Chapter 16: She did It!

Theo let Malia drive his truck on the empty road.  So far so good, she was doing great, but, Theo believed she could do better than this.  He sighs, bored at the speed limit she's doing.  No one follows the stupid speed limit.  He looks over to her hands.  He laughs, 10 and 3.  So typical.  He shakes his head in disbelief.

"We can go a little faster, if you want."  He suggests.

Malia keeps her eyes on the road, "I'm doing the speed limit."

"Nobody does the speed limit."  Theo scoffs.  "You also don't have to hold the wheel like that.  Put your hand here."  He takes her right hand and guides it lower.

Malia shivers a little at his touch.  What the hell?

"Like this.  Better?"  He gives her his charming smile.

It was.  It was so much better.  She begins to feel more comfortable....till the flashbacks started again.

She places her hands on top of the wheel...like her mother did that night.  She remembers her little sister sitting next to her, playing with her little baby doll.

Malia's breath starts to pick up, her foot unconsciously presses down on the gas as the flashbacks keep coming.

"Okay, I said a little faster.  Not Mach 5."  Theo laughs.  But, he notices something was wrong.  "Malia, you okay?"

Malia didn't answer.  She couldn't move, except for her foot which kept pressing down on the gas harder.

"Hey, slow down."  Theo reaches to take the wheel but she jerks it to the side that makes him slam back.  She speeds up more.  Everything around her seems to have stopped.  She seemed frozen.  Her breathing picks up.  She could barely hear Theo yelling at her.

"Malia, stop!"  His voice muffles around her. "Stop the car! Stop the car!"

She finally slams on the brakes and jumps out of the truck.  Running out on to the middle of the road.  She collapses on to her knees.  Spacing out as Theo continues to call out to her.

"Malia! Malia!"

Panting heavily, Malia digs her nails into the pavement as the memories continue to fill her mind.

"Malia? Malia."  Theo continues to call out to her, but she wasn't listening.  All she could do was just sit there on her knees...remembering that night.  The night when she lost her foster mom and sister.

She remembers someone in the middle of the road.  Lights were shining bright around the figure.  She couldn't see who it was, but she could see the guns in the person's hands.  Aiming them at her mom.  Screaming.  Gunshots going off.  Her mom gripping the wheel as tight as she could to get away.  Her sister screaming in fear, clutching her dolly.

Her mother turned sharply and the gunshots wouldn't stop till her mother crashes.

"Malia."  Theo calls out again as a car approaches them.  She was on her knees, on the other side of the road, locked in a daze as the headlights shinned in her eyes.

"Malia, come on, get up."  He reaches to grab her but she wouldn't move.  Theo worriedly looks up at the car drawing closer and closer.  "Malia, come on, we gotta get up.  Come on!"  He yanks her hard and pulls her out of danger's way.  They both fall back on road, missing the car by inches.

Malia pants heavily as she's snapped out of her flashbacks.  Realizing where she was and knowing now what really happened that night.  All she could think was pain....and anger.

"It was her."  She pants out.

"What?"  Theo frowns, confused.

"It was her.  She was there."

"Who?"

Malia turns in Theo's arms,  her eyes were laced with pain, emotional pain, "The Desert Wolf."

Days passed since that night at Eichen House, everyone was worried about the outcome.  At least they have gotten a few answers.  Theo dropped Malia off at her house, she was still in shock with everything, but other than that, she was OK at least.  Lydia and Stiles made it out about 15 minutes after Edward, Kira, and Scott.  Josie was still inside.  Frozen in fear.  She couldn't move.  She couldn't risk it.

"Where's Josie?"  Scott asks.

"She didn't come out?"  Stiles looks around, seeing a half burnt Edward clutching on to Kira.

"We got separated when the doctors came."  Lydia says.

Scott looks back at Eichen house, worry for his love.

Josie slowly peeks from the laundry basket, seeing and hearing anything that tells her that they are still here, but it was way too quiet.  She slowly gets up and walks towards the door-frame.  Peeking out slowly.  So far so good, nothing.  Trembling, she paces out the door, looking behind her to make sure they weren't there.  She couldn't hear anything.  The alarm shut off a while ago.  As she makes a turn for the corner, she shouts in fear as a hand grips her by the throat and slams her into the wall.  She whimpers and looks away as the Surgeon leans in closer, she could feel the cold metal of his mask pressing against her cheek.

"Diana...So long has it been.  Not her, but spirit is strong inside."  His mask makes hissing sounds against her face.  "In time, we shall succeed and you will be ready as well."  He reaches up and brushes his hand over her hair, moving down to her side where her scar lies.  "Success."  He uses his free hand and grabs her hand.  She jerks it back but he was stronger.  He opens her palm and places something in her hand.  "He's never forgotten."  He whispers.

Josie doesn't remember what happened next.  All she remembers is waking up on the floor and Stiles was there shaking her awake.

Stiles helps her up and throws her arm over his shoulders, helping her out of the building.  Scott was waiting for them at the entrance.  As soon as he sees her, he rushes to her.

"Josie, are you ok?"  He asks.

Josie swallows hard, frowning in confusion, "I...I think so."

"What happened?"  He asks.

Josie shakes her head, "I don't...I don't remember."

Lydia slowly walks closer to her, looking at Josie's hand, "Josie...what is that?"

Josie frowns and looks at her hand, clutching to something.  She opens it and reveals a ring.  An emerald ring.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lights of red and blue, flashing every inch all over the school yard.  That was all you could see.  A few of the town's deputies exit their cars and trucks.  Flashing their lights all over.  A call was made to the school.  Something about destruction against public property.  As they get to the field, Deputy Clark shines her lights down on the grass and comes across...a hole.
The other deputy walks towards the main circuit breaker and pushes the switch to turn the filed lights on.  One by one, the lights shine over the field...reveling, not just one, but eight...eight empty holes.
Back at the Sheriff's station, Sheriff looks up at the two pictures he had pinned to his board.  One of Tracy and one of Lucas.  He marks them both out.  Both gone, dead.
"Chimeras."  Sheriff sighs, how much more could he take?
"Two dead Chimeras."  Stiles says behind him, remind him.  Malia stands next to him.
"And eight new ones." Malia states.
"So, that's 10 in all." Stiles says.
"I'm thinking maybe 11."  Sheriff says as he pins up a new picture.
To Stiles' horror, it was Donovan's picture.  He stares at that face.  Remembering that night, Donovan's face as he died.
"Our station tech guys confirmed something for me...."  He shows them the security footage from Donovan's disappearance from the cell.  "They said, both the holding cell lock and cameras could have malfunctioned because of something electromagnetic."  Sheriff reaches for the book Malia brought.  The Dread Doctors.  And looks over it.  "You said that, uh, these guys..."
"Dread Doctors."  Malia says.
"Are we really calling them that?"  He asks in disbelief.
"So they broke Donovan out?"  Malia asks.
"It's how they got into Eichen, isn't it?" Sheriff asks.
Malia scoffs in realization, but Stiles was quiet.
"Donovan's a Chimera."  She moves to stand next to Sheriff as they both look at Donovan's picture.
"Yeah.  But Is he a failure like Lucas and Tracy?" Sheriff asks.
Stiles looks down in guilt and turns away.
"If he is, he's probably dead."  Malia reaches for the red marker and was about to mark Donovan out, but Sheriff stops her.
"Not until I've seen a body." Sheriff states.  He turns to look at Stiles, frowning in confusion as Stiles keeps his back towards them, head down and gripping his hands.
"You're uncharacteristically quiet."  Sheriff says, eyeing Stiles.
"Yeah...Sorry, I'm, uh I'm just trying to think about it.  Uh...These are all teenagers, right?  So, now shouldn't we be trying to figure out why these teenagers? If the Dread Doctors, if they went through all that...Burying them, killing them, breaking one of them out of jail..." Stiles points out.
"They couldn't have been chosen at random."  Sheriff shakes his head, but agrees with Stiles' theory.
"They had to have something in common."  Malia says.
"Something that made them right for this experiment."  Sheriff says.
Malia turns to look at Donovan's picture.
"Something that made them special."  Stiles says.
(Josie's outfit for the day ^^^^)
Josie sat quietly on a bench as Scott and Theo discuss about who could be the chimeras that were buried in the lacrosse field.  She couldn't keep up, all she could think about was that night at Eichen House.  She couldn't remember what happened, but she knew it was terrible.  She still kept that ring.  In fact, she was holding it right now, looking over it.  Where did it come from?  For some reason, she felt drawn to it.  Like it held some sort of importance to her.  Scott wanted her to get rid of it, but she couldn't.  She felt it had answers...to something.  She scratches around the area of her scar, but winces.  She pulls her shirt up and sees...bruises.  Finger prints.  What?
"So, basically, we're looking for abnormal behavior?" Theo asks as he and Scott look over to all down below them.  The students.
"Anyone acting a little off or a little weird."  Scott says.
"Isn't everyone a little weird in high school?"  Theo points out.
"Yeah, good point."  Scott nods and turns to Josie, he takes her hand in his and holds her close.
"You ok?"  Theo asks her.
She turns to face him, she nods, "Yeah.  Just...shaken up a little."  She gives him a small smile.
Theo smiles back and looks down to her hand, he sees her fingers playing with something.  Something...familiar.
"What's that?"  He asks.
Josie looks down and brings up the ring, "I don't know.  What happened at Eichen House, I somehow came across this.  I don't really remember."
Theo takes the ring and looks at it.  Yes, this was the ring.  He thinks back when he told the doctors that Scott and his pack were going to Eichen House, he remembers seeing the surgeon go to his private area.  After, they left, before he went to Malia.  He went back there and saw this ring.  He couldn't understand why though.  Why give Josie this ring?  He gives Josie the ring back and the three of them make their way down the stairs.
"You remember Tracy went on a killing spree after reading that?"
Scott was hesitant, "You think it's a bad idea?"
"I think Malia almost getting run down by a car could've been bad."  Theo says sarcastically.  "Well, that's why you guys haven't finished it, right?"
"We're going to."  Josie says, placing the ring in her pocket.
"Scott, I came here hoping to find a pack.  I wasn't planning on watching one fall apart."  Theo says.
"The book's all we've got." Scott states.
"Then I'll read it too."
Scott and Josie look over to him in shock, Scott nods, but Josie wasn't so sure.
"My mom's book club usually has more wine."  Lydia says, sarcastically as they all stand in Scott's living room, looking down at the main book of the Dread Doctors along with several copies.
"Well, they also probably didn't read books that cause violent hallucinations."  Josie says back, sarcastically.
"That's why Malia's here."  Scott says.
"So none of us go running into traffic?"  Kira asks.
"Or worse."  Scott sighs.
"Like what happened to Judy."  Malia says.  Everyone looks at her in confusion.  "Chapter 14."
Lydia reaches down and grabs the main book, "Maybe I should have my mother read it.  She might remember a girl with a tail leaping off the ceiling and attacking everyone."
"Yeah, if it works."  Stiles says, doubt in his voice.
"It has to."  Lydia says, everyone could see how tense she was.
"What does that mean?"
Swallowing hard, "I think I saw them during my surgery.  When I look at the cover of the book...It's almost like..."
"A memory trying to surface."  Theo fills in.
Everyone looks up at him.
"Yeah."  Lydia says.
"Isn't that what Valack wanted when he wrote it?"  Edward asks.
"If they did something to me, I want to know what it is." Lydia takes a seat and begins to read.  Stiles was next.  Then, Josie.  Scott, Theo, Edward, and Kira.
Josie takes a deep breath and begins to read...word for word.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hours have passed, and some were barely finished with the book.  Some could barely even stay awake from this.  Scott blinks several times to stay awake and read more.  Kira and Edward were trying to keep up, but Kira.  For some reason, the words seemed like gibberish to her eyes.  She could just be tired.  She was, very tired.

Theo flips a page and looks up at everyone, especially Josie.  Josie looks up and catches him starring.  She frowns at him, he just smiles lovingly at her.

He looks back down at the book when Scott looks up.

"Anyone feel anything yet?"  Scott asks.

"Tired."  Kira murmurs softly.

"Hungry."  Lydia says as her stomach growls.

"I think he meant the book."  Josie says.

Lydia looks up at her, realizing her mistake, she blushes a little in embarrassment.

Malia and Stiles were making coffee for everyone in the kitchen.  As Malia pours coffee in the cups, she catches Stiles rubbing his shoulder, wincing in pain.  She sniffs and smells blood...Stiles' blood.

"What did you do to your shoulder?"  She asks.

"What are you talking about?"  Stiles asks.

"I can smell the blood.  What happened?"  Malia places the coffee pot down as Theo turns to listen into their conversation.

"Jeep died on me again.  I went to check the engine, the hood fell on it."  Stiles says.

Malia could hear his heart, it skipped.  He was lying.  Why?

"Wait, so, how much How much do you remember anyway? With the accident, did it play like a movie in your head or was it like being completely in it again?"  Stiles asks.

"In it."  Malia answers.

"Was it just the crash? Nothing else?"  Stiles asks.

Malia thinks back...it's wasn't nothing else.  But, she couldn't tell him.  Not till she finds out why he's lying to her.

"Nothing."  She shakes her head.  She turns and catches Theo listening.  Theo looks around again.

Kira rubs her eyes and bookmarks her page.  Putting it on the table near her.

Scott looks up and sees Kira lying in Edward's arms.

"You're not giving up, are you?"

"Just resting my eyes."  Kira murmurs softly and falls asleep in Edward's arms.  Edward smiles and kisses her head and turns back to read the book.

Josie squirms in her spot, uncomfortable.  She frowns and reaches in her pocket.  The ring kept digging into her side.  She couldn't get comfortable.  She takes the ring out and looks at it.  She frowns when she sees something on the band.  An inscription, but it was dirty.  She grabs a tissue paper and rubs it.  Getting the dirt and whatnot off it.  She blows on it and reads the inscription.

~My Diana, my moon, my love forever, S.~
