BEFORE
A lone man stands on top of a building looking over the white sanded beaches and tourist filled resorts of Ocean City. Onlookers watch in fear from down below, as the man takes another step closer to the edge, teasing the crowd.
Gossip spreads and people swarm to the beach to observe the crazed man who threatens the crowd with a single jump. He steps closer and smirks at the sound of gasps and screams of genuine fear. This is what he wanted.
He glances over at the pier for the last time and smiles as memories of his childhood flood his mind. He remembers his first date where he kissed Betty Sanders on the Ferris Wheel at the pier and chuckles as he recalls her blushed cheeks and genuine smile. He remembers spending days on end at the beach during summer as his mother waited tables at the hotel across the road. He remembers the first time he saw her, with bronze, freckled skin and sun-bleached hair, she was hard to miss, but most importantly he remembers the first time he took The Enhancement.
How could he have known it would end with this. It wasn't like he did anything wrong. The government distributed and encouraged taking it with every meal. His mother gave it to him at breakfast, every kid at school took it at lunch, even the hotel guests would take it with their buffet. It was a supplement. Simple as that. A daily serve of essential nutrients that the body needed to function. They couldn't have known it would cause such a horrific side effect to such a small percentage of children. The special ones.
If they had maybe he wouldn't be here, standing on top of a building ready to unleash his developing powers on the innocents below.
He was one of the first to be a part of The Examination months earlier. At the time he hadn't known it was introduced to single out the affected public and figure out what ability their mutation caused to understand what burden they may be on society.
He heard they ranked them from one to ten. If you were a one, your mutation wasn't considered particularly dangerous but tens were a different story. They were so powerful the government simply made them disappear but they couldn't make him disappear.
They said they hadn't seen anyone as strong as him. That's why he had to leave, why he's on the run but not anymore. It's time to show the world what he can do...
Without hesitation, he throws his arms above his head and closes his eyes in complete focus. The crowd gasps, covering their children's eyes and reaching for their loved ones assuming the man was attempting to take his life. No one should have to witness a death like this. Little do they know they were about to witness more than just one.
Suddenly the ground begins to shake and a rumble fills the silence. The man begins to summon his true powers from deep within, a feeling he had not experienced in months since hiding. On cue, the surf begins to pull back leaving shiny, damp sand behind and a siren sounds in the distance sending the beach into a frenzy. Now they know what's coming and who this man truely is.
The man can help but smile as he feels his abilities grow and a familiar tingle sounds within his outstretched arms. His whole body shakes as the sheer power of his abilities overcomes him and he raises his weakening arms higher, pulling the tide with him.
Ocean City is about to live up to its name.
Slowly but steadily, a tsunami forms on the horizon, blocking the setting sun and casting a inky glow over the city. The sky fills with dark clouds and palm tree sway with powerful gusts of wind as the screams of innocents fill the air. People attempt to run from the beach but there is little they can do to stop the wave as it makes its way toward the coastal city.
There is no escape.
This is no natural event.
This is what The Eccentric can do.
