No More Secrets
Aragorn woke to a searing pain in his shoulder. He could barely remember what happened.
Then it hit him. He'd gone outside, seen Legolas attacking Boromir, he'd tried to stop him, and then he stabbed him.
Aragorn shot up. He gasped as he put weight on his shoulder. He fell back onto the pillow he'd been laying on.
He looked around the room he was in. It had the bed he was in as well as a singal window.
It was morning and sunlight was pouring in. His shoulder had been bandaged and was no longer bleeding. Even though it still hurt.
Aragorn thought back to the day before. After they'd finished talking with Boromir they'd been taken to seperate rooms.
He'd fallen asleep and then awoke suddenly. He had felt like someone was calling him. He'd gone outside to see Legolas attacking Boromir.
He'd tried to pull him off, then Legolas had stabbed him.
The last thing he remembered was seeing Legolas drop his knife. He didn't remember what happened next.
The door to his room opened. He turned and saw Pippin stick his head in. "He's awake!" he called behind his shoulder.
He walked in and was followed by the rest of the hobbits. Then came Gimli and finally Gandalf.
Where was Legolas?
"How are you feeling?" Pippin asked. He stood next to the others whose faces were filled with concern.
"Fine. My shoulder just hurts a little." Once he'd reassured them he turned to Gandalf.
"Where's Legolas?" Gandalf sighed. Sam shuffled his feet while Merry and Frodo exchanged a look.
"Boromir had him locked in a cell. I don't know what he plans to do with him." Gimli told him somberly.
Aragorn looked back to Gandalf. "Do you know?" the wizard shook his head.
"I believe he plans to keep him here until after his assault on Mordor. Afterwards, he will send him back to Mirkwood. He will not be welcome in Gondor."
Aragorn suddenly remembered that Boromir planned to attack Mordor today. He was about to ask Gandalf about it but the wizard had already guessed what he was thinking.
"Boromir is holding off the attack until tomorrow. He plans to convince Theodred and Eomer to accompany him but I doubt that they will."
Aragorn closed his eyes for a moment. Everything his friends had told him filled him with dread.
"What happened last night? With Legolas?" Pippin asked. "You never told us what happened Gandalf."
Aragorn opened his eyes and looked at the hobbit. He didn't want to think about last night.
"You will all have to forgive me. I was blind to what Boromir was doing to us when we met yesterday."
They looked at Gandalf who breathed deeply before continuing.
"Boromir was clouding our minds, controlling us, he wanted to make sure we didn't try to oppose him."
"What about Legolas? Wasn't his mind clouded like ours?" Pippin asked.
Gandalf shook his head. "Legolas was never under Boromir's control."
"How?" Frodo asked. "He was led away like the rest of us."
"He only made it seem like he was. He was able to make Boromir think that his power was working on him."
"How could he have done that?" Merry asked.
"Because he's been controlled like that before."
Aragorn knew immediately what Gandalf was talking about.
"Sauron."
Gandalf looked at him in surprise.
"What are you talking about?" Gimli asked.
Aragorn told them what Legolas had told him. He figured it would be fine to tell them, Gandalf had been about to.
The others listened in shock at what Aragorn told them. How Sauron had made Legolas kill innocent people and how Gandalf saved him.
When Aragorn finished Gandalf asked, "Is that all he told you?" Aragorn looked at him, confused."Yes. He told me everything."
"Did he tell you that was everything?"
Aragorn felt uneasy. There was more? "He didn't say anything else after that."
Gandalf sighed. He closed his eyes. "What else is there?" Pippin asked.
Gandalf opened his eyes and looked at them sadly. "I'm afraid there is much more to this story. And none of it is good."
Aragorn sat up. "Tell us." he wanted to know what Legolas hadn't told him.
Gandalf took a deep breath and continued, "I didn't find Legolas alone. I was helped by a friend of his. After we found him we brought him to Lothlorien. There, Galadriel and Celeborn helped remove Sauron's control over him."
"We brought him back to Mirkwood and for a while he seemed normal. But then he became restless. He started to distance himself from his people. As well as his father and his friend."
"He would go off on his own and not return for many hours. He never told anyone where he went or why. One day, his friend decided to follow him and see where he went."
"He followed him to the edge of Mirkwood's borders, near the place where people traveled to Dale. While he was searching for Legolas a group of men were leaving Dale. When suddenly one of them was shot."
"He was about to go help them when he saw who was attacking them."
The hobbits eyes widened in shock. "You don't mean..." Frodo started but stopped.
"Yes. It was Legolas."
There were small gasps of shock from the hobbits. Gimli's mouth dropped opened and Aragorn remained silent.
"He killed all of them. Without mercy. He left no evidence of his being there. His friend returned to King Thranduil's halls and reported what he had seen."
"When Thranduil learned what his son had been doing, he ordered that Legolas was not to leave the palace. For a while they were able to keep him there but eventually he was able to get
out."
"Thranduil sent guards after him and they were able to stop him from leaving. They brought him back but the elves grew suspicious. Thranduil never told anyone what Legolas had been doing. Only Legolas's friend and a trusted companion of Thranduil's."
"Legolas became restless. He continued to try and escape from the palace. But some of the elves confronted Legolas to figure out what was going on. They cornered him and tried to get answers from him, but Legolas had gone mad."
Gandalf paused. It pained him to speak of this next part.
"He killed them. All of them."
"His friend tried to stop him, but Legolas was blinded by his rage. He killed him too. He almost killed his father but he was subdued by guards. Thranduil was forced to take extreme measures against his son's actions."
"He chained him and locked him away deep inside his halls. He sent for Galadriel, as well as Elrond and myself. We found no traces of Sauron in his mind. He was acting on his own."
"There was nothing we could do for him. In the end, we decided to send him to Rivendell. In hope that he could somehow be healed. He stayed there for almost 100 years. While he was there he became friends with Elrond's sons, and Arwen."
"When he returned home he promised to never use his weapons against anyone, except those that served Sauron. He worked hard to remove all memories of his captivity in Mordor from his mind."
"Includimg the way he was trained to fight. He never went back to his old ways. He turned away from being the killer he was."
"When Saruman returned those memories to him, he began to fear that he would become the monster he once was. He tried so hard to fight it."
Gandalf looked sadly at Aragorn.
"Unfortunately, he lost."
They remained silent. No one spoke. Aragorn finally spoke.
"Where is he?"
"Aragorn-" Gandalf started.
"I want to see him."
Gandalf sighed.
"Very well..."
