Chapter 3:Searching a Battlefield
I hear the explosion in the distance. I jump out of my chair and sprinted towards North Port, my anxiety grew with each breath. What the hell is wrong with people...were barely alive as it is. People ran away from the chaos, screams and angry shouts erupted ahead. Whlie most of the citizens fled from the violence in a desperate escape, they were leaving behind others less lucky to get away from the destructive mobs parading through the markets setting fire to food and other necessary resources, further advancing us towards our inevitable extinction. I run towards Luna's apartment building, I kept telling myself that the building was intact and she would be just fine, I turn the corner to see some of the building's floods were blown to shreds. Luna's apartment was in ruin, I didn't know what to think and I hoped that she had gone to the markets like she always does on a Saturday, I hope she did not sleep in like she always does.
I ran to the massive pile of rubble that lay on street, destroyed apartments and broken bodies filled the ground, bloody stone and cold rebar...the stench of fresh death was all around. I pull loose rock after rock, but still no Luna, tears had filled my eyes and grief had befell over my complexion. My friends were all I ever had for family, they were everything to me. A varity of military helicopter filled the air and commaned the rioters to disperse and surrender, while another told the civilians to go to their homes and that if they did not comply they will be charged with criminal disobediance. Our government was a joke and its people were vicious animals. I stand back on my feet, I needed to go to the fall out shelter, it was the only place I could think of that Luna could have gone.
I walked down the the ruined streets towards the shelter, the bodies of men and women of all ages lay pale and lifeless everywhere I looked. I wondered what had caused this and how those people got so many explosives. Gunfire roared in the distance, i walked on and on and everywhere I went death had followed. This reminded me of the days of the past, when the Minor Wars had began. How-when you shown great battle efficiency and promise-they gave nicknames and praise when you came out of the battlefield with bloody hands And a stained heart. How they would treat you like an item without your knowledge of it. But the names...Jack the Ripper, Ice Queen, The Tormentor, how they would try to make you forget your name and turn you into a weapon.
I snap out of my trance, seeing a thick concrete building:the fallout shelter. The building was dug into the ground, seeing that even though it was an island, the government thought it was still a good idea to build it in the ground. Its thick doors were shut, which meant some people were inside, so now all I had to do was hope that the security would let me in. The sound of gunfire didnt let up and was still as loud as before. I ring the alarm, hoping to alert the residences refuged inside and after a few anxious seconds the doors open. Armed guards stood at the entrance and soon stood down and ushered me inside. Now i needed to look for Luna and hope the riot stops soon. Soon I am taken to the resting hall, which was more like a 100x130 room that was covered in sleeping bags and bunkbeds.I walk down the aisles and slowly scan the faces of strangers. I see a pale skinned, black haired girl and the white sweater she wore. She liked black, but it had to be her!
I quicken my pace towards her, careful not to step on anyone. I was only a few feet away from her,"L-Luna!" I rather shout, the girl turns and my heart skips slightly: it was Luna Ruiz, but something seemed to be wrong with her.
