Chapter 26: Another child
(Normal pov)
As the new year arrived, Astrid's pregnancy progressed, her flat stomach blew up into a big baby bump in a few months. The village congratulated the beautiful shield maiden; giving her gifts for the future child and baked goods for the Haddock house, though she was against it, Astrid respectfully accepted the gifts and thanked her people. She then reflected how the months have been for her.
(Month one of pregnancy)
More like the most miserable. Day in and day out Hiccup hobbled to and from on his prosthetic leg carrying out his wife's never ending orders. He groaned as she ordered him to get more ham and fish.
He sighed as he trudged to the market. He loved Astrid with all his heart but her hormonal imbalance was scary. Even for him.
Yesterday was a perfect example.
Astrid was standing in the living room of the Thorston house. "Uh, so why are you here again?" Tuffnut asked as he handed Astrid and Hiccup glasses of wine for Hiccup, and cider for Astrid.
"Because Ruffnut has something for Astrid."
"And you can't just go to the arena because?"
"Astrid's been banned from there until after she's given birth."
"I'm scared to ask this but why?"
Hiccup sighed before whispering into his friend's ear. "She did that? With a hammer?" He nodded. "Over his head?" Hiccup nodded again. "Then with an axe?" He nodded again.
"Wow that's why I am scared to ask but WOW! GIRL YOU IS GOOD!" Hiccup elbowed Tuffnut while giving him a look. "C'mon Tuff, don't encourage her!" Tuffnut laughed. "Sorry H, but really that's shocking and good at the same time!" Suddenly Astrid put a hand over her growing baby bump. "Tuffnut am I fat?" The male twin scoffed at his friends question. "Why ask me? Hiccup's your husband."
"I always get his opinion what's yours?"
Tuffnut sighed, his sister warned him that if you called a woman thin when she was pregnant she would freak out and worry about the baby. "Yeah!" He said awkwardly. "You're huge! Bigger than Gobbers dragon Grump!"
Hiccup gulped "Tuff..." He coughed.
"What?"
"You're dead..."
There were flames in Astrid's eyes "WHAT?!"
Tuffnut was out cold for days. She swung her axe across his head then with his mace, she nearly chopped off his cock, luckily Tuffnut dodged just in time.
Tuff fell back unconscious after that and Hiccup did his best to restrain her from doing anything to his poor unconscious body.
Hiccup shuddered.
He hoped that would never happen again...
(Month two of pregnancy)
"HICCUP I ASKED FOR PICKLES NOT ORANGES HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET A PICKLE MIXED UP WITH AN ORANGE?!!"
"I'm sorry! They were out of pickles at the market!"
"SO YOU BROUGHT HOME ORANGES?!"
"You love oranges!"
"BUT I ASKED FOR PICKLES!"
Hiccup fell into the splits to dodge a flying axe. Which hit the wall behind him with an echoing thwack.
"Are you fucking crazy woman?!!"
"JUST A LITTLE BIT!"
Valka grabbed Eira and brought her outside, the little girl was asking her grandmother why Astrid was angry, Valka gave her son a look that said, 'good luck.' Hiccup sighed and got back up, and before he could do anything else, there was a knock at the door. "Yeah! Come in!" Hiccup said.
Fishlegs walked into the room with a basket secured firmly on his back. "Sorry it took so long Hiccup. We just got the harvest in." Hiccup smiled before taking the basket from his bulky friend. "Sorry I made you do this Fishlegs. Astrid's been craving these all month." The bulky Viking brushed it off. "Hey, it's alright. Really I don't mind. Besides I would hate for you to come to dragon training with two more missing limbs." Hiccup smiled. "Thanks buddy."
With that Fishleggs left. "Astrid!" He called "Fishlegs came by and got you some pickles!"
There was a thunder of footsteps and suddenly a bright yellow blur tackled him to the ground, Hiccup groaned at the pressure of his wife's hug. "Ohh thank you honey I love you!"
"I know, I know. You're welcome." He smiled sheepishly before kissing her on the lips. "You know what would go well with these pickles?" She asked getting up and taking one from the basket. "Some salt, this fish and some onion!"
Hiccup gagged. "That sounds... great Milady." She smiled. "Want to eat some with me?" She asked holding up a large butcher knife. "What are you going to do with that?" He asked scared out of his wits.
She grabbed a fish from a basket in the corner, placed it on the counter and chopped off its head. "Just that. Why?"
He sighed in relief. "No reason."
She raised an eyebrow. "Oh well. Do you want some?"
He quickly shook his head. "No! No thanks honey. You go ahead!"
She pouted sadly. "You don't want to eat with me?" He shook his head again. "No I do I'm just not in the mood for salted pickles, fish, and onions..." Astrid sighed. "You're right."
Suddenly she perked up. "It needs orange!"
So while she scampered off to find an orange Hiccup slowly walked up the stairs and disappeared.
(Months three through four of pregnancy)
Astrid laid in bed one night, she just couldn't fall asleep. So she lay there wide-awake staring at the ceiling above her.
Lucas? Zorina? Sneeze? Helga? She turned to the side and looked at her husband, a small smirk creeping up on her lips Hiccup Jr.?
She had been at this for an hour. Deciding baby names was something she and Hiccup had thought would be the easiest part of parenting, but now as she lay there in bed every second that dragged by seemed to a drag a new name to her.
Tania? Aldiraz? She looked at her husband again. She smiled Stoick II?
She smiled, the name was nice. She shook her head, she'd talk to Hiccup about it in the morning.
"If you aren't going to sleep anytime soon could you at least stop moving around so much my dear."
She jumped slightly "I didn't know you were up babe."
Hiccup yawned before grinning his famous lopsided grin. The very one that made Astrid fall head over heels for him. "Well you're moving around so much that I couldn't sleep." He smirked at her embarrassed expression, she leaned toward him and kissed his nose. "I'm sorry." Hiccup smiled and caressed her cheek before speaking. "It's okay. What are you thinking about? Maybe I can help you?" Astrid smiled and traced the scar going down his eye.
"What should we name our baby?" She asked her arms finding there way around his waist.
He yawned again "Mary? Alvin? Coral? I'o? Ariel?" Astrid raised her eyebrow. "You've put some thought into this haven't you?"
He smiled. "Maybe..."
She pushed him playfully on the shoulder. "And you didn't tell me? I hate you!" Hiccup pouted playfully "I'm hurt." She smiles playfully and slowly crawled toward him. "Ohh you poor baby." Astrid cooed. "Do I need to kiss it and make it better?"
He smiled as his wife climbed on top of him. "And maybe a few other things too..."
She smirked. "Maybe I will...
(Month five of pregnancy)
Astrid groaned as she threw up her breakfast into a large cauldron in the backyard. It was official, she thought as she walked back into the house.
Being pregnant sucked dragon dung. The first time wasn't as bad, but this time? It was a nightmare. Astrid didn't mean that a bit, she loved the young child growing inside her, but the constant aches and pains in her back, morning sickness was always a pain, the constant cravings for pickles dipped in salt and covered in onions, her stupid hormones were as unstable as a Speedstingers tolerance to not sting anyone or anything in its path.
Not to mention that her baby loved to kick her every second every hour of the damn day!
She groaned as the said child pushed against her skin. "Oh you better come out soon little one..."
"Hey, hey, hey!" Ruffnuts loud voice called from the now open front door.
Astrid rolled her eyes. "Ever heard of knocking Ruff?" Ruffnut put on a confused face "kn-ock-ing? Never heard of it!" The female twin bounced into the living room and plopped onto a chair. "So how do you feel?" She asked as Astrid sat across from her, she groaned and shook her head. "Like shit." Astrid answered rubbing her swelling skin.
Ruff laughed. "I know, but hey you're pregnant. Oh course you feel like shit, but when you see your baby for the first time it'll all be worth it."
Astrid sighed. "I hope so Ruffnut..."
"Trust me everything will work out, I'm sure of it. Are you hungry? That's a stupid question what would you like?"
Astrid smiled. "I really want pickles covered in salt and orange."
Ruff grimaced. "I'm not gonna lie to you. That's gross. Even for me."
(Present)
Astrid chuckled lightly at the memories, she now approached month nine of pregnancy and she was now more than ready to have this child. Her second child. Despite the second time of abnormal cravings, hair trigger temper, and hormones, she was happy. Happy that she'd have Hiccup's second child.
As she entered the Haddock home, everyone was there— Valka was humming while cooking, Mala writing Terror mail messages to Berks allies, Hiccup reading to Eira while the little girl sat on her fathers lap, Valka looked up and smiled warmly at her daughter in law. "Hello Astrid." She came over to Valka and gave her a hug. "Hey Val, what're you cooking there?" The older Haddock smiled and replied. "I'm making smoked fillet with mutton." Astrid licked her lips, that sounded great.
Before Astrid could do anything else, the sound of liquid hitting the floor was heard. Everyone looked Astrid and the shield maiden looked down her leg to see liquid looking beneath her feet, Astrid looked at Valka and the older woman knew what was happening. "The child." Astrid whispered, she then groaned in pain and fell, thankfully Valka caught her, Hiccup and Mala rushed to Astrid's side.
"The baby is coming!" Mala said, Hiccup was lost for words, Mala turned to Valka and asked. "We need to lay her down." Valka nodded and the three of them placed Astrid on the couch. Mala rushed to get cold water and cloths, Hiccup held Astrids hand tightly. "Hey. I've got you Astrid, try and relax." Astrid groaned in pain but nodded, Valka stripped Astrid down until she was just wearing her light tunic and skirt, she needed to be cool, if she overheated in her armor, she'd most likely pass out.
As minutes passed by, Astrid was drenched in sweat, and the pain of labor increasing, she then felt a sharp pain; telling her this is it. Mala dabbed the wet cloth on Astrid's forehead to cool her off, and her grip on Hiccup's hand tightened. "H-Hiccup. It h-hurts." Tears streamed down her face, it hurt Hiccup seeing his wife in such pain once again, but she needed to pull through. "I know Astrid, you need to push with everything you've got. You've done it before and I need you to do it again." Astrid screamed as she pushed, Valka gasped as she saw a head of a baby.
"Astrid, you need to keep pushing, you're almost there!" Again she screamed in pain, and soon wailing of a baby could be heard, Valka grabbed a knife and cut the umbilical cord and rinsed the blood and juices off of the baby.
Hiccup gave Astrid a canteen of water, she drank it all in seconds, she took slow and easy breaths, trying to relax. Valka smiles at Hiccup and Astrid and showed them their child. "Congratulations you two! You have a healthy boy!" Hiccup chuckled in disbelief and Valka placed the baby in her sons arms.
Hiccup looked at Astrid and showed her their son, Astrid took the baby carefully out of his arms and began crying with joy, she looked at Hiccup and asked. "What should we name him?" After thirty seconds, Hiccup smiled widely and looked at Astrid. "Stoick. His name is Stoick Haddock II." Valka smiled widely while wiping away tears, Stoick would be so proud of Hiccup. Mala nodded and came up to Hiccup. "I'll give the news to the village." She placed a hand on Hiccup's shoulder before exiting the house.
Astrid gently caressed her sons face and smiled as Stoick II was now fast asleep. "Hello Stoick. Welcome to the world. I promise you'll be surrounded by love, safety, and equality." Hiccup sat down next to Astrid and kissed her temple, and gently kissed his new sons head.
"You will live in a world full of dragons son, you will one day rule Greater Berk as its Chief and lead your people to greatness and ensure the safety of dragon kind. But until then, know that I won't let anything that is vile or evil touch you. I will protect you with my life my son. Always."
Valka smiled and left the two to spend time with their son.
