Chapter 1: Happy Birthday Sun Queen

"Its words will be revealed to the destined"

Morgaine read the words on the first page for what could have been the millionth time in her lifetime. She had stolen the thread bound, brown leather covered book many times, and panned through its pages. She couldn't understand why it was so important to her family. There was nothing in it except for the words on that first page.

Once she turned 18 though, its importance was finally revealed to her. She knew of the Sun Queen, The Guardians, and the part her great great grandfather, Merek, played in their lives. Before she died, the Sun Queen told him that the new Sun Queen would come from his descendants. As the years passed, her great-great grandfather had dreams and visions about the new Queen and the next generation of Guardians. All he saw was written in this book, and before he died, he used the pendant to hide the contents of its pages. Only when the right descendant, at the age of 21, was given the book and pendant would the contents of it be revealed.

Morgaine spent the last three years learning all she could about the Guardians, the Sun Queen, and the Table. She was subjected to etiquette classes, taught to behave as a queen should.

Now, clad in what she thought was the tightest gown ever made, she sat in her room, on her bed, looking down at the first page. The festivities of her 21st birthday party could be heard outside the door, but she had no time for that, all she wanted to know was if she was the chosen one or not.

But who was she kidding, there was no way she could be the Sun Queen. There was nothing sunny or queen-ish about her. Her skin looked tanned, her hair dark brown and straight as a pin, nothing like the Sun Queen's radiant skin and wavy glowing blonde hair. She never considered herself ladylike...actually, no one did. It was the reason the etiquette classes were given, to begin with. She wasn't the pretty dress and fancy shoe kind of girl. She was more into tight trousers and leather boots. Was her great great grandfather sure it was the first daughter of the generation and not the second or third? Her younger cousins looked more like Sun Queen material than she did. Most of her family didn't believe that she was. They had already made up their mind that it wasn't going to be her, but her cousin's daughter. Her mother thought otherwise and did all she could to make her daughter queen like.

Even though she didn't feel like Sun Queen material, she wanted to be the chosen one. Like her mother, she wanted to prove to everyone in her family who ever doubted she could, that she can actually be the Sun Queen, and do it well.

She blocked out the party and took as deep of a breath that her tight corset would allow her. If she turned the page and words and pictures appeared, she would be the next Sun Queen.

She took the edge of the page between her fingers, and slowly turned the page over. She released the page and stared at the blankness. One second passed...nothing. Two seconds, nothing. Ten seconds passed and still, nothing happened.

A sinking feeling started in her stomach. Maybe everyone was right, maybe she couldn't be the Sun Queen.

She let out a sigh of disappointment and was about to close the book when the floor of her bedroom began to shake under her feet. Confusion and shock were etched on her face as the vibrations moved up her body. The termers felt small at first, but, they grew stronger. One hand held the book firmly to her chest, while the other held on to the sheets on her bed. She looked around her room, the items hanging on the wall, and sitting on shelves were shaking vigorously. She listened for noise outside the door, all she could hear were the screams from her relatives.

The earthquake lasted for a while, and then it died down. Morgaine opened her eyes that had shut during the termers and took a look around her room. The paintings on her wall were either slanting or on the floor. The shelves were also slanted, and the books that were on them were now on the floor as well. She had experienced earthquakes before, but none like this.

She remembered the book, and slowed unclenched it from her chest and looked down.

To her surprise, the blank pages were now filled with words.

At the top of the page, it read

"Congratulations my child. You are the chosen one"

She skimmed her fingers over the words. Could this really be happening? Was she really the chosen one?

She then noticed the pendant hanging around her neck. It was glowing. She hadn't heard of it doing that before. Ok, so, maybe she really was.

She then continued to read.

"You are now the Sun Queen, protector of Luxia.

The pendant has entrusted you with the powers of the sun. Use it well."

Well, that confirmed it.

"If I am not mistaken, an earthquake has just occurred"

Morgaine froze. How did he know that?

"But this is no ordinary quake. The Moon Guardian Caine has finally escaped from his underground prison, ready to finish what he started years ago"

There was a sinking feeling in her stomach for the second time that day. The evil guardian was back.

"It is now up to you to find the new guardians and aid them in defeating Caine once and for all"

Her shoulders dropped as the reality of what was happening sunk in. She had thought being the Sun Queen would be more fun. Being able to do what you want because you had the power to, nothing could beat that. She thought the whole protecting Luxia thing would come some years later. But the seriousness of it all was revealing itself, and the importance of saving her kingdom was getting to her.

"Doing this would be difficult. It would require strength, wisdom and intelligence, all things you already possess. You wouldn't be chosen if you didn't"

Did her great great grandfather really believe she had those things?

"But you won't be going in blind. This book was created to help you. Everything you need to know will be in here, but it won't be here all at once. When the time is right, it will be revealed to you.

Now go on, and fulfill your destiny"

Eager for more, Morgaine quickly turned the page. It was blank at first, but soon, words and drawings were starting to appear.

Before she could begin to read, she heard knocking on her door.

"Morgaine?!"

It was her mother, she sounded worried.

"Yes mother?" she answered, looking up at the door for the first time since the earthquake.

Her door was blocked by the fallen tall bookcase that was next to her door.

"Are you ok?"

"Yes"

She saw the door shake, her mother was trying to open it.

"Why isn't the door opening?"

"The bookcase fell in front of it"

"Can you move it?"

"I'll try"

But before she got up, her eyes fell back to the pages of the book.

"First you need to find the new guardians, the descendants of the old. The pendant will show you where to find them. The drawings in here will show you who they are."

As soon as she finished reading, the glowing pendant lifted from her chest, and gently tugged in the direction of her window. It was showing her the way to the new guardians like the book said.

She jumped off her bed, stepping over the fallen items, forgetting her mother at the door, and made her way over to the window to look out. All she saw was in the gloomy looking environment was the trees of the forest. She wondered when it got so gloomy. Far beyond, she saw the almost invisible lavender waves of the magical barrier. Was the pendant pointing to the forest? To the shield? Or was it something behind the shield? Guess it was time to find out.

"Morgaine?"

She didn't answer. There was no time to explain things to her mother. She held on tightly to the book in one hand and used the other to hold the window sill. She began to lift her legs over, through the window, but then stopped.

"Ugh" she groaned in frustration, her gown wasn't allowing her leg to go any higher

"Morgaine!" her mother called again, louder this time

Now, what was she supposed to do? She could pass out the front door, but she would have to explain everything to her family. She wasn't ready to rub it in their faces that she was now the Sun Queen. There was another option, she had to change her gown...if she knew how to get out of it.

Then it hit her. She was the Sun Queen, she had magic.

"Ok, how do I do this?" she said, looking down at herself

She thought that maybe there was a spell or something that helped to change your clothes. She opened the book, hoping to find some spell, and behold, more words had appeared at the bottom of the previous words she was reading.

"To use your magic, there is no spell. All you need to do is think it, feel it, and believe it. And whatever you want, will happen"

"Think it, feel it, believe it" she repeated to herself "Ok, here we go"

She closed her eyes and focused. She wanted out of this gown, and into some tight trousers. She stood there for a while, thinking, feeling and believing, but all she felt was a tingling feeling all over her body.

She slowly opened her eyes, she didn't feel any different...but her gown certainly was. It somehow turned into a long brown coat, and the tights could be seen under it. Knee-high brown boots were on her feet.

"Yes!" Morgaine cheered

She had used magic for the first time!

"Hurry! She isn't answering!" she heard her mother from behind the door

Soon, hard pounds could be heard, they were trying to knock it down.

She tightly held on to the book again and easily made her way through the window and to the ground outside, that was just a few feet below. She quickly made her way from her house, using the glowing sun at the end of her pendant to guide her. She was a few yards away when she heard her bedroom door fall to the floor.

"Morgaine!" she heard her mother, but she didn't answer and kept running forward

When she was a good way from her house, she stopped and opened the book once again. She tried to slow her breathing as she looked at the drawing on the page. The first was a girl with short blond hair. She looked like any typical short-haired girl. The only difference was the large magenta hooded cloak hanging from her shoulders.
