I stop dead in my tracks the moment I realise who the soldiers really are. But it's not until the guard closest to the fence disappears into thin air then appears right in front of me that I know that my suspicions are correct.
"They are Eccentric!" I hear one of our own scream in the background but I don't listen to what comes next. Instead, I begin to back away from the traitor just meters in front of me in alarm.
The woman sighs and looks down at me in pity then disappears again. I raise my eyebrows in confusion and take a step toward the now unprotected section on the fence when suddenly she appears behind me and I feel a blow in my lower back. I cry out in pain and fall forwards, gasping for air. She then kicks me in my side sending me sprawling sideways into the dirt while grasping my abdomen in agony.
"Stop," I say while covering my face with my arms as she kicks me in the knee, sending bolts of pain up my leg.
"Stop it!" I say, more loudly but she doesn't stop. She continues to kick and punch me as I roll up into a ball in an effort to stop the beating. Every time I lash out at her she disappears and reappears right behind me where I can no longer see or reach her. She laughs at my effects and continues to kick me as the other eccentric start to battle it out around me. I begin to shake in anger as she chuckles down at me then vanishes again. I don't have to take this. I have these powers for a reason. Might as well use them. She gets one last kick in before I react.
"Stop!" I scream and heave my arms and legs out from underneath me. I watch in astonishment as hundreds of tiny ice barbs shoot out from me, hitting anyone that was unfortunate enough to be standing nearby. The woman screams in agony as the barbs fly through the air and hit every inch of her body. Her eyes widen in horror as she grabs at the spikes trying to pull them out but ends up breaking off the tips leaving the ice wedged in her body. This only makes her panic more as blood begins to radiate out of the wounds, staining her uniform and tickling down her limbs to the ground.
"No, no, no," she hisses and wraps her bloody hand around the worst of the wounds in her stomach. I watch from the ground as the blood rushes from her face and she begins to wheeze at the pain while backing away from me and mumbling nonsense. I stand up from the ground and take a step toward her.
"Wait, let me help," I say and reach for her, suddenly feeling guilty.
"Get away from me you bitch," she growls then attempts to disappear. She vanishes in and out of my sight as she struggles to use her powers while she is so weak. She begins to hobble over to the fence but eventually gets a handle on her powers and vanishes for good. I doubt she'll be coming back anytime soon. I scoff and turn around in search of Tate and the others but am taken back by the scene in front of me.
I watch as more Eccentric soldiers reveal their powers and I jump back away from the flames, sparks and water that fly out from both soldiers and prisoners.
"Layla," shouts a voice from behind me and I turn around to see my aunt standing away from the battle with the two kids trailing behind her. I smile when I notice Emmie grab Trish's trembling hand and make my way toward them but it isn't until I get close that I realise who is missing.
"Where's Tate?" I shout as I run toward the group dodging twisted pieces of metal and balls of flames. I'm only a few meters away from them when I notice Eddie's small force field that surrounds the group. By notice I mean run straight into it.
"What the hell Eddie!" I shout and clutch my now bleeding nose that still hadn't healed from the days earlier.
"I'm so sorry!" he says and runs toward me. "I forgot to take it down."
I push him away and throw my head back to stop the bleeding and feel for tenderness. At least he was keeping the girls safe.
"I'm fine," I wheeze and close my eyes in frustration, "Where is Tate?"
I swear this whole escape is just me getting beaten up then losing sight of the others.
"He's-" Eddie starts but is interrupted by a scream. I whip around and watch as Sydney runs toward two men who are in the middle of brawl. Then I realise who is part of the fight.
Tate doges a punch from a huge man in a tight military uniform and makes a beeline for the fence but is yanked back and thrown onto the ground as if he weighed nothing. Tate stands back up and spits blood onto the ground while chuckling and mumbles something at the man that only angers him more. Sydney finally reaches the group blows a huge gust of air at the man but he throws his hands out in front of him and shoots a blast of water back toward her. He's a Soak. Controller of water. Tate has no chance. The man is considerably stronger than Sydney as he sends her back a few hundred yards' and she falls face first into the grass. I wince knowing first-hand how much it hurts. She spits out a mouth full of dirt and stands up now drenched in water and covered mud.
The man turns his attention back to Tate who now has two fistfuls of flames and a furious expression.
"Oh no," I gasp and take a step toward the brawl but a hand on my shoulder pulls me back.
"He's got this," Eddie says proudly. Idiot.
"No you don't understand," I start, "That man, he's a Soak." Eddie quickly sucks in a breath and curses under his breath when he realises the problem. I look over Eddies shoulder and watch in shock as Tate throws a ball of fire at the man who puts up a simple shield of water. The ball hits the water with a sizzle and burns out into nothingness. The man smirks at Tate who stands, eyes wide in shock. Fire has nothing against water.
I have to do something.
