Chapter 16: Defeated/ A great man has fallen

(Normal pov)

As Drago's army hulled in Valka's Bewilderbeast back to their command ship, Drago himself had Krogan land, he ordered his second in command to ensure that Valka's Bewilderbeast is safely away.

Drago advanced on Hiccup and Toothless who were still recovering from their fall, the warlord roared and waved his bull-hook to get the attention of his Bewilderbeast. Once the warlords alpha was behind him, Drago saw the defeat in the Dragon Masters face, and he smiled; knowing he beat him easily.

"No dragon can resist the alphas command..." Drago pointed his bull-hook to his Bewilderbeast, the dragons face was cold and cruel; much like its master. "...so he who controls the alpha, controls them all." The warlord pointed his bull-hook right at Toothless and the muddy Bewilderbeast gazed at the Night Fury.

Toothless began thrashing violently; trying to block the muddy Bewilderbeast call to join him and Drago, Hiccup was about to draw out Inferno, but stopped when he felt a blade at his neck, he turned to see Krogan give him a hard glare with his lip curled up. Hiccup could do nothing but watch as his friends mind was being taken by Drago's Bewilderbeast.

"Toothless. C'mon bud! Fight!" Hiccup encouraged, he could tell his scaly companion was fighting, but it was a losing battle, Drago then spoke. "Witness, true strength! Strength of will over others..." Toothless stopped thrashing and rose, his pupils turned into thin slits and waited for his new alphas command.

(Stoick's pov)

We arrived at Valka's mountain and saw the aftermath of a huge battle, I pulled out a telescope and breathed a sigh of relief to see Valka and the others safe.

But something was wrong.

They were heading toward something with panic and urgency. My lungs seemed to have emptied themselves of all the air as I saw what they were rushing towards.

Drago and his... massive dragon, I saw the man had his bull-hook pointed toward my son and I ordered Skullcrusher to take me down there as fast as he could, he obeyed and flapped his wings with all the power he could summon.

Once we were close enough, I jumped off my dragon and barrel rolled and sprinted toward my son. I threw my axe at rope that entangled a piece of wood; making me a makeshift bridge, I jumped off and continued sprinting toward my son. I couldn't lose him.

I would not fail my son again after so many years of doing so. I'd do what any father is required.

Protect my son from harm.

Drago smirked as he saw the Dragon Masters Night Fury turn to his Bewilderbeast command, now? It was time to end his rival once and for all. "...and in the face of such strength. You are nothing. Boy." The warlord said cooly as he pointed his bull-hook at Hiccup and the muddy Bewilderbeast looked at Hiccup and snarled something at Toothless, who then turned his attention to his friend.

Hiccup stepped back slightly and held his hands out and asked shakily. "Uh bud? What did he just tell you to do?" Toothless advanced with teeth bared and wings spread out wide to intimidate. And it worked.

This can't be happening.

"Toothless! C'mon! Snap out of it!!" Hiccup said, the muddy Bewilderbeast snarled; continuing to whisper terrible orders forcibly into the Night Furies mind. Toothless crouched lower and charged up a superheated plasma blast. "Toothless! Please stop!!" Hiccup begged, tears streaming down his face and his hands held out, he watched as Drago walked away with a sinister smirk along with Krogan and they left their foe to die by his own dragon.

"HICCUP!!!"

Said man turned to see his father sprinting toward him, Hiccup held out his hand. "Dad!! No!!" But before Hiccup could register anything, a powerful blast erupted and sent the young man flying and landing roughly into the snow.

Drago and Krogan turned to see the muscular form of Stoick buried in ice and not moving, both men chuckled darkly and continued walking away.

Everyone who accompanied Hiccup rushed to him and everyone who came from Berk and the Isle of Night.

Hiccup looked up and gasped as he saw his father. Covered in ice and snow, he rushed to his side removed the ice blocks off of him and wailed out. "DAD!!" Valka gasped and rushed to her husband and helped her son get Stoick on his back, once that was done, Valka checked for a heartbeat. There was no sound in his chest. Hiccup looked at his mother, frantic for an answer, Valka looked at her son with trembling lips and she squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head. Hiccup too shook his head and whispered.

"No."

The muddy Bewilderbeast roared and turned away, that broke its control over Toothless; the Night Fury shook his head, slits returning to big orbs and body relaxing as he looked around him and noticed his rider and his mother sobbing over the corpse of Stoick the Vast. "No, no, no." He heard his rider moan out, he turned around to see everyone else arrive and gasp in shock, horror and disbelief before rushing over to Hiccup and Valka.

Toothless cocked his head in confusion. What happened? Why was Stoick on ground not moving? Did he...? No. He couldn't have. Could he?

Toothless brushed his nose against Stoick's hand and sought out his palm but Hiccup lashed out in anger. "No!! Get away from him!!" Toothless backed away in hurt and confusion.

::Hiccup? I-I don't understand...::

Hiccup looked into Toothless's eyes roared out. "YOU KILLED MY FATHER!!!" Toothless winced at his tone but felt like a knife pierced his heart. He killed his riders father. In cold blood. He couldn't have. Toothless warbled in apology but Hiccup bared his teeth and veins popping out of his neck as he barked out. "Get out of my sight!! Get away!!!" Toothless couldn't bare any more of his friends anger so he ran away; heart seizing in his chest and guilt slowly beginning to eat at him.

Valka places her hand on Hiccup and said. "It's not his fault son, you know that. Good dragons, under the control of bad people do bad things." The muddy Bewilderbeast let out a mighty roar and every dragon on this island, including every Night Fury flew toward their new alpha, Fishlegs, Asbjorn, Heather, the twins, Calus, Artemis, Mala and Astrid watched their dragons fly into the embrace of a cruel, viscous and ruthless alpha. They could do nothing but see their dragons being taken from them.

Drago grinned widely, after all these years, he gained the second Bewilderbeast and will force it to submit to him and use it as his own; and he will control every dragon on earth and finally rule the world. Krogan bowed before his Dragon-God and climbed on his Singetail and head back to the command ship. The warlord spotted Toothless and smirked, he walked toward the Night Fury, but the sad dragon payed no mind to the madman and submitted to him immediately, Drago climbed on Toothless and ordered him to take the air.

Astrid and Mala whispered encouraging words into Hiccup's ear as the others had placed their hands on him and new Chief, but all words stopped when they heard a Night Fury wail in pain.

"Come on!"

They heard Drago's voice echo, the madman himself rode Toothless and cried out.

"My brothers and sisters, we've struck a crippling blow to the Dragon Master and his allies!!!" The enemy soldiers roared in agreement and waited for their leader to speak again. "With all the alphas in our command, we will control every dragon on earth to either submit or suffer! And then we will conquer this world!!"

Another wave of cheers rang out and Drago pointed his bull-hook toward the horizon.

"We go! Return to our fortress and gather our strength. And then we will finish off the Dragon Master and his allies!!!"

A final wave of cheers rang and Drago and his army left their enemies to drown in defeat and sorrow.

(Hours later)

Life can be cruel in that sometimes the lives of those we love would be cut short and innocence would be lost when it should not. Hiccup, with bow and arrow in hand, glanced sorrowfully at the lonely boat in the distance. On it was the resting body of Stoick the Vast, covered by a thin, white sheet. His helmet was placed above his head as a symbol of his leadership, his talents, and of who he was. Hiccup did not want to set his father ablaze, but he had to give Stoick a proper, traditional Viking burial no matter how grey the sky or how bland the commodities. It was only right.

"May the Valkyries welcome you, and lead you through Odins great battlefield. May they sing your name with love and fury, so that we may hear it from the depths of Valhalla. And know that you've taken your rightful place at the table of kings, for a great man has fallen. A warrior. A Chieftain. A father. A husband. And a good friend." Gobber declared with tears pouring down his face. Hiccup touched the tip of the arrow to a scorched wood whose core was still burning hot. "A man cherished by his people has perished, but he shall not wither from our hearts..." Gobber continued speaking just as Hiccup pulled the arrow back, his hands unusually steady, and aimed the would-be-projectile at the drifting boat. Gobber's words started to seem more and more like gibberish, but Hiccup didn't mind not comprehending, or even hearing, any of it: with each word uttered that described Stoick, his heart sank further.

He watched, out of respect and admiration, when the Vikings, his wives, friends, son and future daughter in law were present around him each sent their arrows flying at and hitting the ship after he had done so. A fiery dance engulfed the wooden boat, glorious, beautiful, mesmerizing. Hiccup scoffed. What was so enthralling about Stoick burning into colorless ash?

Hiccup shook his head as tears streamed down his face. "Goodbye father." He whispered out as the flames consumed Stoick's ship. The young man felt arms wrap around his torso, he turned to see Astrid who had a pained look on her face and tears clouding her vision. "I'm so sorry Hiccup, w-we could've stopped this. W-we coul—" Hiccup shushed her and shook his head. "No. This was not your fault or anyone of one you." He said looking at everyone present on the island, he sighed heavily and shook his head in anger. "Drago will pay. With blood." Hiccup removed himself from Astrid's loving embrace and stopped right at the beach and fell on his knees.

Everyone gathered around Hiccup and looked at each other; unsure what to say to the man. "Hiccup. Talk to us. Don't bottle up that pain." Heather crouched down and placed a hand on her friends shoulder, Hiccup looked at her and then at everyone else and choked out. "I-I don't know if I'm strong enough to lead the Strike Clan and now... Berk. I can't do this alone." Valka approached and hugged her son with all her might; he returned the hug and sniffled. "You're not alone son, you have all of us. We will free our Bewilderbeast from Drago's hands and we will avenge all the fallen. But for now you need to rest and rally your troops." Valka gestured to everyone gathered and Hiccup nodded, wiped away his tears, and looked at his followers and spoke.

"The only dragons that weren't under Drago's Bewilderbeast command are the babies. So we ride them back to the Isle of Night and send messages to all our allies. We need to formulate our next move before Drago and his army finish us off. We will have justice and we will defeat Drago Bludvist and end his cruelty forever."
