Chapter Ten: I Won't let go

Two days later

Zena hugged her uncle,

"Na lû e-govaned vîn, Uncle." (Until next we meet, Uncle) She said and pulled back, he looked down at her and bent down to her level to kiss her head.

"Na lû e-govaned vîn, Zena." He said and ruffled her hair. She huffed and smoothed down her hair before standing next to Thorin. The ponies had run off during the Troll mishap.

"Be carful on your journey, Oakenshield, these lands nowadays are crawling with Orcs." Elrond warned, Thorin only nodded before leading the Company out of Rivendell. He had his arm around Zena's shoulders as they walked, Gandalf had a small smile on his face, glad that his daughter is no longer afraid of Love.

Several hours later

Zena's POV

We started walking up a rocky mountain path in a line, one of us would slip or stumble, but we always caught one another before one of us fell to our death. Once you have a Dwarf's trust, you better not take it for granted, because it is hard to gain the trust of a Dwarf.

On account of it being a thin path, it was also pouring rain. Yea, not fun. It made the small path even more dangerous, that's when it happened.

The rocks started to come alive and attack each other, they threw boulders and hit each other. Everyone was yelling, but I could hear no one over the thunder and heavy rain.

I don't remember much after the rocks started to come alive. One minute I'm clinging to Kili when the path spilt and half of the Company was separated from the other half and the next minute I'm try to pull Bilbo up from falling to his death.

"Come on, Lads!" Dwalin shouted over the thunder, Bofur helped me pull Bilbo up. Right after we pulled Bilbo up, my grip slipped from the ledge and I fell when another boulder hit above us.

Why does all the bad shit happen to me?! Like...DYING?!?!

"Thorin!" I screamed and clung to a ledge lower than the one the Company was on.

"Zena!" I heard someone shout. I couldn't see who on account of my eyes being squeezed shut and the ran making everyone's voice sound the same. I started hyperventilating loudly and shaking,

"I don't wanna die again, I don't wanna die again..." I whimpered over and over again.

"Zena, you're not going to die again." I could tell it was Thorin, but I kept my eyes shut and repeated it over and over still.

"Zena look at me." I didn't listen and kept my eyes shut. "Look at me, âzyungâl..." He said soothingly. I looked up at him. "You're not going to die, âmralime... I promise."

(Listen to I won't let go by Rascal Flatts while reading the next paragraphs. I think that song fits the last bit of the chapter)

Thorin's POV

I could see the fear in her eyes when she finaly looked up and it my heart ache for her.

"Just keep looking at me." I said calmly, she slowly nodded.

"Who's the tallest?" Gandalf asked himself and looked at the Company. I ignored him and looked at the area around my One. She let out a fearful yelp when she started to slip,

"Th-Thorin!" She started to hyperventilate again and shake more. I bent down,

"Dwalin grab hold of my coat." I commanded. I chose him because I knew he was the stronger out of the rest of the Company. I leaned down over the ledge and felt him grip my coat tightly. I let out curses in Khuzdul when I noticed her eyes were squeezed shut and she put her head against her hands.

"Zena, open your eyes and grab my hand." I said and stretched my hand down to her while my other one held me up on the ledge. She whimpered when she slipped more.

"Zena, grab Thorin's hand." Bilbo said softly and kneeled by the edge.

"I don't wanna die...I don't wanna die..." I heard her whimper,

"Zena. Look. At. Me." I said in a more pressing tone. She lifted her head and looked at me, I couldn't tell if it was rain or tears running down her face. I leaned down further and stretched my arm and hand out more. I felt my coat slip out of Dwalin's grip a little because of the rain, I didn't care. I know I should care about falling to my death, but all I cared about was getting my One up to safety.

General POV

" Thorin your slipping." Dwalin growled under his breath. Fili and Kili also grabbed hold of Thorin's coat,

"Take my hand, âzyungâl, please... I lost you once, I will not lose you again." Thorin pleaded. Zena was hyperventilating a little less and looked at his hand, she gripped the ledge more when she slipped again.

"I...I'm scared..." She whispered.

"I know, âmrâlime. I won't let go, I promise you that." Thorin said quietly. The rain grew heavier and the thunder louder, the only light they had was when lightning struck. Zena looked at his hand and gripped the ledge more before reaching her hand up, her fingers grazed his before she brought her hand down quickly to grip the ledge when she slipped more than the other times.

"Can't you do something?" Bilbo asked Gandalf urgently.

"I am afraid not, Master Baggins..." He said sadly. Thorin scooted off the ledge more, his coat slipped more from the three Dwarves that were keeping him from falling over.

"Uncle!" Fili shouted some. Nori, Dori, and Ori grabbed hold of his coat as well.

"Try again, Zena, please." Thorin tried to keep the begging tone from his voice, but the tone came out anyway. Zena was hyperventilating hard and loud, she felt faint.

"I...don't....feel...good.." She said in between her breaths.

She reached up again and stretched.

He stretched down more.

Their finger tips touched before she slipped again.

She yelped but kept reaching for his hand.

Their eyes locked and Thorin now saw they were tears of fear falling down her face.

Another flash of lightning and boom of thunder hit. No one flinched at it.

The rain continued its relentless assault.

Zena's cold wet hand finally grasped his warm wet one, he held onto her tightly and her other hand came up and grasped his.

She was no longer hanging onto the ledge, if she slipped from his grip now then she would surely fall to her death and be gone forever.

"Don't let me go." She begged.

"I won't ever let go." He promised. He felt himself being pulled up by his coat and his grip was able to tighten on the ledge they were on with his other hand. Her nails dug into his wrist and he didn't care about the pain that radiated through his arm.

He pushed up from the ledge and they kept pulling on his coat. She was almost up to the ledge,

"I-I'm slipping!!" She yelled.

(Yup. Cliffhanger.)
