Chapter 61 [~|~] The Chase

Azara leaned down to hand Sokka some supplies as Toph jumped off Appa's back and onto the fur-covered ground. "Hey, you guys picked a great campsite. The grass is so soft," Toph praised, wriggling her toes in Appa's white fur, causing Azara and Sokka to pause.

"That's not grass. Appa's shedding," Sokka replied, as Katara wrinkled her nose in digust.

"Oh, gross!"

"That's not gross, it's just part of spring! You know, rebirth, flowers blooming and Appa gets a new coat," Aang corrected causing Azara to chuckle as she handed down another bag.

"Ah, the beauty of spring," Katara sighed sarcastically before Appa sneezed, releasing more white fur into the air. "Stop! Appa, stop! Ugh!" Katara waved her arms in the air as Appa's fur coated all of them.

"It's not that bad, Katara! It makes a great wig!" Sokka pointed out, turning around with a tall white wig atop his head, causing Azara to chuckle lightly.

"And a great beard!" Aang added, walking over with Appa's fur covering his chin. Katara stared at her brother and Aang with an unimpressed expression on her face.

"I'm just glad we have another girl in the group, because you two are disgusting," Katara stated as Sokka and Aang laughed at each other. Toph walked in between the two of them, her arms behind her back.

"Excuse me, does anyone have a razor? Because I've got some hairy pits!" Toph announced, holding her arms up to show Appa's fur tucked into her sleeves. Sokka, Aang, and Toph laughed before Aang sneezed, his airbending throwing him back into Appa's side. He dropped to the ground with more white fur covering his entire backside. Azara and Katara joined in laughing as the group enjoyed the moment of peace.

The sun started to set when they decided to formally make camp. Azara smiled up at Sokka as he handed her a pile of sticks and moved to prepare the fire for the night. Stacking the twigs and larger branches, Azara crouched down and lit the fire with a small flame from her fingertip. After the flame caught, Azara stood up and moved the pot of water over the flame to start preparing dinner.

After handing Azara some food to add to the water to make a soup, Katara glanced over at Toph, who was leaning back on a rock with her arms tucked under her head and a piece of grass in her mouth. Walking over, Katara smiled lightly at Toph. "So Toph, usually when setting up camp, we try to divide up the work," Katara spoke gently, her arms at her sides.

"Hey, don't worry about me. I'm good to go," Toph shrugged, not changing her position.

"Well, actually what I'm trying to say is, some of us might fetch water, while someone else might set up the fire pit, or put up the tent. Even Momo does his fair share," Katara continued as Momo jumped up onto her shoulder and dropped some nuts into her hand. Katara smiled and held out her hand to show Toph that everyone had a role.

"Katara, I'm fine. I can carry my own weight. I don't need a fire, I've already collected my own food, and look, my tent's all set up," Toph listed, bending a rock tent around herself as she sat up.

"Well, that's great for you, but we still need to finish—"

"—I don't understand what's the problem here!" Toph snapped, causing Azara to glance up at the two of them with concern.

"Never mind," Katara huffed, walking back over to Azara, who was stirring the bubbling pot slowly.

"Everything alright?" Azara asked cautiously as Katara took over handling dinner.

"I'm just frustrated," Katara replied, bending out the soup into four separate bowls.

"Well, we have to give her some time to adjust. She just got here a few days ago, it could take some time," Azara spoke, hoping to diffuse the tension before it all blew up in their faces. The last thing they needed was infighting. Katara sighed and nodded.

"You're probably right. I should go easier on her," Katara nodded, before sipping at her soup.

"I'm sure everything will work itself out eventually," Azara smiled in encouragement, before turning around to call Aang and Sokka over. However, she couldn't help but laugh as Aang dropped Appa's saddle onto Sokka. "When you're done crushing Sokka, dinner's finished," she called out to them as Sokka struggled underneath the saddle.

"Ooh, dinner!" Aang exclaimed, jumping down, and hurrying over to the fire as Sokka pulled himself out from under Appa's saddle. Sokka trudged over, plopping down next to Azara, who handed him a bowl of soup.

"Thanks," Sokka sighed, rubbing his back in pain as Azara glanced over at him with concern.

"Is your back sore?" Azara asked quietly, sipping lightly at her soup.

"Well, if someone stopped dropping Appa's saddle on me," Sokka stated pointedly at Aang, who smiled innocently in response. Placing her bowl of soup on the ground, Azara held her hands over the fire, gathering heat before swirling her hands into a ball, trapping the heat.

"Let me know if this is too hot," she warned, before holding a hand over Sokka's back in the spot where he had been rubbing earlier. Sokka hissed for moment, before relaxing back into the heat.

"You know, these heat tricks of yours are much appreciated," Sokka commented as Azara blushed before adding more heat.

"Where did you even learn the technique?" Katara asked, looking over curiously.

"I combined the healing techniques I learned at the North Pole and my uncle's teachings about bending heat. Though, he only mentioned the technique for heating up tea, not healing sore backs," Azara joked as she released her hand, allowing the heat to dissipate back into the air. "Hopefully its useful in the future."

They finished up their meals before preparing for bed. Azara watched Katara approach Toph again as she set up her sleeping bag next to Sokka's. "I'm worried about your sister and Toph," Azara spoke softly as she turned to Sokka, who was already in his sleeping bag.

"Eh, there's always tension in the beginning. I'm sure it'll pass," Sokka shrugged, as Azara got into her own sleeping bag.

"I guess you're right," Azara sighed as she could see Katara and Toph arguing again. But she reminded herself that her own introduction to the group had its bumps. As Katara stormed away again, Azara tucked herself into her sleeping bag and quickly drifted off to sleep.

However, she was soon woken up by Toph's yelling. "There's something coming towards us!" Toph shouted, causing Azara to bolt upright despite her sleepiness.

"What is it?" Aang asked as Azara got to her feet, sliding out of her sleeping bag.

"It feels like an avalanche, but also not an avalanche," Toph explained, placing a hand on the ground as she tried to deduce what was causing the vibrations.

"Your powers of perception are frightening," Sokka sighed sarcastically, sitting up from his sleeping bag and rubbing his eyes.

"Should we leave?" Katara questioned, sharing worried glances with Azara and Aang.

"I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather not risk it," Azara stated firmly, causing Aang and Katara to nod. They hastily packed up camp and took off on Appa quickly. Glancing behind them, Azara spotted a cloud of smoke making its way across the terrain.

"What is that thing?" Katara inquired as Azara stared back at the contraption following them.

"I don't know, but . . . I have my suspicions," Azara replied, her gaze remaining trained on the black cloud following them.

They were clearly being pursued by the Fire Nation, as the smoke was clearly an indicator of coal, but there were three possibilities she could think of. One, some assassin or agent that her father had sent after her and Aang. But it was unlikely that a mere assassin would have such technology at their disposal. Two, Zuko. But Azula had told her that she was chasing after him as well, meaning that he was wanted as a traitor and would therefore not have access to such technology either. That left option three, Azula.

Azara felt a shiver run down her back before she turned forwards again. If Azula was tracking them, which seemed to be the most likely case scenario, then they needed to be cautious. Any slip up could result in a catastrophe, and she wouldn't allow herself or Aang to be dragged back to the Fire Nation. At least if it were Azula this time, she wouldn't be thrown off at the mere sight of her sister.

They flew a bit farther along, putting the black cloud far behind them before Appa landed on a patch of flat terrain. "Ah, land sweet land!" Toph sighed in content, and she rolled down from Appa's saddle onto the ground. "See you guys in the morning!"

"Actually, can you help us unload?" Katara asked, glaring down at Toph.

"Really? You need me to help unload Sokka's funky-smelling sleeping bag?" Toph huffed as Sokka picked up his sleeping bag and smelled it. He gagged at the smell before passing out.

"I told you it smelled," Azara sighed, staring down at Sokka as he regained his senses.

"Well, yeah. That and everything else. You're a part of our team now, and—" Katara began as Toph stood up from the ground.

"—Look! I didn't ask you to help unload my stuff! I'm carrying my own weight," Toph insisted as Azara sighed and rubbed her face tiredly.

"That's not the point. Ever since you've joined us, you've been nothing but selfish and unhelpful!" Katara growled, marching over to Toph with her fists clenched.

"What!? Look here, Sugar Queen, I gave up everything I had so that I could teach Aang earthbending, so don't talk to me about being selfish!"

"Alright, alright, let's just take a breath," Azara called over to them, but she was ignored by both parties as Toph sat on the ground and bent another earth tent around herself.

"Sugar Queen?" Katara snapped indignantly, causing Toph to put up a wall in between them. "Did you just slam the door in my face? How can you be so infuriating?" Katara yelled as she banged on the earth wall with her fists erratically.

"Should we do something?" Aang asked, glancing over at Azara and Sokka for some ideas.

"Hey, I'm just enjoying the show," Sokka shrugged causing Azara to sigh.

"Maybe some Avatar dispute resolution techniques could help?" Azara suggested, hoping that Aang, ever the peacekeeper, would be able to calm down the situation. Aang nodded and walked over to Katara and Toph. Watching Aang walk over, Azara suddenly felt nervous. "Why do I feel like I just sent a baby lamb out to the slaughter?" Azara winced as Aang called out to Katara.

"Eh, he'll be fine," Sokka yawned, before leaning down to set up the sleeping bags.

"Okay, okay, you both need to calm down," Aang spoke calmly, his hands raised is a calming motion.

"Both? I'm completely calm!" Katara screamed, turning around as Aang jumped back in fear.

"I can see that," Aang replied before shuffling away awkwardly. He hurried back over to Azara and Sokka, who was already back in his sleeping bag. "Well, that didn't work." Aang looked discouraged as Azara glanced over at Katara and Toph's earth tent.

"I think everyone just needs to get some sleep," Azara smiled encouragingly, though she didn't know how their travels were going to go if Katara and Toph didn't get along. Deciding to deal with it in the morning, Azara got back into her sleeping bag and tried to go back to sleep. Katara eventually rejoined them and crawled into her sleeping bag.

"The stars are beautiful tonight. Too bad you can't see them, Toph," Katara taunted loudly, causing Azara to groan and roll over.

"Katara," she warned in a motherly tone as a rock fissure from Toph's tent sent Katara flying on top of Sokka.

"Hey! How's a guy supposed to sleep with all this yelling and earthquaking?" Sokka complained as Toph suddenly emerged from her earth tent.

"That thing is back!" she yelled, causing Azara to jump up.

"Well, how far away is it? Maybe we can close our eyes just for a few minutes," Sokka replied, but Azara shook her head and pulled him up.

"Come on, we've got to move," Azara ordered, spotting the cloud of smoke in the distance. Hurrying to pack up their supplies, the group got onto Appa and took off once more. Looking back at the cloud suspiciously, Azara narrowed her eyes.

"Seriously, what is that thing?" Katara asked, sitting next to Azara as they stared out at the cloud.

"And how does it keeping finding us?"

"I don't know. But this time, I'm going to make sure we lose it," Aang promised as he led Appa through more mountainous terrain. Azara kept her eyes trained behind them, looking for any sign of the black cloud in the distance. She could feel them start to descend before Appa suddenly dropped to the ground, tossing everyone off his back and onto the dirt below.

"Okay, forget about setting up camp. I'm finding the softest pile of dirt and going to sleep," Sokka sighed, crawling around in his sleeping bag.

"That's good because Toph wasn't going to help anyways!" Katara huffed, glaring over at Toph.

"Oh, I didn't realize the baby still needed someone to tuck her into bed," Toph retorted, causing Azara to groan.

"Come on guys, there's something after us and we don't even know what or who it is," Aang sighed, pulling his shirt over his head.

"It could be Zuko. We haven't seen him since the North Pole," Katara suggested, but Azara shook her head.

"No, I don't think it's Zuko," she mumbled, staring out at the sky for any sign of the cloud of smoke.

"Who's Zuko?" Toph asked curiously, rolling over.

"Oh, just some angry freak with a ponytail who's tracked us all over the world," Sokka explained, causing Katara to roll her eyes.

"What's wrong with ponytails, Ponytail?"

"This is a warrior's wolf tail," Sokka retorted indignantly, pointing at his hair, before sitting up. Noticing Azara's downward expression at the mention of her brother, Sokka fumbled around for something to salvage the situation. "Though, I'm sure Zuko's a swell guy when he's not, uh, you know . . ."

"It's okay, you don't have to defend him. I'm well aware of how crazy my family is," Azara sighed, her gaze unmoving from its current position.

"Wait, so Zuko's part of your family?" Toph questioned, causing Azara to nod.

"My older brother. I left him behind along with my uncle when I chose to help Aang. We . . ." Azara trailed off, sighing as she rubbed her face tiredly. ". . . we haven't had the most stable relationship lately."

"Anyway, whoever's chasing us couldn't have followed us here, so, now would everyone just shh?" Sokka pleaded before laying down and trying to fall asleep. Momo jumped onto his chest and started chattering, but Sokka shook his head again. "No, Momo, shh. Sleepy time." Momo, however, kept chattering and staring behind them. "Oh, don't tell me."

"That's impossible. There's no way they could have tracked us," Aang stated, standing up and staring in disbelief at the cloud in the distance.

"I can feel it with my own two feet," Toph retorted, standing up as well.

"Let's get out of here," Katara suggested nervously, but Aang shook his head.

"Maybe we should face them. Find out who they are. Who knows, maybe they're friendly," Aang suggested as Azara got to her feet, a hard expression on her face.

"Always the optimist," Sokka huffed, before grabbing his club and getting out of his sleeping bag. The five of them walked to the edge of the cliff, staring down as the tank train slowed to a halt in front of them. The train didn't move for a moment, before a compartment burst open and three mongoose lizards appeared from behind the steam. Azara narrowed her eyes as three familiar faces appeared.

"It's those three girls from Omashu!" Katara shouted as the mongoose lizards charged up the hill. The group hurried into fighting stances as Azara locked eyes with Azula.

"We can take them. Four on three," Toph stated, causing Sokka to look over at her in confusion.

"Actually Toph, there's five of us," he pointed up, club raised in preparation.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't count you. You know, no bending and all."

"I can still fight!"

"Okay, three on four plus Sokka," Toph corrected herself, causing Sokka's face to turn red in rage.

"We should go," Azara warned, but Toph already engaged the mongoose lizards by creating pillars of earth in front of them. However, the mongoose lizards were far too nimble for the attacks and easily slithered around them.

"We need to go now!" Azara ordered, turning to Aang, who nodded and led the way back to Appa. As the rest of the group ran back to Appa, Toph erected an earth wall in the path of the mongoose lizards. Azula, however, easily blew a hole in the wall with a bolt of lightning. Mai was the first through the hole and released several knives out of her sleeve.

Toph raised her arms and lifted herself into the air and onto Appa's saddle, the emerging earth column blocking Mai's knives. Azara grabbed Toph and pulled her into Appa's saddle before she stared down at her sister and friends.

"Appa, yip yip!"

Azula winded up and released a large fire blast at Appa, but Azara leapt to her feet. Swinging her arms, Azara released a fire slice that deflected the fire blast away from Appa. Azara kneeled back down and locked eyes with Azula once again until they disappeared behind a mountain.

"I can't believe those girls followed us all the way from Omashu," Katara commented as Azara sighed, thinking over the possibilities of the situation.

"I'm not. They're not exactly the type to give up," Azara replied, glancing behind her again, feeling completely unnerved by the whole situation.

"You know them?" Toph asked, causing Azara to sigh.

"Yeah, the blue fire pyromaniac is my twin sister and the other two were my best friends from back home in the Fire Nation," Azara explained, crossing her arms over her chest as she leaned back into Appa's saddle.

"Wow. You weren't kidding when you said your family was crazy," Toph stated, causing Azara to stare behind them once again.

"That's not even the half of it," Azara dismissed before sighing at the thought of her family.
