Chapter 23 [~|~] Rescue

A.N. Warning: Includes mentions of previous abuse.

At the cliff overlooking the valley, Aang fell out of the tree, groaning as Jet landed behind him. Before Jet could reach him, he was knocked back by a water blast. He yelled out as he was backed up against a tree, Katara sending continuous water blasts at him until he was pressed against the tree. Katara raised her arms once more, freezing Jet against the tree.

"Why, Jet? I can't believe I trusted you! You lied to me! You're sick and I trusted you!" Katara shouted, her fists clenched. Jet turned away, making a bird call. Katara's eyes widened at the action. "What are you doing?"

"You're too late," Jet smirked as Katara stared at the dam, looking horrified.

Azara huffed as the chains continued to refuse to budge. The sound of a familiar growl caused her to look up, her eyes widening in relief as she spotted Appa. "Appa! Sokka!" she smiled as Sokka slid off Appa's head and ran towards her.

"Azara! Are you okay?" Sokka shouted, running behind her to undo the chains.

"I'm fine, let's just get out of here before Jet blows us up," Azara replied, standing up and rubbing her sore wrists. Sokka nodded as they ran towards Appa. As Azara climbed up, she bit back a groan of pain as her shoulder rolled painfully, the cut from Jet's hook sword making it harder to climb up. Sokka pulled her the rest of the way in, calling for Appa to take off.

"What happened to your shoulder?" Sokka asked, concerned as Azara inspected the cut. As she turned her head to the side, Sokka spotted the angry red mark on her cheek. "What happened there?" His thumb brushed gently over the red skin.

"Jet happened," Azara stated simply, looking away. Sokka gently pulled her back to look at him, concern clear in his eyes.

"You can tell me what happened," he spoke softly, a comforting look on his face. Azara stared at him, before sighing and retelling the events of the past few hours.

"When Jet pulled me aside, he and his Freedom Fighters tried to surround me. I wouldn't fight back with firebending because that's exactly what he would have wanted. He landed a blow on my shoulder with his hook swords and then knocked me out with some dart," Azara recounted, Sokka's eyes furrowing as he stared at the cut in her shoulder.

"We'll have to look at that. I don't want it to get infected," Sokka nodded, briefly inspecting the wound before looking back at Azara. "But then what happened to your cheek?"

"Jet took me to the reservoir and . . . to wake me up . . . he slapped me," Azara trailed off, her voice becoming quieter as she spoke. Sokka reeled back at the new information.

"He did what?" Sokka snapped, but Azara shook her head.

"Don't worry about it—"

"—How can I not worry about it!? He can't do that to you!" Sokka replied firmly, rage flashing across his eyes as Azara stared at her lap.

"He's not the first," she muttered to herself quietly, but Sokka heard it.

His eyes widened at her statement. Despite her usual confident demeanor in both wit and physical abilities, Sokka had seen other sides to Azara over the last few weeks. He couldn't imagine the horrors that her nightmares contained but from the limited explanations Azara had given him, Aang, and Katara, he had to assume they were related to her past.

Admittedly, when they first met, Sokka had assumed that Azara's previous life was full of ease and luxury. She was a princess of the Fire Nation after all. He just guessed that she chose to not talk about the past because she was embarrassed about being Fire Nation. But then he had heard her muttering in her sleep.

It was only about a month into their journey. Sokka rolled over in his sleeping bag, sleep starting to overtake him when he could make out someone whimpering. Sitting up, he glanced over at Katara, who was sleeping peacefully. His eyes traveled over to Aang, who was laying beside Appa with a content smile on his face. Then, his gaze landed on Azara.

She shifted in her sleep, her head moving side to side. "Stop," she whimpered out, causing Sokka to sit up straighter. "Don't . . . don't," she continued, rolling over and curling into a ball. "Please . . . Dad."

Sokka's eyes widened at the mention of the Fire Lord. Whenever Azara was around, discussions of the Fire Lord were limited. She never mentioned her father outside of his role as Fire Lord and no one dared to press her on it. It wasn't odd for her to excuse herself from conversations involving him either.

"Please . . . I'm sorry," Azara spoke in a slightly louder voice before she shot up. Sokka lowered himself back into his sleeping bag, his eyes still trained on Azara. She held the left side of her face, her fingers trailing up and down her still soft skin. Sighing to herself, Azara wiped the sweat off her forehead before laying back down, unaware of Sokka's gaze on her.

Sokka's expression softened as he stared at her. "Jet's never going to touch you again. I promise," Sokka stated, wrapping an arm around her. Azara leaned into him, slightly burying her head into his chest. The sound of something flying through the air made them look up. An arrow with a flaming tip dipped towards the dam, lighting the blasting jelly, and causing the dam to explode.

Back at the cliff, Katara stared in horror as water filled the valley. "All those people . . . Azara . . ." Katara trailed off, tears coming to her eyes as she thought about her friend. During their last conversation Katara had yelled horrible at Azara, and now she never had the opportunity to fix it. "Jet, you monster!" Katara shouted, rounding on him.

"This was a victory, Katara. Remember that. The Fire Nation and its princess are gone, and the valley will be safe!" Jet retorted as Appa walked forwards.

"It will be safe, without you!" Sokka shouted back from Appa's head. Azara glared at Jet from her position next to Sokka.

"Sokka! Azara, you're alive!" Katara yelled, running over, Aang right behind her.

"I warned the villagers of your plan, just in time."

"What?" Jet gasped, pulling against the ice.

"At first they didn't believe me. The Fire Nation soldiers assumed I was a spy. But one man vouched for me, the old man you attacked. He urged them to trust me, and we got everyone out in time," Sokka explained as Aang jumped up into Appa's saddle. "Including Azara." Sokka turned to glance at her in concern as she continued to glare at Jet.

"Sokka, you fool, we could've freed this valley!"

"Who would be free? Everyone would be dead," Sokka snapped, his eyes narrowed.

"You traitor!" Jet growled, trying to wiggle free from the ice.

"No, Jet. You became the traitor when you stopped protecting innocent people," Sokka stated firmly, glancing at Azara out of the corner of his eye.

"She's far from innocent," Jet taunted, causing Azara to scoff at him.

"Only one of us attempted to commit mass murder today, Jet. I'd help you with that ice, but you don't accept help from Fire Nation scum, right?" Azara shot back as Katara walked over.

"Katara. Please, help me!" Jet pleaded, but Katara shook her head.

"Goodbye, Jet." Katara climbed up into Appa as Sokka flicked the reins. Appa took off and away from the cliff, leaving Jet frozen to the tree.

Azara jumped as Katara placed a hand on her uninjured shoulder. Turning around, Azara looked up at Katara, who still had unshed tears in her eyes. "I'm so sorry, Azara," she nearly sobbed as Azara climbed back into Appa's saddle. "I was just stupid, and I put Jet before you and Sokka and you almost died because of me," Katara rambled as Azara grabbed her hand.

"It's okay, Katara. I'm fine," Azara replied, squeezing her hand.

"No, it's not okay. You're my friend and I put my affection for some guy ahead of that. I'm so sorry," Katara continued as Azara pulled her into a hug.

"Don't worry about it. He's behind us . . . it's behind us. I'm just glad we, well Sokka, got everyone to safety," Azara shrugged, as Katara noticed the cut on her shoulder.

"What happened to your shoulder?" Katara asked, pointing at the cut.

"Uh . . . Jet's hook swords," Azara spoke, causing Katara to go into her motherly mode. As Katara carefully cleaned and bandaged Azara's shoulder, the Fire Nation princess turned to look out the front of the saddle, her gaze resting on Sokka's figure. "Hey, Sokka," she called out, causing the Water Tribe boy to turn around.

"Yeah?" he questioned softly, his blue eyes reflecting off the sun. Azara opened her mouth, about to say something, but changing her mind.

"What about our bet?" she finally joked as Katara finished bandaging her shoulder. "You owe me ten copper pieces."

"No, I don't!" Sokka retorted, whirling around to glare at Azara playfully.

"Yes, you do! We walked into a Fire Nation Army camp on your little walking excursion," Azara teased as Katara crawled over to Aang. Azara leaned on the front of Appa's saddle, staring down at Sokka with a small teasing smile on her face.

"I just saved your life!" Sokka pointed out as Azara shrugged jokingly.

"We'll call it even then," she decided as Sokka sighed dramatically and Aang and Katara laughed at the scene.

Aang called Azara over to talk about something to do with the clouds. Sokka turned around, about to say something when he saw Azara over with Aang and Katara, laughing at the funny shaped clouds. Smiling softly, Sokka turned back around and continued to steer Appa north.
