her throat and made her way over to the rope. She grabbed unto it and noticed that it didn't feel as old and dry as the one the bridge was made of. She looked up the side of the cliff, it looked a lot higher from her new angle. She swallowed again, and took a deep breath. Her hands went higher on the rope and she gripped on tightly. All she had to do now was lift her feet, but she was having trouble doing that. She tried, but it was as if her legs wouldn't listen.
"Please don't tell me you're scared of doing this too?" Henry asked
She didn't have to say anything for him to know the answer.
"Ugh" he groaned, knowing this might take a while
A few minutes had passed and Alianor's feet still hadn't left the ground.
"Oh come on" Henry flung his hands in annoyance "Just put one foot on the cliff and then the other"
"I can't"
"Why not?!"
"Cause I can't!"
"You're such a coward"
"I am not!"
"Hey!" Jacquelyn's voice rang out from above them. They both looked up "Call my best friend a coward again and I'll drop a rock on your head!"
Henry looked away annoyed while Alianor sent her friend a small grateful smile. He tried to calm himself, trying to think of a way to help. He couldn't just leave her there and climb up. Alianor was also trying to calm herself. She wasn't a coward, and she had to prove it. She couldn't stand there and let them go off and save the kingdom without her.
With an idea in mind, Henry grabbed the rope from her hands.
"Hey" Alianor protested "I can do this Ok, just let me try"
"No" he answered trying the rope around his waist
After making sure it was secure, he took the end and began to tie it around Alianor's waist.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm tying the rope are around you"
"Why?"
"So I can lift you up while I climb"
Alianor's brows furrowed at him, was he serious?
"You can't do that!" she said
"Why not?"
"Aren't you scared I'll weigh you down and we fall?"
He secured the rope around her.
"No, I'm not. Because one, you're a twig, and two, I'm not a coward"
At that, a loud thud onto next to them. They both jumped back. There, on the ground next to them, was a large stone. Henry quickly looked up above them.
"I didn't call her a coward," he said
"You were close enough," Jacquelyn said, her head seen peeking over the cliff
Henry shook his head at her before looking back at Alianor.
"Just hold on to the rope OK"
"OK" she nodded a bit unsure
He wanted her to be sure, but that was probably the surest she would be. He held on to the rope and placed one foot at a time on the cliff. Soon enough, he was climbing. When he was a few feet above, he looked down at her.
"Stand right under me, and hold on tight"
She nodded, did what he said and watched as he continued to climb. Eventually, the rope between them was no longer on the ground and she was being lifted up. It took longer than she wanted, but eventually, Henry made it to the top, and the others helped pull her the rest of the way up. Once at the top, she hurried to untie herself, but the knot was too tight.
"Let me," Henry said stopping her
She dropped her hands and allowed him to get on his knees and help her
"It wasn't so bad was it?" he asked
"No" she admitted before looking down at him "Thank you"
"No problem," he said flashing a charming smile up at her

Rage, disappointment, and fear could all be seen in Caine's eyes as he stared at the enchanted objects floating in front of him. It was a book and a black boot.
His tracking spell involved enchanting an object of the person you wanted to find, in this case, Alianor's book and Jacquelyn's boot, and let the objects find their way back to the owner.
His spell had worked, and he and his warriors were following the floating objects around the city. He was excited, ready to capture the descendants and lock them away with their families.
But the anger instantly appeared when the objects came to a stop in front of the thing he wasn't expecting.
The wall.
