Chapter 20 [~|~] Suspicion
Azara sighed, following after the Freedom Fighters alongside Sokka as they traveled deeper into the woods. Jet suddenly stopped in a clearing of trees, raising his hand.
"We're here!" Jet announced as Azara looked around, confused. There was nothing but trees to see from their current position.
"Where? There's nothing here!" Sokka sneered, crossing his arms over his chest. Jet handed him a piece of rope, giving it a light tug. Azara watched, laughing, as Sokka was pulled up into the trees. Aang, declining the rope from Jet, airbended upwards into the trees.
"Need help, Jin?" Jet asked, but Azara shook her head.
"I think I can handle this," she replied, grabbing the rope, and giving it a light tug before being pulled up into the treetops. Letting go of the rope, Azara landed on a platform gracefully and walked over to Sokka, who was sitting glumly on the ground. Staring out at the camp, Azara gasped at the maze of huts in front of her, more teenagers running about in the canopy of the forest.
"It's beautiful up here!" Katara praised as she and Jet landed behind them. Azara turned around and raised an eyebrow at how close Katara and Jet were.
"It's beautiful . . . and more importantly the Fire Nation can't find us," Jet stated as Smellerbee landed next to him.
"They would love to find you. Wouldn't they, Jet?" Smellerbee teased, standing up and smirking.
"It's not going to happen, Smellerbee," Jet brushed off, leading the group through the camp.
"Why does the Fire Nation want to find you?" Katara questioned, looking up at Jet.
"I guess you could say I've been causing them a little trouble. See, they took over a nearby Earth Kingdom town a few years back."
"We've been ambushing their troops, cutting off their supply lines, and doing anything we can do to mess with them," Pipsqueak added as Azara looked away. She was glad that she had given a fake name because she was certain that Jet probably would have charged her the second that he found out she was Fire Nation. She would have to keep a low profile here.
"One day, we'll drive the Fire Nation out of here for good and free that town," Jet spoke confidently as Katara gushed.
"That's so brave," she smiled dreamily as Sokka rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, nothing's braver than a guy in a treehouse," Sokka spat sarcastically as Katara glared back at him.
"Don't pay any attention to my brother."
"No problem. He probably had a rough day," Jet shrugged as Azara glanced up at Sokka, who was glaring between his sister and Jet.
"So, you all live here?"
"That's right. Longshot over there? His town got burned down by the Fire Nation. And we found the Duke trying to steal our food. I don't think he ever really had a home," Jet explained, turning to the members of his Freedom Fighters.
"What about you?" Katara asked softly, causing Jet to stop in the middle of the platform. Azara followed after the rest of the group, glancing behind in concern as Katara stopped with him, before turning around and falling in step with Sokka. They were led into a large communal dining area, which was already filled with chattering kids.
Azara sat quietly in between Sokka and Katara as Jet stood up on the table, holding a drink in his hand as he turned to address his Freedom Fighters. "Today, we struck another blow against the Fire Nation swine. I got a special joy from the look on one soldier's face, when the Duke dropped down on his helmet and rode him like a wild hog monkey." At Jet's statement, the Duke stood up and walked around the table, raising his arms as the Freedom Fighters cheered for him.
"Now, the Fire Nation thinks they don't have to worry about a couple of kids hiding in the trees. Maybe they're right," Jet trailed off, moving to take a sip of his drink as the crowd booed. "Or maybe . . . they're dead wrong," Jet stated, causing loud cheers to erupt around the table.
"Isn't he wonderful?" Katara sighed, causing Azara to hide a chuckle from her friend.
"Don't let Sokka hear you, he's already ready to blow," Azara joked as Jet walked over, moving to sit in between Azara and Katara. Azara glanced knowingly at Katara as the Water Tribe girl beamed at Jet's appearance. Sure, Jet wasn't ugly, and Azara couldn't blame Katara for developing a crush on him. But she still didn't trust him.
"Hey Jet, nice speech," Katara complimented as he turned to her.
"Thanks. By the way, I was really impressed with you and Aang. That was some great bending I saw out there today," Jet smiled as Azara glanced at him out of the corner of her eye.
"Well, he's great. He's the Avatar. I could use some more training," Katara replied, a blush dotting her cheeks.
"Avatar, huh? Very nice," Jet nodded as Aang thanked him. He then turned to stare at Azara, who was looking down at her lap. "You have some moves as well, Jin. Where'd you learn to fight like that?"
"Just something I picked up over the years," Azara shrugged, staring at the table.
"So, I might know a way you and Aang can help in our struggle—" Jet started to speak, turning to Katara and Aang, before Sokka cut him off.
"—Unfortunately, we have to leave tonight," Sokka spoke, rising to his feet and storming off. Azara was tempted to follow him, glad that someone else didn't want to stay around here for long, when Jet called out to Sokka.
"Sokka, you're kidding me! I needed you on an important mission tomorrow."
"What mission?" Sokka asked, his interest piqued for now. After Jet explained the plans for the next day, Sokka begrudgingly agreed for the group to spend the night at camp.
"We could use your help as well, Jin," Jet offered, but Azara shook her head.
"No, it's alright. I'll stay and watch Appa and Momo. We don't want them to eat all your supplies," she joked, although there was an ulterior motive to her refusal. She did not trust Jet and the way that he was staring at her made her skin crawl. For everyone's betterment, she decided she would stay as far away from Jet as possible as long as they stayed at his camp.
The next morning came quietly and by the time Azara had awoken, Aang and Katara had already left for the day, leaving Sokka and Azara alone in the hut. Azara yawned, standing up and stretching as Sokka rolled up his sleeping bag. "How did you sleep?" Sokka asked as Azara ran a hand through her tangled hair.
"Well, no nightmares, so I guess that's an improvement," she replied, rubbing the sleep out her eyes. Bending down to pack up her sleeping bag, Azara nearly jumped when the flap to the hut flung open, revealing a smirking Jet.
"Ready to go, Sokka?" Jet questioned, crossing his arms over his chest, his gaze floating between Sokka and Azara. Sokka nodded, grabbing his boomerang, and standing up. Azara felt goosebumps rising on her arms as Jet turned to look at her. "You sure you don't want to come, Jin?"
"Yeah, I'm sure. Thanks for the offer though," Azara replied, holding her sleeping bag to her chest.
"We could really use your help. Aang and Katara said that you had a lot of experience with the Fire Nation," Jet drawled, leaning on the doorframe of the hut as Azara's blood ran cold. She did not know Jet, but she had a feeling he was waiting for her to flinch, react at the statement. But she had been trained from a young age to keep her composure in even the tensest of situations. And she knew that Aang and Katara would never tell anyone about her true identity without her consent.
Narrowing her eyes and tightening her hold on her sleeping bag, Azara gazed at Jet with a calm expression, her eyes sharp. "Thank you for the offer, but I'm sure that someone of your caliber would not need my assistance," Azara replied coolly as Sokka stepped in front of her.
"We should get going, don't you think?" he added as Jet pushed himself off the doorframe, a sly smile on his face.
"Of course, let's go," Jet nodded, leading the way out of the hut. "See you around, Jin." And without another word he was gone. Azara huffed in annoyance as the tarp over the entrance swung with the breeze.
"Be careful out there, I don't trust him," Azara sighed, turning to Sokka with a concerned look on her face. He nodded, a similar expression on his face, before walking out of the hut. Azara watched him leave before moving to sit. Taking a breath, Azara crossed her legs and started to meditate. She had not been able to meditate for a few days and knew that meditating would be the best way to calm herself down.
About an hour passed before Katara and Aang returned, talking about the adventures they had had with other Freedom Fighters that morning. "What did you do this morning?" Katara asked, settling next to Azara on the floor.
"Just meditating," Azara shrugged, deciding to leave out the encounter with Jet. She trusted Aang and Katara and knew that they would never announce her identity to Jet of all people. Aang walked off to go play with Momo, leaving Azara and Katara to themselves in the hut.
Azara laid down on her back as Katara started to put together a hat made of leaves and sticks for Jet. "So, what do you think about Jet?" Katara asked, looking away from her arts and crafts project. Azara sat up, looking at Katara with a confused expression.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean . . . isn't he so wonderful?" Katara giggled, a blush dusting her cheeks at the very thought of him. Azara withheld the disgusted expression she wanted to make, settling for shrugging her shoulders in response.
"Yeah, I guess."
"Are you okay? Did something happen?" Katara asked, as she looked over at Azara. The firebender contemplated her options, before glancing over at Katara.
"I don't trust him," Azara said simply, causing Katara's eyes to widen in surprise before narrowing accusingly.
"How can you say that? He's been nothing but nice since we got here," Katara nearly snapped as Azara sighed, rubbing her face tiredly.
"I understand that. But . . . there's just something off about him," Azara contemplated as Katara shook her head.
"Now you sound like Sokka."
"Well he's right, this time anyways. There's just something about the way he looks at me . . . the way he talks. I don't like it," Azara stated firmly as Katara huffed, returning to her hat. "I don't mean to insult your boyfriend or whatever he is, but I don't think he's telling us everything."
"We just met. He hasn't had time—"
"—Exactly! We don't know him! He could just be using you and Aang to get whatever he wants," Azara pointed out as Katara glared over at her.
"You know what I think? I think you're just jealous," Katara nearly growled as Azara sighed and leaned her head back, stopping herself from rolling her eyes.
"And what I am supposed to be jealous of?"
"I don't know! Maybe Jet's a better leader than you, or, or, you wish he liked you like he likes me!" Katara replied, causing Azara to raise an eyebrow.
"First of all, I don't care about who's a better leader. That's what got us all into this mess, remember?" Azara spoke, referencing their earlier argument with Sokka. "Second of all, I don't like Jet like that; he's all yours. Hell, you can have every guy that comes swinging down from the trees to rescue us from the big bad Fire Nation. They're not my type."
Katara opened her mouth to reply when Aang walked in, a wide smile on his face. "Hey guys, Sokka's back from his mission!" he announced as Azara and Katara glanced at each other before standing up and walking out of the hut.
