Chapter 25: Raven Down! Kazuya's Questions
Raven POV
I didn't really know what to think about this. I still held the Zaibatsu's letter in my hand. The one that revealed my next opponent. The name at the bottom, almost like that of a ghost.
'Kazuya Mishima'
I was still trying to wrap my head around how he'd seemingly come back from the dead. Kazuya died during the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2 decades ago. And yet, Eagle had reported his presence at the fourth tournament, and here he was at this one as well. His name written here was proof enough.
Could I win? I don't know. But I would try, I'd be damned if both me and Eagle lost this tournament before we got the name of its sponsor. If I lost, it would be down to him entirely. And I was unsure if he'd be able to handle it.
Either way, I had a window now. One where I could collect more information. Kazuya could very well have the information I sought. And with the name was the contact information, I wouldn't be surprised if Kazuya just had a burner phone for the tournament as well. Can't imagine him being one to have regular phone calls and contacts.
It was me who initiated the conversation. He was very blunt, giving a 'What?' when I rang and a 'Fine.' when I ordered him to meet me on top of one of the skyscrapers in the city, not one being used for the tournament, I wanted this fight kept off the Zaibatsu records.
As soon as the call was over, I made my way to the rooftop in question and waited. A single bead of sweat trickled down the side of my face as I maintained my calm persona, keeping my nerves in check. I couldn't let any anxiety get in the way. No matter how dangerous I'd heard the Mishimas were...
Timeskip...
I don't know how long I waited, it felt like it could have been minutes, or hours. The sound of footsteps snapped me out of the state and I turned to see my opponent in the flesh. He held a glare fixed on me as he approached.
I slowly turned, giving him a sideways glance as I stated "You're the coward that ran away from danger." I was referring to the incident at the end of the last tournament, Kazuya left Heihachi to die in the explosion while he fled.
My accusation actually seemed to catch Kazuya off guard. His eyes widened as he asked "How do you know about that?! Who are you?" My eyes narrowed under my sunglasses as I sternly told him. "I have no need to explain anything to you."
Kazuya folded his arms, mirroring my posture. A smirk spread across his face as he commented "You'll be talking soon enough." He lowered his arms and entered the stance of Mishima style karate.
The time for talking was over it seems, I entered my own stance and waited. My nervousness may have dissipated. But I knew not to get cocky. That was the worst mistake I could make. I had to keep my wits about me.
In an instant, I stepped forward and thrust my arms in a motion to chop both sides of his neck. That's when I was met with a fist thrusting right into my stomach! I paused for a moment, gasping at the force of the blow.
Kazuya quickly followed up with a kick, striking me in the shoulder and knocking me to the ground. He spoke coldly. "You'd be wise to tell me what I want to know." For a moment, he dropped his guard and I used that moment to strike!
Instead of slowly getting to my feet, I spun around striking his legs with a low sweeping attack. This made him stagger and granted me the chance to follow up. Now on my feet, I went in for a palm thrust that struck him right in the chest.
I shifted behind him rapidly and went in for two punches one after the other, followed by a kick to his back that crashed him face-first into the ground. I didn't think for a minute that this would be enough to take him out. And sure enough, he was soon back on his feet giving me an even more angered glare than before.
He stepped forward and thrust his fist forward. I managed to block it however the sheer force of the strike was enough that I was pushed back. I saw sparks of blue electricity generate from his hand.
I countered with a roundhouse kick that caught Kazuya around his jaw. I went for a follow-up punch however Kazuya grabbed my fist before thrusting his head forward and colliding with a headbutt that made me stagger, avoiding being knocked over.
He tried to do a roundhouse kick of his own but I stepped back to avoid it and thrust my elbow forward only for that to be blocked and Kazuya's other foot to strike my side making me lurch to the left a bit.
The fight kept going, I didn't really know how well things were going. True I'd landed blows but so had he. Even as I thought this, I barely managed to block a punch only to have another slug my cheek right after it.
I landed a jab that struck Kazuya's chest and a karate chop to his shoulder. I went in for a punch to his face however I was grabbed by the shoulder and met with two almost slap-like kicks hitting me on either cheek, the last one nearly knocked me to the ground but I just about kept my footing. Spinning my torso, I managed to catch him with a palm thrust from one hand.
And it was at this point, my luck began to run out. I lifted my leg and brought my foot down, hitting Kazuya in the head. He stumbled before striking with a roundhouse kick again, this time it actually hit.
This was followed by the Mishima style's Wind God Fist. It hit my chin and left me stunned for a moment. I did recover and was about to land another palm thrust with both hands to attack from behind.
However Kazuya ducked under the attack. I knew what he was planning having read the report left by Eagle between the last tournament and this one. I lashed out to hit him however Kazuya began spinning building up electricity before finally leaping up into an uppercut. It hit me head-on and caused me to fall to the ground on my back.
I was about to get up and keep fighting. However before I could move, I felt a foot place firmly on my chest causing me to gag faintly. Kazuya glared down at me, expecting me to speak. I managed to gasp out. "There's nothing you could do, even if I told you!"
Kazuya snapped "Start talking!" I realized if I was to get out of this interaction alive, I would have to tell him something. Even if it was just enough to not give too much away. I went on to explain, choosing my words carefully.
"We were just..." I gasped at the weight on my chest before continuing "We were just observing. You were betrayed by G-Corporation. That's all!" Kazuya lifted his foot, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off me, literally. "I already know that! There's got to be something else that kept you and your partner around!"
I was suddenly met with a kick that caused me to roll across the ground. I began to try and get to my feet. "We don't know yet. We're still investigating, but you must know." This was my opportunity to get answers. I had a theory which lead me to ask. "What was under the temple?"
A coincidence isn't it? The temple at the Mishima Estate is destroyed. Heihachi dies along with it. And now some shadowy sponsor emerges announcing a new tournament after claiming the Mishima Zaibatsu.
My question caught Kazuya's attention, he stepped forward. "Under the temple? So, that's it." He trailed off before snapping "That damn Heihachi!" He shot me another glare and turned to walk away. Before he left though he stopped and gave me a sideways glance before asking something that caught me off guard.
"That other ninja, Eagle. Is he the son of Lee Chaolan?!"
I debated what to say. When Eagle was first taken in, he was still a child and I was still but a student. We'd worked together on numerous missions. He told me about his heritage after the last tournament. I also knew Lee Chaolan's connection to Kazuya. That's why I kept quiet.
Kazuya just let out a "Hmph!" In anger before saying "Your silence is the only answer I needed. I know he was at the temple that night. I ignored him because I had more important matters than wasting my time on him. Here though, I hope he gives me a better show than you did."
With that he left, leaving me breathing heavily, both in surprise and exhaustion. As soon as I knew Kazuya was gone though, I reached up to my earpiece and instantly began calling into it. Once an operator came on, I demanded I be patched through to Eagle.
Y/N POV
"What are you serious?!" I exclaimed into the earpiece. I had returned to the hotel and was stood on the balcony when Raven contacted me. Eliminated?! He'd just told me about his fight with Kazuya. If he knew of our operation, this made things more dangerous. I grumbled. "What now?"
Raven explained "You continue the mission as normal. I'm going to do some reconnaissance in the shadows, see what else I can find. Unfortunately now, I can't get directly involved in tournament matters."
I stated "Okay. I'll see what I can do." Raven asked "Who else caught on? I know that Manji Clan ninja Yoshimitsu mentioned it in the last tournament." I nodded "Yes, I had a run-in with the assassin Anna Williams, she seemed to draw the dots as well."
Before Raven could respond, I heard a voice above me asking "Ooh, talking about me are you?" I snapped my head up with wide eyes as a figure leapt down from the balcony above and swung down next to me.
"Surprised you'd be seeing me again so soon?"
