The Concert
"How's everyone doin' tonight?" Rather than straight answers, all Bon received was an enormous applause ricocheting off the walls of the venue. He grinned at the response, walking back and forth across the length of the stage. Angus would switch places with him, plucking a few notes as he did. "Good, good, that's great to hear!"
"I wish I could see him better," Annie said standing on the tips of her feet. Marley, being as tall as she was, was able to see the band pretty well, though they were still a good distance away. "Do you think I could get on your shoulders?"
"You ate six whole slices of pizza for dinner," Marley said. "You so much as stand on my foot and we'll fall through the floor."
"Rude," Annie muttered jumping a little. "Oh, I think he's waving at us!"
"He's not even facing us!"
"Don't ruin my moment, Marl! We love you, Bon!" Marley blushed as a few faces turned her direction. While the amount of women who showed up wasn't in any way small, there were a good number of young men who also enjoyed the hard, gritty rock and roll sound. Another thing to love about AC/DC was the appeal to any division.
Something hurled across the stadium through the air, Marley barely catching a glimpse before it fell on the stage with a thud. It didn't hit anyone, and Bon walked over to inspect it. "Somebody drop somethin'?"
Angus shouted something as well but without a microphone it was impossible to decipher. Annie looked to Marley with concern. "What happened?"
"I don't know, I couldn't see..." A group of men farther back on the other side of the stadium were shouting, their voices all mingled in one. Bon walked across the stage again and held his microphone over the crowd as if that would clear things up. Angus took it from him with Bon still holding onto it and looked in their direction.
"What the fuck are youse tryin' to do?" Letting go of the microphone, he backed up on the stage hearing another cheer come from the more polite members of the audience.
"I'm glad I didn't buy ninth row tickets," Annie mumbled. Marley could hardly hear her. Bon walked over to the unidentified object and kicked it with his foot, setting it in place on the stage.
"Watch your heads, mates," he said before kicking the object like a soccer ball back to the audience in the direction it came from. More cheers, a few more things flying across the stadium but none of them aimed at the band. Marley enjoyed the spectacle but began to wish she had brought a helmet. "Now now, we're not done yet, no need for a ruckus!"
Angus played a few more chords again, waiting for the signal to start. The crowd began to calm down after a minute, some of them whistling to go on. The lights above the stage changed a few colors, from blue to pink to green. As the show wore on, Marley was glad she had changed her clothes, a t-shirt being much more suitable for a stuffy stadium than a sweater. Annie elbowed Marley and grabbed her arm. "Look at that, look at that!" she yelled pointing at the stage. "Now how do you like that, he did see us this time!" It did look like Bon had spotted someone in the crowd, but the chances of it being them were astronomical. Immediately Bon's eyes were drawn to something else, and he took to speaking to the crowd again.
"This next one...this next one is one you're all familiar with, I'm sure. One you've all been waitin' for, yeah?"
Both women had recently discovered the last album produced by AC/DC, Let There Be Rock. It had become rather quickly Annie's favorite album, but Marley still preferred Powerage. It took a minute for either of them to recognize the song but when they did, Annie sent another sharp pain through Marley's arm with her elbow. "Listen, it's my favorite song!"
A sea of hands raised above their owner's heads and clapped along to the song. Annie jumped a few times trying to see above them. Marley laughed a bit at her struggle, Annie giving her a glare.
"Come on, help me!"
"Now?"
"Yes, I can't see!"
Marley looked around on all sides. There was room for them to act, but barely. Hoping not to run into anyone, she knelt down on the stadium floor while Annie climbed on top of her shoulders. Marley slowly stood up while Annie encouraged her to stand a little straighter. "How's this?"
"A little higher!" Marley stumbled a bit, thankful whatever food Annie ate seemed to disappear. She could still see the stage rather well herself, Annie cheering along with everyone else. Marley just hoped she wouldn't sing. "Oh, this is perfect, Marl, you should see this!"
"I'd love to," she gasped, Annie's weight suddenly dawning on her. She was momentarily distracted by the pause in the music, the guitar being absent from the show. Behind a sea of heads and arms she could see Angus, who had given his guitar to a roadie backstage, walk to the center for the stage and put his finger to his ear.
The crowd exploded, giving him the reaction he wanted and the confidence he needed. Annie looked down at Marley's brown head hoping to see an expression but couldn't, and Marley was just as confused as Annie. "What's he doing?"
"I don't know!" He removed his blazer, grasping it in one hand. He stretched his arm so as to hold it high above his head, and swing it like a sling. Phil, the drummer, kept the beat steady, and followed Angus closely for his silent cues. Marley blushed after watching him perform some...rather intimate acts with the article, and tossing it on the stage behind him. She tried scanning the area for Bon, wondering where he went off to. One by one Angus loosened the buttons on his shirt and shrugged it off, Annie beginning to cheer and whistle like most of the other young ladies present.
If her mother asked too many questions about the concert, Marley might have to become a nun.
The young man on stage raised his arms above his head, eliciting a roar of encouragement from the crowd. Running to one side ended the same, and running to the other side made them grow. Angus turned around, Marley, though bewildered and flushed, was curious to see what he would do. Annie seemed to have an idea as Marley heard her laugh and felt her tremble on her shoulders. Quick as a flash, and Marley wasn't sure she saw it right, but Angus gave the crowd what they asked for.
"Oh my God!" Annie yelled as she laughed, clapping her hands above her when he was finished. Marley felt a tap on her shoulder and she set Annie down on the ground again. "Did you see that? Did you fucking see that?"
Marley had turned beet red. She wasn't disgusted by what she saw, but certainly shocked. Though, she wasn't sure if it was a bad thing or not.
The concert ended about an hour later. They performed a few songs from their latest album, but a good amount were from the older ones. Right after Angus' show Bon had come back out to finish, continuing the setlist with a rather filthy ditty, The Jack.
Marley had never heard that one before.
Hoards of people exited the building, minute by minute the air growing less stagnant. Annie's hair was a wild mess, her cheeks flushed and her eyes sparkling. "I can't believe we got to see possibly the greatest live show since the Beatles!" she yelled. "Did you see Bon? And Angus? Oh, wasn't Cliff great?"
"Yeah...of course." Marley was still thunderstruck by what she saw that night. The music was incredible, but the performance was something else. Even the rude interruption halfway through was entertaining. Annie pulled Marley beside her to stand by the wall, waiting for everyone else to leave. "What are we doing?"
"Waiting to go backstage," Annie replied. Yeah, obviously.
"You have the passes?"
"Well, about that..." Marley raised an eyebrow. "I didn't actually buy any passes..." she said. "But we're still going to meet them!"
"How? We're not allowed in if we don't have passes, they'll throw us out!"
"Come on, live a little! They won't throw us out, we're too cute for the streets!" Annie punched Marley lightly on the shoulder.
"Looks don't mean shit to paid security guards," Marley said. "Why did you lie about the passes? I looked in your suitcase this morning and didn't see them, I knew you were pulling my leg!"
"I knew you would want to see them after the show," Annie said crossing her arms. "And you'd never have let me drag you here if you knew I was planning to sneak in." Marley huffed, knowing she had a point. "You know there's no point in arguing with me."
Looking toward the stage, Marley could see a few people, mostly young women, walking down a hidden hallway that led behind the curtain. "We could get in big trouble..."
"We were already in big trouble when we heard this band for the first time," Annie argued. "They've captivated us and now we have no choice but to follow them in their dirty deeds."
"Ann..."
"Come on! Don't you want to know what goes on behind that curtain?" Marley was pretty sure what happened behind that curtain, but gave them the benefit of the doubt. Even then, she was still a touch curious. And though they might get thrown out of the venue in an embarrassing way, it was the chance of a lifetime.
Annie scrounging money to buy passes would have been preferred, but too much to ask for.
"Follow me," Annie whispered. She took the path they saw the other people take, and acted as inconspicuous as possible. The hallway led them to a closed door, which had a 'No Smoking' sign. Marley was sure no one paid any attention to that sign. Annie opened it slowly, and sure enough she was right.
Right away they were hit with a cloudy sight, a few people discernible in the fog. Marley coughed and waved her hand back and forth. Annie, having smoked before, wasn't too fazed. "It's a pool hall in here!" Marley whispered.
"It's just the backstage area," Annie whispered back. "They're all like this."
"How many have you seen?"
"Only one, but it's obvious, isn't it? Come on." She waved her hand for Marley to follow her, the two girls hiding behind a trunk when someone got too close. Annie, crouched on the floor, took a step back as someone walked past them, and stepped on Marley's hand.
"Shit!" she whispered.
"Sorry, I'm sorry, someone was coming! Are you okay?"
"Look out!" A man wearing a black shirt and a lanyard around his neck came walking in their direction, reaching the trunk. He opened it, appearing to not have seen the women crouched behind it. Grabbing what he needed, he left the lid open giving the two stowaways more cover. Both of them let out their breath.
"This might be harder than I thought..."
"No one's looking, we can leave if we're quick!"
"No! I wanna meet them, and so do you. I'm not leaving without a fight!"
"Annie-" She was cut off by someone slamming the lid to the trunk closed and sitting on it, his voice responding to one on the other side.
"Check with Bon about that, I haven't seen it."
"It's Malcolm!" Annie mouthed with a grin. Marley didn't respond, too scared to make any sudden movements. Ushering her forward, Annie led the silent charge to the side of the room where another door was, this being used for a closet. Without waiting until no one was watching, she broke forward and hurled the door open, beckoning Marley to follow her. Hesitating a minute, Marley stood and ran, twisting her ankle in the process and throwing herself into the closet. Annie closed the door after her.
"Are you crazy?" Marley whispered limping. "They probably saw us!"
"They probably just thought we were spare roadies getting something out of the closet," Annie reasoned smoothing her shirt out. Attempting to catch her breath, Marley pointed a finger at the door.
"And what if a real roadie needs something from the closet and we're in here?" she asked. Before Annie could answer and before Marley could scold anymore, the door behind her opened, the two women backing up to see who it was.
"Well well well. What have we here?"
