Chapter 108 [~|~] The Ember Island Players (Books 2 and 3)
They eventually returned to their booth in time for the second act to start. Azara leaned onto Sokka, who rested his head atop her own.
The curtains opened to reveal an Earth Kingdom town. Azara, Katara, and Sokka stood next to a large rock as Aang looked around. "Well, here we are in the Earth Kingdom!" Katara announced, holding her arms up in the air.
"I'd better have a look around to see if I can find an earthbending teacher!" Aang stated, opening an air glider prop, and jumping into the air. A cable carried Aang through the air and around the theater, flying over the audience.
"This is it! This must be where I come in!" Toph exclaimed, looking excited.
Aang landed back on stage and walked over to the others. "I flew all over town, but I couldn't find a single earthbending master!"
"Here it comes!"
The large rock that the group was standing next to suddenly rose up as a large and buff man dressed in Toph's outfit emerged from a trapdoor. "You can't find an earthbending master in the sky, you have to look underground!" Toph yelled gruffly, tossing the rock to the side.
Everyone suddenly burst out laughing at the appearance of Toph's actor. Zuko looked rather stunned, dropping the scroll that he had been reading. Toph still looked excited about her entrance in the play.
"Who are you?" Aang asked, walking over to Toph.
Toph hocked some spit before turning to Aang. "My name's Toph, because it sounds like tough." Toph flexed their muscles aggressively at the crowd before turning back to Aang. "And that's just what I am!" Toph shouted, thumb against their chest.
The audience laughed at the scene as Toph stood up straighter. "Wait a minute, I sound like a guy. A really buff guy."
"Well, Toph, what you hear up there is the truth. It hurts, doesn't it?" Katara teased, leaning over towards Toph, and looking smug.
"Are you kidding me? I wouldn't have cast it any other way!" Toph laughed, moving to grip the railing. "At least I'm not a flying bald lady!" Aang crossed his arms over his chest, glaring at the stage with annoyance at Toph's words.
"So, you're blind?" Aang asked, waving a hand in front of Toph's eyes.
Toph laughed before pointing at Aang. "I can see you doing that. I see everything you see, except I don't 'see' like you do. I release a sonic wave from my mouth." Toph smirked before turning towards the audience and screaming.
Azara clasped her hands over her ears, curling up into herself as the actor's scream reverberated around the room. Sokka tugged her closer, burying his face into her hair to try and mute some of the noise. The only person in the whole theater who wasn't grimacing or covering their ears, was Toph, who stood up, looking excited.
"There. I got a pretty good look at you."
The audience clapped as the group walked off stage.
The scene changed to reveal Zuko and Iroh standing on a platform. "Zuko, it's time we had a talk . . . about your hair! It's gone too far!" Iroh warned, pointing at Zuko, whose ponytail had been traded for a large, full wig.
"Maybe it's best if we . . . split up!" Zuko stated dramatically before he walked off stage. Iroh headed in the opposite direction, his hands folded over his large belly.
The scene changed again to the abandoned town where Iroh had gotten shot in the chest by Azula. "Azula, my sister, what are you doing here?" Zuko demanded as he stood with Team Avatar and Iroh, cornering Azula against a wall.
"You caught me," Azula drawled, raising her hands into the air. "Wait, what's that?" She pointed in the distance, causing the group to turn around. "I think it's your honor!"
"Where?"
While everyone was distracted, Azula slipped through a side door, and escaped. The group turned back to the wall, acting surprised to see that Azula was gone.
"She escaped, but how?" Katara asked, turning to the audience.
The scene changed again to depict the Outer Wall of Ba Sing Se. Azula stood on top of a drill prop while Aang stood up on top of the Outer Wall. "If she continues drilling, this wall will come down for sure!" Aang gasped, turning to the audience. Aang picked up a prop rock and threw it at Azula, who blocked it easily.
"Haha, yes! Continue drilling! The city of Ba Sing Se can hide no longer!" Aang threw more rocks at Azula, who dodged or blocked them.
The scene changed once more to the prison under Lake Laogai. Jet jumped up on stage wearing googly eyeglasses and hooks for hands. Team Avatar gathered behind Jet, looking concerned at the state of him.
"No, Jet! What did they do to you?" Aang gasped as Jet swung around the stage with his hook hands.
"Must . . . serve . . . Earth King!" Jet swung his hooks around again, causing Aang and Sokka to jump to dodge them. "Must . . . destroy!" As Jet continued to flail around stage and yell out, a hollow rock prop floated down from the ceiling. Jet stumbled around before falling forward so that the prop covered him. However, it only covered part of him, forcing the actor to crawl under it completely.
"Did Jet just . . . die?" Zuko asked, looking confused.
"You know, it was really unclear," Sokka replied, leaning forward.
The scene changed to the Crystal Catacombs. Azara and Zuko sat next to each other on a rock with their backs to each other. "My boyfriend will come and rescue me, you know," Azara huffed, sticking her chin up in the air as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"Who? That Water Tribe peasant?" Zuko demanded, standing up, and glaring at Azara.
Sokka seemed to smile at the actor's words, before deflating instantly as Azara's actress laughed loudly at Actor Zuko's accusation.
"No, silly! The Avatar!" Azara corrected, standing up as well.
"Why is my girlfriend with everyone but me!?" Sokka screeched, jumping to his feet as Azara covered her face in embarrassment.
"Ha ha, you lost to Twinkle Toes!" Toph cackled, holding her side as she laughed loudly. "Oh, this play just keeps getting better and better!"
Sokka turned to Aang, who looked rather embarrassed about the play himself. "How could you, Aang!? I thought you were my best friend! I mean the other stuff from the first act hurt, but now I just feel so betrayed!"
"Sokka, I would never . . . wait I'm your best friend?" Aang asked, smiling slightly, before becoming serious once more.
"Sokka, there's nothing going on between me and Aang," Azara stated softly as Aang nodded quickly to confirm her words. "Never has been and never will be."
"Definitely! I'd never want to kiss her in a million years!" Aang promised Sokka, who turned back to the Avatar.
"Oh, so now my girlfriend's not good enough for you, then?"
"Sokka, that's not what he meant," Azara huffed, tugging her boyfriend back down into his seat. "I don't even know where the playwright got that impression. No one's thought that Aang and I had anything going on except for . . ." Azara trailed off, remembering the Cave of Two Lovers and the flyer for the play, before leaping to her feet. "If I ever see that Chong again, I'm frying his ass!!" she vowed, raising a fist, and waving it around.
"Who's Chong?"
"The nomad guy from the tunnel," Azara explained, crossing her arms over her chest. "He thought that I had a thing for Aang."
"The guy who interrupted us?" Sokka asked, causing Azara to nod in confirmation. "I hate that guy," Sokka muttered, leaning back in his seat.
"I knew I should have fried his ass when I had the chance. This is what I get for being a nice person."
"So, the Water Tribe girl and the Avatar aren't together?" Zuko asked, walking over to his sister.
"Of course not! She just sees him as a little brother. But I know she thinks you're attractive," Azara teased, causing Zuko to nod.
"You think she'd go out with me?"
"Well, she only dates older bad boys . . ." Azara trailed off, pretending to contemplate it before turning back to Zuko, "so, yeah, I think you fit the part."
The actress's words seemed to strike a nerve with Aang, who got to his feet and moved to leave the box. Sokka, forgetting his recent argument with the airbender, watched him go, and leaned over Azara to talk to Aang.
"Oh, you're getting up? Can you get me some fire flakes?" Sokka wrapped an arm around Azara, before realizing something. "Ooh, and fire gummies!"
Azara shot her boyfriend an annoyed look as he slumped back into his seat. "You better share," she huffed, leaning back into his side.
The scene changed to a large platform. Zuko stood in the middle as Azula, with a Fire Nation flag behind her, walked out. Iroh emerged from the other side, an Earth Kingdom flag flying behind him. Zuko looked between the two, clearly conflicted.
"Well, my brother, what's it going to be? Your nation, or a life of treachery?" Azula asked, placing her hands on her hips.
"Choose treachery, it's more fun!" Iroh winked, sipping some tea, and holding a thumb up.
Zuko started walking towards Iroh, causing Azula to gasp in shock. "No way!"
However, once Zuko reached Uncle, he pushed him over before turning around and walking towards Azula. "I hate you, Uncle! You smell, and I hate you for all time!" The Earth Kingdom banner fell over Iroh as Zuko and Azula walked off the stage together. "Now, let's go get our sister."
"You didn't really say that did you?" Katara asked Zuko, who looked away.
"I might as well have."
The scene changed to Mai and Ty Lee taking out the guards in the throne room of the Earth Kingdom palace. Aang jumped over the throne and landed in front of Mai and Ty Lee, who had been posing for the crowd after defeating the guards.
"Avatar State, yip yip!" Aang yelled as the lights dimmed. Aang's tattoos and eyelids glowed bright blue. A rope was attached to Aang's back before they were lifted into the air. However, as Aang rose higher, Azula jumped onto the stage from behind a cloud of smoke.
"Not if my lightning can help it!" Azula shouted before throwing a blue streamer at Aang. They peeked open an eye to grab the streamer, before bringing it to their chest and feigning pain, wiggling around as they were lowered to the ground.
"No, Aang!" Azara gasped, running onto stage and feigning shock at the sight of Aang on the floor, unmoving.
"Your boyfriend's dead. Now will you join us?" Azula asked, gesturing to Azara, who sniffled, before perking up.
"Okay!" she exclaimed, before moving to join Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee at the center of the stage.
"The Avatar is no more!" Azula announced, holding her hands up.
The crowd cheered loudly as Team Avatar looked disgusted at the events. Sitting in the hallway, Azara slumped against the wall next to Zuko. "It seems like every time there's a big battle, you guys barely make it out alive. I mean, you guys lose a lot!" Suki spoke, causing Sokka to shoot her a look.
"You're one to talk, Suki. Didn't Azula take you captive? That's right, she did!"
"Are you trying to get on my bad side?" Suki warned as Sokka shrugged.
"I'm just saying."
"Does anyone know where Aang is?" Katara asked, looking concerned.
"He left to get me fire gummies, like, ten minutes ago. And I'm still waiting!" Sokka complained, crossing his arms over his chest. Azara rested her head on her hand, looking bored.
"Haven't seen him."
"I'm going to check outside," Katara sighed, moving to leave.
"Suki, what are the chances you can get me backstage? I got some jokes I want to give to the actor me," Sokka questioned, turning to the Kyoshi Warrior, who suddenly appeared serious.
"I'm an elite warrior who's trained for many years in the art of stealth." She frowned for a moment before smiling widely. "I think I could get you backstage!"
"Can I come? Kind of want to talk to the actor me too," Kesuk replied, pushing off the wall.
"You want to come too?" Sokka turned to Azara, who shook her head.
"I've had quite enough of this play already. I'll just wait here," she sighed, causing Sokka to nod. Sokka, Suki, and Kesuk walked off as Toph took a seat on the other side of Zuko.
"Geez, everyone's getting so upset about their characters. Even you seem more down than usual, and that's saying something!" Toph told Zuko, who sighed.
"You don't get it, it's different for you. You get a muscly version of yourself, taking down ten bad guys at once, and making sassy remarks," Zuko huffed, leaning forward on his knees.
"Yeah, that's pretty great!"
"But for me, it takes all the mistakes I've made in my life and shoves them back in my face. My uncle, he's always been on my side, even when things were bad. He was there for me, he taught me so much, and how do I repay him? With a knife in his back. It's my greatest regret, and I may never get to redeem myself."
"You have redeemed yourself to your uncle. You don't realize it, but you already have," Toph replied confidently, leaning back against the wall.
"How do you know?"
"Because I once had a long conversation with the guy, and all he would talk about was you."
"She's right," Azara confirmed, remembering her and Toph's chat with Uncle.
"Really?"
"Yeah, and it was kind of annoying."
"Oh, sorry," Zuko spoke, lowering his head.
"But it was also very sweet. All your uncle wanted was for you to find your own path and see the light. Now you're here with us. He'd be proud." Zuko smiled at Toph before she punched him roughly in the arm.
"Ow! What was that for!?"
"That's how I show affection."
A young boy in an Aang costume ran by, before stopping when he spotted Zuko. "Your Zuko costume's pretty good, but your scar's on the wrong side." The boy ran off as Azara couldn't help by burst out into surprised laughter, quickly covering her mouth as she spotted the look on Zuko's face.
"The scar's not on the wrong side!" Zuko snapped after the boy before throwing the hood over his head angrily.
The beginning of the third act passed by without much significance. Azara glanced away from the play when she heard footsteps from behind her. Aang walked back in, taking a seat beside her, though he looked rather downcast. Sokka leaned over to inform him about the play.
"Here's what you missed . . . we went to the Fire Nation, and you got better, and Katara was the Painted Lady, and I got a sword, and I think Combustion Man died."
"And I just disappeared off the face of the Earth apparently," Azara muttered, leaning back in her seat.
"Oh, look, the Invasion's about to start! Shh!" Sokka whispered to Aang, before turning back to the stage.
The scene depicted Aang and Katara standing on top of one of the invasion submarines together. "I just wanted to let you know, Aang, that I'll always love you . . . like a brother," Katara stated, holding her hands together.
"I wouldn't want it any other way!" Aang exclaimed, punching the air. The two shook hands before Aang opened the glider and flew off. Katara waved goodbye with a small smile on her face.
Azara glanced over at Aang, who pulled his hat down to cover his face. "You guys didn't just shake hands . . . did you?" she asked Aang quietly, who shook his head.
"Hey Toph," Sokka called, standing on one of the submarines, "would you say you and Aang have a 'rocky relationship'?"
Sokka began to laugh hysterically, causing Azara to raise an eyebrow. Sokka leaned over her, picking up Aang's hat. "I told him to say that!"
"I hope everyone's ready for the Invasion! Slap-a-pow!"
The audience and Sokka laughed again. Azara shook her head, a playful smile on her face as she glanced over at her boyfriend.
The scene changed to show the Fire Nation Royal Palace. Aang dropped from the ceiling as Toph, Katara, and Sokka ran in from the side. "We finally made it to the Royal Palace, but no one's home!" Aang exclaimed, arms out wide.
"Actually, I'm home, and I want to join you!" Zuko offered, walking on stage.
"I guess we have no choice. Come on!" Sokka yelled, leading the group to exit the stage.
Sokka stood up and stretched out his limbs. "I guess that's it. The play's caught up to the present now."
"The play's not over," Azara observed as they continued to move props around.
"But it is over, unless . . . this is the future," Sokka stated dramatically, rubbing his chin.
The scene changed as Ozai walked on stage, standing on his throne. A mock Sozin's Comet flew over his head. "With the energy harnessed from that comet, no one will be able to stop the Fire Nation!" Ozai announced, lifting his hands in the air as Azula ran on stage.
"Father, Zuko and the Avatar are at the Palace. They're trying to stop you!"
"You take care of Zuko. I shall face the Avatar myself!" Ozai ordered, before disappearing behind a cloud of smoke.
Azula got to her feet as Zuko and Aang reentered the stage. "Aang, you find the Fire Lord. I'll hold her off!" Zuko shouted, causing Aang to lift off the stage again on the glider.
"You are no longer my brother. You are an enemy!" Azula accused, pointing a finger at Zuko.
"No! I am the rightful heir to the throne!" Zuko returned, glaring at Azula.
"We'll see!"
Azula pulled out blue streamers and threw them at Zuko, who managed to dodge them. The two threw and swung streamers at each other, jumping around the stage. Then, Azula turned and raised a hand. Five large flame streamers rose from the ground, the largest of which engulfed Zuko.
"Honor!" he yelled as he was lowered from stage through a trapdoor. Azula turned to the audience and bowed once Zuko was gone.
Azara gaped at the stage as the audience cheered. She glanced with concern over at Zuko, who looked like he had stopped breathing for a moment.
The scene changed again, small paper flames fluttering around the stage as Aang walked on. Ozai stood at his throne with Sozin's Comet above his head again. "So, you have mastered all four elements?" Ozai asked, glaring down at Aang.
"Yeah, and now you're going down!" Aang stated, pointing the staff at him.
"No! It is you who are going down! You see, you are too late! The comet is already here, and I'm unstoppable!"
Aang turned to the crowd, looking terrified, before Ozai jumped down. Waving red streamers, he swung them at Aang, who managed to dodge. Aang danced around the stage with the glider, managing to dodge the swings and hits of Ozai's red streamers. Aang jumped over Ozai before landing on the other side of the stage gracefully.
Ozai stepped forward, thrusting his arms towards Aang. A large red banner was pulled out, heading towards Aang and wrapping them in it. "Nooooo!" Aang yelled as the banner was wrapped around them before finally falling to the stage and closing their eyes.
Azula entered the stage again, looking pleased with herself. "It is over, Father. We've done it!"
"Yes! We have done it! The dreams of my father, and my father's father, have now been realized! The world . . . is . . . mine!" he announced, holding his hands in the air.
The audience cheered loudly, giving a standing ovation for the performance as Team Avatar stared in disbelief at the stage. There were no words to even say. Deciding to leave quickly, they walked along the beach as they headed back to their house.
"That . . . wasn't a good play," Zuko sighed, lowering his head.
"I'll say."
"No kidding."
"Horrible."
"You said it."
"It just got worse honestly."
"But the effects were decent," Sokka shrugged as he and Azara pulled up the end of the group.
"Could have been worst," Azara replied as her brother shot her a look.
"How could it have been worse, Azara?"
"Well, at least they said everyone's name correctly. You know, they could have done something stupid like changing people's names."
"Stupid how?"
"I don't know. Something like Aang to Ong or Sokka to Soaka or Eeroh instead of Iroh," Azara suggested off the top of her head.
"Who would be that stupid?"
"Yeah, there's no way anyone would be stupid enough to change the names of the main characters."
"Yeah, you guys are right. That's a new level of dumb," Azara finally relented as they walked along the beach.
A.N. There is no movie in Ba Sing Se.
But, as I said before, I hope you guys laughed and enjoyed these chapters! It's a nice light and funny bit before we head into the darker chapters of the finale.
Just to update you guys on what's to come, we've got the four Sozin's Comet episodes left, which I still have to edit. I decided to keep the demarcations kept by the series and there will be a bit of skipping around, especially once people split up and go on their separate missions. Except for the fourth and final episode, which I have separated into an angsty section and a fluffy section as of right now.
And then we have the epilogue. I think (and by think I mean mostly have written) two parts to it because I felt like after so much angst, a little extra fluff wouldn't hurt anyone. Which is probably frowned upon by professional writers, but oh well.
Crazy how far we've come, but there's still a bit left to go, so stay tuned! Thanks as always for reading, commenting, and voting!
