Chapter 25: Down to the Tunnels

(Dream)

The echo of voices dance dance around Josie's ears as she snaps her eyes open and finds herself in a bar...or a inn.  She walks around, passing by many people who looked like they were dressed in the 1700s.  Laughing, drinking, some where playing music with violins and flutes.  It was weird.  No one could see her, but in some strange way, she felt like she's been here before.

"Diana, sweet lass, have you come to finally accept my hand in marriage?" A voice slurs out.

Josie snaps her head to the voice and sees a woman with long, wavy blood red hair move to the table where an old drunk man held up a metal cup.

The woman giggles and speaks with a French accent, "Bruno, you big lug, you should know I'm promised to another." She pinches his cheek.

Bruno lets out a loud guffaw , "Come run away with me, love.  What does he have that I don't?"

Diana giggles and flips her hair, Josie starts gasping when she sees Diana's face.  It's her face!

"He's one of the King's men and he has my heart."  She smirks and pours liquid into his cup.

"He's a very lucky man to have the heart of such a beautiful and caring woman like you." Bruno smiles drunkenly.

"Besides, Bruno, what would your wife think?"  She tuts and giggles as she moves to the bar.

Josie moves to where Diana went to, it was so weird.  Diana looks so much like her, but her eyes were so blue and her hair.  It looked too fake to be real.  Diana flips her hair again to pour mead into a pitcher then turns to walk towards a table to pour a drink for a man.

"Thank you, sweet lass." The man smirks.  His hair was tied back behind him, his green eyes starred her down with such lust.  Diana felt uncomfortable, but she had to do her job.  As she was about to leave, he snaps a hand out to grab her wrist, making her drop her pitcher.

She gasps in fright and yanks away, but he was too strong.

"Such a beautiful treasure." He purrs.

"Let me go!" She shouts.

Men start to stand up and help, but then a female hand snaps out and punches the guy in the face.

The man was now on the floor, gripping his nose, he looks up at the woman who had long black, wavy hair, fair creamy skin and dark brown eyes starring down at him in anger.

"Allison?!"  Josie exclaims.

Suddenly, the voices melt away, nothing but silence.  A man walks up behind Diana and she turns with a big smile of relief on her face and wraps her arms around his neck, kissing him lovingly and deeply.  All Josie could see was the back of him.  He was tall, broad shoulder, with a long ponytail of black hair.  He reaches up and caresses her cheek with his tanned hand with such tenderness.

Familiar voices start to speak around her...Josie looks around and sees everything becoming dark, fading away from her.

"What happened?!"

"She fainted...her mom...dead....kidney....transplant."

The echos become louder.  Josie covers her ears, trying to block the voice out, but it was too loud.  Finally, she just screams and screams.

Josie screams and snaps her eyes open, shooting up to a sitting position.  She snaps her head around, trying to figure out where she was.  Panting, she sees Stiles, Mason, Malia, Theo, Lydia looking at her.

"What happened?"  She gasps.

"You fainted.  Are you ok?"  Theo asks, reaching for her hand.   She snaps he hand back and glares out him.

"I'm fine.  Don't touch me again." She snarls.

"Yup, she's back." He says bitterly.

"Where's Scott?"  She asks, ignoring Theo.

"He's still connected with Corey." Lydia says.

Josie gets up, "We should go back up there."

"Jo, are you gonna be ok?"  Stiles asks.

"I'll be fine.  First, let's worry about Hayden and Liam.  Then, we can worry about me." She waves them off, even though they all shared worried looks, she ignores them and heads upstairs to see Scott and Corey still in trance, but wasn't long till Scott and Corey start gasping.

Scott yanks away from Corey and falls against his chair while Corey falls to the floor, but Mason helps Corey up.

"Is he okay?"  Lydia exclaims.

"What the hell did you do to me?"  Corey groans and grips the back of his neck, glaring at Scott.

"You'll be all right."  Scott says.

"There's blood."  Corey says as he looks at his fingers.

"You'll heal."  Scott bites out and grabs a notebook.

"Scott..." Stiles tries to speak, but Scott cuts him off.

"He'll be fine!"  Scott snaps at them and frantically tries to remember everything he saw.   "Listen...I think it worked.  I saw something."  He starts drawing on the notebook.  "There were tunnels.  Pipes along the walls.  There were these huge blue pipes at the entrance."

Stiles and Lydia moves to see what he drew.

"Two on both sides."  Scott adds, showing them the picture.

"Wait a second I know this.  I've seen this before.  That's one of the tunnels I used to skateboard in.  Remember my dad caught me one time and told me to never go back?" Stiles says.

"It's the water treatment plant."  Lydia speaks up.

"That's where they are.  That's where we'll find Liam and Hayden."  Scott says, determinedly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Liam slowly stirs from his slumber.  He snaps his eyes open and sees that he's not in the lab anymore.  He turns his head to the side and sees Hayden lying beside him.  Panting, he moves to touch her arm to wake her up.
"Hayden? Hayden, wake up." He speaks softly.
Hayden gasps and wakes up, she winches when she feels the pain again in her side.  She lifts her shirt up and still sees the black ooze.  She whimpers in pain then looks around.
"Where are we?" She asks as they both sit up.
"I don't know."  He shakes his head.
They were now in a small room, pipes all over the wall and a large gated fence covering a large hole in the wall as the sun pours over them.
Liam grunts and gets up to his feet, walking slowly to the fence.
Hayden grunts in pain, clutching her side as her face scrunches.  She looks up and sees him examining the fence.
"Careful."  She says.
Liam reaches and touches the fence and grunts in pain as electricity shocks him in a very painful way.  He flies back and lands next to Hayden.  Groaning, he feels Hayden helping him to sit up.
A small giggle is made behind them, they snap their heads towards the sound and sees a teenage boy sitting in the shadows behind them, leaning against a wall, "Sorry, I probably should've warned you."  He says.
"Who are you?" Liam asks.
"My name's Zach.  And I think the better question is...What am I?"  Hayden and Liam frown at this question.  "It's okay.  I'm just like you.  One of the experiments."  Zach says.  He starts to crawl out from the shadows, close to them.  "Hey, maybe you could help me with something.
The guys, in the masks They took something off my back.  I don't know what it was, but I can feel part of it still there."  He says.
"You want us to look?"  Liam asks.
"Is that okay?"  Zach asks a little embarrassed.
Hayden looks at Liam, frowning and Liam looks at her.  They were both cautious, but curious as well.  Liam nods at Zach in agreement.
Zach turns and grunts as he starts to lift his shirt.  He winches in pain as he feels the shirt brush against his wounds.  Hayden's eyes widen in shock as well as Liam's.  Zach had two wing like bones protruding from his skin.  Whatever he had attached to him, were cut off, but the skin and shoulder bones still twitched, insect-like.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Scott starts to pace down the stairs as everyone trails behind him.

"Scott Scott, slow down.  Just think for a second, okay? Mason should be going." Stiles says.

"Liam's my best friend.  I'm going." Mason protests and stands next to Scott.

"Oh, did you suddenly get super wolf powers? I wasn't aware of that development."  Stiles says sarcastically.

"Well, if you're not going, I could use the help."  Scott scoffs at him.

"No, I'm coming just as soon as I talk to my dad.  They're moving the body and he wants to make sure that this time no one steals it."  Stiles says.

"How's he gonna do that?"  Josie asks.

"I don't know.  But whoever took the last one was strong enough to flip my Jeep."  Stiles says.

Everyone looks worried, then Malia had an idea.

"We can bring Theo."  She says.

Theo starts to protest, "Maybe I better stay here.  You know, in case the Doctors decide to make a house call for Corey."  He says.

"Scott, Stiles is right.  We need to slow down and think."  Lydia says.

"I am thinking about how Liam and Hayden could already be dead."  Scott says, worry seeps in his voice.

"You could've hurt him, Scott.  Really hurt him."  Lydia points out, meaning Corey.

Scott begins to feel bad, but he had to do what needed to be done.  He opens his mouth, but nothing comes out.

"I have to find Liam."  He says and begins to move.

"I'm going too." Josie follows him.

Scott turns, "No, you should go with Stiles."

"Scott, I can help.  You were right.  It was my fear that was blocking my powers.  I'm not afraid of them anymore.  I'm more afraid for Hayden and Liam.  My powers will help us.  I know it."  She says.

Scott sighs, he didn't have time for an argument, "Fine, come on." He says and paces to the door.  Mason and Malia follows them, but Stiles calls out to Malia.

"Hey, text me.  For anything."  He says.

"I got it." She calls over her shoulder and heads out.

"Anything at all.  Okay?"  He calls out.

After they leave, Lydia and Stiles carried a worried look.  But, Theo smirks as none were looking.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, they nurse transports the body of the teenage girl Melissa found in her kitchen.  Cops surround the body, armed and ready for anything and anyone who will come for it.  One deputy guards the elevator, another guards the first door, Deputy Clark guards the front entrance of the morgue.

Parrish stands guard in the morgue.  He was worried though.  He wasn't sure if the blackouts will happen again.  He just hopes and pray it won't.

Liam gets up and move to the fence again, slowly bringing a finger on the metal and was shocked again. He groans and grips his hand. The current was strong. He lets out a frustated grunt and goes back to sit next to Hayden.

"We're not getting out of here." Zach says, simply.

"You could be a little optimistic." Hayden scoffs.

"It's kinda hard when you watch three people get dragged out of here screaming." Zach says.

"What happened to 'em?" Liam asks.

"They were failures. That's all they said." Zach says, looking down solemnly. "First, you forget.
You don't know who you are or what you're doing. Then you get violent. I watched two of them almost kill each other. One of them had a nasty looking cut just like that." Zach says as he gestures to Hayden's wound dripping with black ooze. She covers it with her shirt, looking down with worry.

"Don't worry. Black is okay. It's only really over when you start bleeding other stuff. When it starts turning silver..." Zach says.

"Mercury." Liam corrects.

"That's when they know you're really a failure." Zach says.

"How many more failures are there supposed to be?" Liam asks.

"Who knows? But doesn't it make you wonder what the success is going to look like? I mean, what are we turning into? Something with claws and fangs?" Zach asks, incredulous.

"Something with wings?" Liam asks.

"Something worse." Hayden says as he voice shakes. Liam wraps an arm around her, pulling her close to him and lets her rest her head on his shoulder.

Josie drove everyone in her car, she pulls up into the front of the plant. Everyone gets out as quickly as they could and headed for the entrance to take them down to where, hopefully, Hayden and Liam were. Scott grabs Josie's hand and together they pace inside.

They go down a long flight of stairs till they finally get to the tunnel that Scott saw. Mason moves to stand next to Scott. Malia looks around, trying to catch a scent.

"Liam!" She calls out.

"Can you catch a scent?" Mason asks.

"There's too many chemicals." Scott shakes his head.

Mason sighs, "Then, this might take a while."

Josie shuts her eyes and calls the earth. Mason frowns and looks down behind them, hearing the ground crack. Roots start to erupt from the debris.

"Just in case. We have no idea how big this area is, we might as well be in a maze for all we know. The roots will follow us so we won't get lost." She says.

Scott nods, "Let's go."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stiles paces down the hospital, speaking to the mechanic as frustration builds up when they ask him about what happened to his jeep.
"You tell me, man. You're the mechanic. If the gas tank didn't rupture and nothing electrical was burned, then how did the fire start? Spontaneously combusted? That's your answer? Are you kidding?" He was about to tell the mechanic off till Sheriff yanks the phone out of his hand and hangs it up.
"What are you doing here?" He asks.
"Dad, you gotta leave the body, okay? Leave it and let whoever wants to take it just take it. Trust me." Stiles says.
"I'm doing my job, Stiles." Sheriff says and turns to head to the elevator.
Stiles scoffs, "Yeah, you've been real busy. Arresting people you know are innocent." Stiles says sarcastically.
"Go home. Now." Sheriff gets into the elevator, but so does Stiles.
"This is not up for debate." Sheriff says, frowning at his son.
"Well, then, I'm not leaving." Stiles protests.
Sheriff sighs and looks to notice an ID card a nurse was carrying. That reminds him about what Clark told him. About the card for the library. As the elevator doors shut, he turns to Stiles, "You know, Clark mentioned something about, uh, key cards for the library. Do you all have after-hours access?"
"Yeah. Yeah, we do. I'd show you mine, but I lost it a couple of weeks ago." Stiles says, keeping his cool.
Sheriff eyes him, studying his reactions. Guess he was telling the truth...but...who knows.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Edward and Kira snuggle on the bed, trying to read the Dread Doctors book, but it was still too hard for them.

Kira sighs, "Are you understanding this yet?" She asks.

Edward rubs his eyes, "No. You?" He asks.

Kira groans in frustration and throws the book across the room till it hit the wall near the door.

Noshiko frowns as she comes in, picking the book up.

"I can't help but notice your frustration." She says.

"We're the only ones who still hasn't finished reading it. And everything that started going wrong with me, started with them." Kira sighs and leans on Edward's chest. Edward wraps his arms around her, rubbing her arms.

Noshiko walks over to sit near them on the bed, "If it's the language that's confusing the fox...Maybe you should stop trying to understand it."

"Huh?" Kira was confused.

"The story itself is confusing the fox. Try not reading the story." Noshiko says, as she flips through a few pages.

"How do I do that?" Kira asks.

Before Noshiko could reply, Edward figures it out, "Read it backwards." He says.

Noshiko and Kira looks over to him. Noshiko was impressed but Kira was still confused.

"In Japan, most books are printed with the start of the story in the back of the book, not the front like in America. Our foxes are Japanese, so let's tap into those sides." He says.

Now, Kira was getting it.
